  1. ATI Compatiblity Issues on UT2003 Gone Gold, Ships with Linux Support · · Score: 1

Im not too enriched by the compatibility issues with the Radeon 9700 & Xfree 4.xx but I have troubles getting over 24bit colour @ 1280x1024 on my All in Wonder Radeon. Im using the Gatos drivers of course and TV, Capture, MPEG-2 Acceleration works fine! Though, since ATI just recently announced the next ALL in Wonder Radeon 9700 to be released in the near future, I am really considering purchasing the product!

Hopefully I can get 32bit colour this time and no issues with XAWTV :)

  4. Absolutely Not on Is Red Hat the Microsoft of Linux? · · Score: 1

Red Hat still continues to deliver freely distributed distro's without any hassles at all (unlike some *cough* SuSe *cough*).

What I think is that over the next few years we will be seeing RedHat improving RPM and adapting Gentoo's way of thinking.

We need to improve upon the interface. This has been overlooked many times due to many "console" users out there.

KDE = Feels Like MacOS combined with Play School Software... I suppose we can customize it to an extent but still...
    Gnome = Too Windows 95...

  5. Driver based encryption on Microsoft and Wireless Authentication · · Score: 1

I know this may be a little off-topic but its kind of related.

So far for my honours project, I am proposing a driver based encryption for 802.11 cards that take advantage of the new WEP+ Sure you may say WEP is totally insecure, but heck I see it as a first line of defense. So far WEP+ takes approximately about 2 weeks to get the keys using air-snort and thats just a rumoured comment from a mailing list! No one has officially claimed to break WEP+!!!

The development project will be entirely under Linux and for Prism 2/2.5 cards. As for Microsoft's "DRAFT" standard proposal. My thoughts are with the majority, that is, it will scare off most medium to large inter-enterprise businesses.

It is a known fact that Bill Gates sold off most of his shares. Maybe it finally has begun (the dethrowning).

I bet we will see a troll in the next few months reporting "Windows is DYING" LOL

  6. Cost Cutting on Telstra Considers 45,000-Seat Linux Deployment · · Score: 1

As an Australian, I know the true reason why Telstra is considering Linux Deployment. The simple answer is cost reduction.

Telstra will not embrace Linux but use it to reduce the costs in software licensing.

You think M$ was bad, research more in Telstra. Some links here:

To top it off, I have 1 Phone Line in this home and I mostly use it for the net. There is quite a few people trying to get through on the line constantly BUT I ALWAYS TURN OFF CALL WAITING. Guess what I find it turns back on automatically from time to time. Hence people ringing will make my modem drop and redial constantly.

In addition, Telstra has a control over ISPs, forcing ISPs across Australia to drop users every 4-6 hours.

I have more confidence with my data on an optical disc rather than a magnetic oriented platter.

You wouldnt believe how many times my data was lost or got corrupted on an LS-120 Disk, 1.44 Floppy Disk and everyone knows the mishaps of hard drive failure.

Yes magnetic storage is more convenient and efficient but theres a trade off with data integrity.

I guess it comes down to personal preference.

  9. Why not use the LS-120? on Death to the 3.5" Floppy? · · Score: 1

I have an Imation LS-120 in my box. Why not make these drives standard in most system packages. They are backward compatible to floppies and can actually read/write 1.44mb disks 20-40% faster than he standard floppy drive.

Using the standard LS disk, you can store 120mb. I think this is more than enough for most productive people.

    Just a thought.
