  1. Missing the article's point on Linux Needs More Haters · · Score: 5, Insightful

I read the article and I thought, "Well, that sounds like a good idea." Too often when anyone mentions ANY of GNU/Linux's shortcomings (which, to be fair, are far less in number than Windows's), they are labelled a troll and are either attacked or ignored.

So what happens? The comments for this story include gems like "Not that much to complain about" and "Linux + GPL what is there not to love."

Legitimately easy-to-use GNU/Linux distributions such as Ubuntu didn't happen because of the GNU/Linux Yes-Men out there. It happened because the people at Canonical listened to complaints from people like GNU/Linux haters and tried to address the issues.

Or for that matter, flip the situation around. It seems that many users on Slashdot love GNU/Linux and hate Windows. If someone wrote an article saying that Microsoft should listen to the issues of Windows haters to help improve their product, wouldn't you think it was a good idea?

  2. Common sense on Best Way To Store Digital Video For 20 Years? · · Score: 1

Counting on a single storage device for 20 years isn't a smart move. Anyone here still able to read 5 1/4 inch floppies on their main computer? What about 3 1/2? Even those are limited to cheap external drives. Pick a storage solution for the short to medium term, and make plans to switch to the next generation when the current one reaches the end of its life. In other words, DVD now, Blu-Ray down the road, and any future successor later.

And if you want an extra layer of redundancy, buy a decent external hard drive, copy the videos and photos to it, and place it in a safety deposit box. Pick a standard that should be usable with the next generation of technology (USB 2.0 if USB 3 continues the trend of backwards compatibility). So if we all switch to using 3" super high density optical discs before you can transfer your files off of DVD, you'll still be covered.

  4. Numbering of Windows 7? on Windows 7 Multitouch Demonstration · · Score: 1

I'm lost here. How is the next version Windows 7?

I was of the understanding that after the professional and consumer versions of Windows merged (with the release of XP), that the NT version count was left intact. So the numbering should be:

    NT 4 -- Windows 4
    2000 -- Windows 5
    XP -- Windows 6
    Vista -- Windows 7
    ??? -- Windows 8

Or if that's not the case, just look at the consumer versions of Windows. I'm even including Windows ME with 98/98SE and the numbers still don't add up.

    3/3.1 -- Windows 3
    95 -- Windows 4
    98/ME -- Windows 5
    XP -- Windows 6
    Vista -- Windows 7
    ??? -- Windows 8

So can someone please tell me how the next version of Windows is Windows 7?

Since most I know who list an absolute F/OSS requirement do so solely because they wanted to use other people's work without paying for it, I suspect the original poster wasn't all that interested in altruism anyway. I agree with you, but with a slightly different rationale. The original poster stated that the program must work with Windows Vista. I don't know anyone who is really gung-ho about F/OSS that doesn't use a distribution of GNU/Linux...

"As if the Zune wasn't already [...] unpopular enough"

You mean like Firefox a few years back, when it started from nothing and stole a few small percentage points from the reigning juggernaut?

"just another nail in the coffin if [sic] the Zune"

I doubt it. Microsoft's recent announcement concerning the lack of future for (the Zune incompatible) PlaysForSure DRM implies that they're going to focus even more of their attention on the Zune. And the second generation of Zunes seem to have been better received than the first.

Complaining aside though, I've had an iPod Nano for a year now and I love it. Even though the Zune doesn't really concern me, I'm not happy with what Microsoft is doing. The only rationale I can come up with is that including the copyright cop may make more media providers sign exclusive deals with Microsoft rather than signing with Apple (and that of course is a complete guess).

    Handcoding wins.

I'm a student in a library technician diploma program, and we've had to make websites for various courses. I handcode every one of them, including template pages for the other members in my groups so we can have some consistancy across the site. Then they generally edit my template pages in some WYSIWYG editor and send it back to me to put it together with the other pages. Inevitably there are some screwups somewhere, but they're easy to fix in my hand-coded pages. The ones changed in an editor however... A basic webpage with text, a few images (without specialized locations), and basic tables should not require thousands of lines of HTML.

It's like taking someone's dissertation, translating it through Babelfish from English into Japanese, then translating it back.

You make a good point, but I did visit EB Games's website and...

    1) EB Games offers no details, other than a release date, and the fact that it is a Zelda related bonus disc released by Nintendo.

    2) Nintendo still hasn't confirmed it in any way, shape or form, so EB Games is likely breaching some confidentiality agreement by posting that little bit anyway.

  12. Retardedness of Internet rumour mill on Zelda GameCube Bundle Dated · · Score: 2, Interesting

How is it that everyone believes that this bundle has been confirmed, when all stories simply point toIGN's report??? IGN is the only website that has "confirmed it", but the only proof they offer is an easily created image of the bonus disc packaging, and every other site on the Internet has been quoting them like it's gospel!

Despite my cynicism, I sincerely hope the bonus disc exists. I've been a Zelda fan since the first game was released way back in the day, and I'd love to have it on a console again. But claiming that it's been confirmed just because one website has a story about it is irresponsible and annoying. It's times like this I truly hate the Internet, because it validates rumours with no real proof.

Finally, if you believe IGN and the rumour mill, and are displeased with the idea that the bonus disc may only be packaged with new Gamecubes), e-mail Nintendo. If they get enough e-mails, perhaps they'll release the disc separate from a bundle as well, even if it is at the normal retail price of a Gamecube game (it'd certainly be worth that price to me).

That's garbage. I was one of those naturally smart kids from pre-school to grade 12. A few times in elementary school I was refused the top student award because I didn't have to work as hard as the other students.

Despite this, I NEVER failed to hand in my homework assignments throughout my elementary and secondary education. I'm now ending my fourth year of university, and I've only skipped homework deliberately on ONE occasion where it didn't matter, because I already had credit for the course (accidently enrolled in an english course I already had an A+ in, due to screwy course transfer communication between my previous and present university).

At the front of each school year, teachers make it clear that homework will be assigned, and part of the student's grade will come from them. If the student is warned in that fashion, and they still refuse to complete the assigned homeworks, they deserve to get a lousy grade.

Finally, this grade-monitoring system shouldn't be seen as an invasion of privacy. Every parent has the right to know how their child is doing in school. They are supposed to be able to contact their child's teacher to ask, and this program just saves time for everyone.

All the students posting here just need to lose the self-righteous anger and quit lying to their parents. Do the damned homework and the monitoring won't be an issue.
