There's a comic called "Genocide man" about a world where open source extended to biology as well, which brought many changes, including deadly man made plagues. It is a rare known gem that I highly recommend.
I don't know how it is with Americans, but as a rabid Facebook user with similar friends, we're quite aware that it we have a bad habit (although for some of us there are also positive things about Facebook use).
The only point that I understand is that you think that letting people do mental tasks that can be done by computers somehow makes them more intelligent, while I think that it's important to keep busy with mental tasks, but that one should prefer tasks that CANNOT be done by computers.
Isn't this just a private case of attention span deficit disorder? To me it looks like one is incapable to control what one gives attention to, and I see no difference between a "gaming addict" and a "facebook addict".
I come from a country (Israel) where there's conscription and an actual war. For every girl who likes guys in uniform, there's also a girl who fucks discreetly with a slacker who didn't. Sometimes they may even be the same one.
C++ also provides easy reference counting and insurance of pointer uniqueness. I agree that one can do the same with very well ordered C, but C++ automates the process for you, and that's one of the things that programming languages are about, automating simple thought processes for the programmer.
How come in the last few years, whenever somebody says the words "personal responsibility", he always uses it to justify horrible things happening to people?
Too bad that like many traumatized people, your response to trauma is to automatically admire the other side no matter what.
When I wrote patriotism in there, I referred just as much to USSR as I did to the USA. Also, I am not living in the USA, but rather in a country that has a public health system and yet is not Venezuela or USSR or Luna. Would you believe that such a thing is possible?
Blockchain, can anybody think of a revision system ? GIT, SVN ?
Blockchain is very different from GIT and SVN, both of these trust all users, which can't be done with financial transactions.

Looks like the old people are not very interested either, what I just wrote is really the basic idea of blockchain, to be able to handle hostiles as well as friendlies (assuming that there's not too many hostiles).
I live in a country (Israel) where people were fired because their workplaces monitored their facebook walls and found out they spoke against the army. I was also told, when I wanted to apply for a job, that I will have to make sure my facebook account is clean, and that lying that I don't have facebook would seem suspicious. I have heard that in the US, there are workplaces that wlll not hire you if you don't have an active facebook.
Does this answer your question? (And yes, I do agree that there are ways around this).
I don't think americans have some magical talent for engineering that other nations don't, despite what propoganda says. I also don't believe that capitalism magically creates amazing things that no other discipline can't. Hell, the internet itself was made with government funding.
I actually want this to happen. Forks are good at times and allow for improvements. Maybe the european internet can create something better than the american one.

In capitalism, the property of rich citizens is more important than the life of the poor.

I think that the disease here is that people lack agency.

I'm much more worried about the fact that people don't know how to construct sentences, there are enough languages that do fine without cursive.

Goddamn writing, ever since people started doing it, they lost their memory.

Eric Raymond is not well reknowned for his programming/engineering achievements, but for being a public speaker. What is the value of his advice?

S/Godfather/capitalism/

Intended by whom?
I'm old btw, I just hear lectures and read wikipedia articles before I automatically assume things.
But most jobs are done in front of a screen.
I'm curious, and how do you spend your free time?

Circular logic
