I'll second what many others have said but with an analogy.
Now imagine if your OS were a car.
Your Mac and Ubuntu cars would have a lock on the door so you can enter it if you have permission. To start the car you would need the key because everyone shouldn't have permission to start the car.
Your Windows car though would have no locks at all, and to start it you simply press the pedal and it starts to go. Of course it wouldn't be impossible to own such a car but to park it securely you would need safety features such as a parking spot with a box to lock it up. That's why Windows needs to add a firewall and anti-virus over the existing system.
On linux and mac only the needed ports are opened and the ones which are opened are secure. The browser and IM don't have access to your system files so if they ever are compromised (possible) they won't affect your entire system (at least less likely).
but it's not as simple as he states it to be. There are innovative projects out there but they never go far. Look at enlightenment.org they have an awesome project and were doing the stuff apple does today way before anyone else yet they will never finish the damn thing (or so it seems, prove me wrong by all means).
The problem with OSS isn't lack of quality it's the goals. If someone codes a free and open project he might do it just to prove to himself that he's *technically* capable. However a technically capable project doesn't allways bode well with users.
The problem is polish at the end. Directing the project towards users. This is where OSS has had a problem for a while.
If you look at gnome though they are starting to look really good as far as ease of use is concerned and feature set is growing and growing. However they aren't much in terms of innovation. This is where we see a great imbalance.
Why not dual boot and only ever use your windows partition for gaming. Keep everything important on a linux partition. I know it's not Mac and all but that's what I did for the longest time. Now I have a mac though and honestly aside from having a linux server to play with this is my main desktop. Hassle free just like Ubuntu and amazingly easy to use!

I'm using an MX900 because I have a bluetooth antena in my laptop and it works like a charm together. However I find the batter time on it sucks so I have to have spare batteries if I play to use it for a long time without coming home to its docking station.
because it brings up some interesting ideas to think about I still think that he's a demagogue. He never writes an essay without saying something nice about someone. Why can't he be grumpy once in a while?
The way hybrid cars save gas is by gaining back the energy lost in downhills and breaking. Not by allowing you to charge your car in an outlet. That energy was always lost before now a percentage of it is stored for later use!
Gates: "I tried it and I really liked the tabbed browsing so I innovated it into IE. Also that popup blocking thing was pretty cool so we brought that innovation in IE as well. See Microsoft innovates! At least IE has a ton of free cool toolbars you can plug onto it. Some even learn enough about you to send you promotions you really want! Betcha can't have all that on Firefox!"
I think there are ways to reward people who play more with perks that don't advantage them over people who play less. Take these ideas for example:
even faster mount (10%)
faster casts for mount and heartstones
faster cooldown on Heartstone
a second heartstone
unlimited free gryphon rides
portals instead of boats
These are just ideas and I'm sure smarter people than myself can think of better ideas. They are already advantaged by more drops because they get more chances at them but do they have to have uber gear on top of the already excellent stuff they get?
Part of the reason why WoW was so great is because of the XP bar system. It's made so that even players who play very little still can catch up relatively easily to their friends to quest together. If 4 of my friends have awesome gear and I lag behind in terms of buffing items they'll find it sucks to group with me and I don't want that.
It would be cool if this helper would popup whenever you are doing something and show you ways to do things better. Oh and it could look like some smart guy too which would make it really cool!
seems as though Victorinox is the first but that Wenger later became the people who produced the knives used by the army. Victorinox is the "original" right?
as weird as this may sound I worked for such a company already.
The guy wanted us to write the logic in VB and he would then translate them in whatever language the real source code was in (I think it was C). I worked there 22 days before my direct boss (the crazy guy asking me to code in VB) fired me for being stuborn. I then worked for his boss which later fired him.
I really pissed off the guy by saying that he should plaster his name in the log files like that all the time and that he should try to rotate the logs or something cause it was causing problems filling up the 6 gig hard drives ou clients used.

hehehe did you read that fun with endorphine receptors? Just because I can see that when it comes down to it it's a pointless world I can still try to get the most out of it. I have more fun than most people I know (epicurean I am).
Anyways I agree with Dawkins on what he said. I just think you can come to this conclusion once you see life for what it is like he and I have.
for my part (mainly reading a lot of Richard Dawkins lately) I have come to the conclusion that we don't have a purpose other than to survive long enough to procreate. The fact that we evolved consciousness and ask that same question again and again about a purpose is just an artifact like tonsils and appendix.
Whoaaa!!! yeah... I know it seems pointless when it all comes down to it. But hey may as well have fun with all our fun with our endorphine receptors inside our brains!:)
I think they use the word "selectively". I'm not sure what it means but I believe it means that they can select the cancerous cells only. Anyways I hope it does.

Cause Ubuntu costs just way too much and I much prefer copying than having to pay... oh wait!
you mean the word is "voila" :-P
Seriously that's like toaster and coffee maker 2000. Nice concept and all but not needed.

that's funny cause my neighboor and my parents who never heard of slashdot use OpenOffice now too. They don't see the difference.
I have to tell you guys to go fuck yourselves (well at least the arrogant self-serving bastards you elected, not you the people).

Cause honestly that's what I was waiting for from you guys. I already can read PDF file under linux. Could you please port Photoshop?
