  1. Re:Necessity? on First Ever Nanotube Transistors On A Circuit · · Score: 1

I remember reading something at some point a long long time ago (therefore cant remember where) about a scheme to store bits according to the position of an atom (err, molecule?) inside of the naner-tube. a charge at one end of the tube would force the ball to the opposite end and vice-versa. the bit would be 1 or 0 depending on which end of the tube it was in. sounds pretty far fetched to me but that doesn't mean i didn't read it somewhere. none the less, with that sort of scheme your tube would hold memory with the absence of power, assuming you didn't shake it, ala etch-a-schetch!

I would think that something this large(?) would require quite a few square feet (aww damnit, i meant meters!) of panels, not something you could just mount to the top of a mobile, thrashing around vehicle.
on the other hand i dont see why they couldn't have some setup where the panels unroll on the ground (think of an overhead garage door). when the batteries start getting low the thing could find a nice flat place to lay the panels, start rolling forward while unrolling the panels out of the back onto the ground. and like you say, when rolling the pannels back into the rover dust them off with the compressed air. THe biggest problem is bringing all that compressed air from earth seeing as how mars doesn't have any ;)

First thing that comes to mind is a potentiometer where a voltage is applied to the ends and the wiper is adjusted to get a voltage (i guess you could also use a multitap transformer analogy).
If this is the case it sounds like concerns about selectable input (120 / 240 vac) can be resolved by tapping into the crystal at different points for different voltage inputs, not to mention varying different taps for differnt voltage outputs.
The thing that baffles me is how it works in the ultrasonic range. is the 60hz line frequency being multiplied first or is it just the size/thickness of the crystal, standing waves and all that?

Eh so i screwed up. price probably won't come down. The manufacturers will probably leave the price as ac-dc converters or jack it up due to the "convenience" of having a smaller lighter power supply. all hail capitalizm.

dc-dc ac-dc switching power supplies may not use transformers (besides isolation as mentioned below), but they're chocked full of electronic components. Reduction of components count reduces failure points, manufacturing cost and price.

interesting you should put those two on the same line, but this is really the only problem in the whole mix. I'm guessing that people wouldn't mind being open so long as the fuck stains we call leaders were open (read ACCOUNTABLE) as well. If there's something you need to hide its generally due to some stupid law or idea that the creator wasn't held accountable for creating because they were hidden.

Amazingly, even economists are now coming to grips with the fact that they've overestimated consumer rationalism. The models that they built on such assumptions don't seem to reflect reality... and the hot new trend in economics research is consumer irrationalism.

irrationalism? The monetary system is irrationalism. Stepping back and looking at the bigger picture I'd say that what the public is doing here is rational. Why should the public want to adhere to a system that is inherently unblanced? Yes you're right, the attention span of most is quite short, but don't look at the micro, look at the macro. After all, isn't sanity based on the average behavior? How many millions of people are downloading "illegal" music? You could make the argument that the majority of people (well, ok, americans) are insane concidering their will to let bush continue unimpeded and i'd agree with that, but in the current RIAA case i'd say that the public is just reacting to an inherently fucked up monetary system - you know, the core item that's supposed to instill civil behavior by promoting fair trade. I'd say that this little sorry-assed "revolution" has been brewing for a while and that "the people" have been waiting for an opportunity to have their voices heard through a medium (p2p) that doesn't require alot of energy (i.e. writing congress) and is basicly safe (i.e. not rioting in the streets).
