  1. Typo AMD not ARM on Is Intel Planning To Kill Enthusiast PCs? · · Score: 1

    Enthusiast ARM computer? Ha ha.

More seriously though how many folks who are "enthusiasts" upgrade CPU or mobo? I'm thinking they probably dump the pair together for an upgrade if they have that kind of money. So in my mind making the cpu a permanent part of the mobo makes sense and can lower cost as well. Sounds like a win to me.

An earlier post made a good point too. Gold has gotten really frick'n expensive. A SMT solder mount does away with that.

Of course the Pointy Hair Bosses will read that and conclude that they can release their support staff from employment.

Virtualization if properly executed may improve workstation security, and consistency, but more likely the managers will try to cheap-out on it and execute spectacular FAIL because performance will be horrible. Then they end up putting workstations back on everyone's desk and hire support staff.

  12. Re:Amps on Return of the Vacuum Tube · · Score: 1

I think folks get into trouble when trying to compare transistors and tubes from a sound perspective. Electrically tubes are fine and dandy. Each has some advantage, but good circuit design usually overcomes most of the the problems.

With regards to audio amplification folks neglect the importance of the output transformers used in an amplifier. Yes, and some transistorized amplifiers use them too. My point is that the output transformers generally contribute more to the final product that any other part of the amplifier.

Just to make a point, I have a "class D" amplifier that uses output transformers, and replacing the cheap originals with top quality items, things got better in a big way. Tubes are great in preamps, and headphone amps.

We're lucky that the US is still willing to try to keep things in balance.

To quote Publius Cornelius Tacitus “The more corrupt the state, the more laws.” Nuff said.

Regarding offshoring, I don't really have a problem with it as long as it's intent is to supplement a businesses workforce. I do have a problem with replacing workforce with foreign nationals. At some point if everything is outsourced, we'll see our middle class collapse, and thus businesses won't have customer base anymore.

If the car is electric only and relies on the grid to charge, I'd end up walking home. FAIL.

Now if we were talking about some sort of super capacitor that can drain and then be quickly replenished this may have a useful effect to normalize daytime power usage, but only for short durations. An extended drain would be unacceptable. I don't think the monetary reimbursement would entice folks at all because vehicular range is king.
