This website is really owned by Microsoft. It started as a way for Bill Gates to plot a course thru towns he visits without getting beated down by mobs of people dressed as chubby penguins. Who leaked this?
I work for a rather nice sized ISP in Michigan, and no it's not AOL. Every_single_server we have runs linux. We have one, count 'em one, NT server in the entire place that belongs to us and that is here only to give the owners son a job as an NT Admin, sad huh?
For the last 3 or maybe longer years we have run Debian exclusively. Is Linux ready for the enterprise? Yes. Is Linux ready for every enterprise? No. But those of us who can, do.
People who are interested in video games look for video gaming news on "video game based boards". Just because a new update to a video game is released doesn't really warrant it as "breaking news" or "stuff that matters". But still, it gets posted here. And I read it here first. I'm a moderately advid gamer, and I get all my news from slashdot, what does that say?
Go ahead and mod me down, I'm still asleep and am opt to ramble anyhting at this point.
or banned by our ew Office of Homeland Security as a "possible tool for use by terrorists"
Uhm, so when are they going to ban airplanes because they are possible tools for terrorism? Or any public/private form of transpertation. I get your point, but there could have been better ways of stating it.
Well, there are a few actually. Hit sourceforge up and you'll find things like Open AntiVirus which seems to be promising. Maybe it'll get more attention with all the hype about Green Lantern. It would be nice to see an OpenSource antivirus solution hit the big time.
As if we should fully trust the FBI is capable of keeping something like this from being compromised. It doesn't take but a matter of secods to see that they are not cabale of keeping information secret. 30 seconds at google gave me these little tidbits from CNN The Las Vegas sun
and Crimelibrary Online
Since this thing was first announced I'm willing to bet there have been swarms of unethical people waiting in the wings to snatch it up. Bah! I'm just a little bothered at the whole thing. In the past I've been a victim of the wrong person getting their hands on information that was supposed to be protected. Incompitence, that's all I have to say.
And no, I don't double check my grammar/spelling.
It'$ $o nice to $see the objective view$ of the $la$hdot reader$.
I've never had to u$e Micro$oft $oftware, lucky me I $uppo$e. But I $till don't see the point in all the ba$hing I $ee from day to day.
It make$ me laugh every time I $see people po$t "Micro$oft".
Where I work it is so laid back that we hang out at work. Out of a 6 hour work day (4 for some of us) we are working a total of 1.5 hours, the rest of the time we are playing quake or planning a keggar in the upstairs office.
In Europe nothing. I live in eastern Us and got a steady 240K on this one. Was still living with a 2.4.5 kernel and decided to upgrade. Thanks for the link since kernel.org is down, so no access to a mirrors list.
I'd say there is 18 million installations where I work alone! I do workstation support (most of the time) at a "nameless" printer manufaturer in a city called LEXington. I also work with a guy named MARK. Well, with that out of the way;)
I see this anoying thing every day, and every time I have to do something on these poor peoples computers it's there to annoy the hell out of me. Like a frigging purple monkey I see as well, or maybe an anoying paperclip, or a boot screen with a Windows(tm) logo, or a..........</rant>
I am willing to bet that this machine has more use than the 3 windows machines I own. At least a box-o-cement is worth talking about;)
But besides that, what I have done in my house to prevent some pre-puberty bastard from taking my pride and jow was this;
Picked up a few 486 and 386 computers from a swap meet, I believe I traded a couple 3Com NICs for them.
Placed my main machines inside a closet and ran extentions for the video, mouse, and keyboard to an omnicube to switch between them.
Set the ever so beautiful 3(4)86 boxes in the computer shelves of mine and my wifes desks with an extra one of the floor beside my desk and ran dummy cables to the outlets in the back.
And of course, locked the closet with the main systems in it.
I know this isn't real security, only obscurity, but it does serve it's purpose. I picked the idea up from a friend of mine in Sterling Hts. Michigan who had someone break into his house. They took his 386 and monitor but left his real machine which was locked in a hollowed out filing cabinet sitting next to his desk. Which insurance payed for a new monitor and computer. (wonder if that was legal). But never the less it worked. I on the other hand have two extra large based cooling fans in the closet on thermostats to keep the temp in the closet down. I am running 1 server and 2 workstations, plus a firewall, all hidden in that locked closet.
As of today no one has broken in, and I hope they never do. But while I am at work I have a little peace of mind in knowing I have done what I could to protect what is probably on of the 5 largest investments in my life.
Perhaps the Russians are trying to protect us from The Terrible Secret of Space.
Seriously though, is there any word on the cost of this device, according to space.com this thing was privately funded. Wish I had that bankroll.

does your friend still work on it? From the CVS it looks like it hasn't been touched in a few months.
ALL CAPS? I didn't think AOL was around in the 70's.

But did any of you listen? Now please, go stand by the stairs, the space robots are coming to protect us.
