English is the language, that's it. Science and the Internet. Entry-level grammar is a snap to learn. But the spelling is infernal, so let's all remember to be tolerant of non-native speakers' mistakes, eh ?
Spelling reform is neded, but aul the proposals I've sene sufr frum trying tu fix everithing at wunce, in accordance with sumwun's idea w (="uv") a master plan. I'd say, du it incrementally, and tolerate old and nu in paralel, and see how it evolves.
I mene, it can't be THAT tuf tu figure out sum rules for reforming that monster knone as inglish spelling....
Can anyone find a transcript of what Thufir Hawat is saying into the mike when the attack is brewing ? It sounds way cool, very much like he's a stand-in for computers after the Butlerian Jihad. I just wish I knew what the heck he was saying.
And then I remember that the Internet is really not a big deal; it's just a toy for the few of us who are so rich that we don't worry about finding food to eat.
Agreed. IMHO all this computer stuff is mostly B.S., with one very important exception: technologies for the handicapped. What all of us have seen on TV, Steven Hawkings (sp.?) communicating and doing work despite it all, is duplicated every day on a very large scale by other people with handicaps. Oops, challenges.
The rest of this Internet stuff is largely SSDD. Unless of course you live in a repression land and you value any communications lifeline to the world outside.
So I guess my point is.. that the Internet has the potential to be a Great Equalizer, in more ways than one ?
I hope the medium is the message, because the content is 95% crap !
If I follow you.. maybe the simplest way to run this kind of operation is to have the books open. I've read about employee-run companies that do this, and it's a great help, because everyone is working on the same information.
I'm sure there's plenty of community-access TV channels that operate this way. Maybe look to them for an operational model ?
As for as finding operational management, well, come to think of it, there's no reason why you can't vote for management, eh ? Management is elected for fixed terms, or until (in an extraordinary meeting) they lose the confidence of the voting class.
It's bad enough seeing people with hands-free mobile phone sets, walking down the street apparently talking to themselves, without people yelling "sheet!" and "word!" and "mail!" at random...:-)
Or complete strangers leaning over and declaring "Delete all.. confirm.."
Which reminds me that in films, the robot always has a name, so that it knows when it's being spoken to. Sort of like my 1972 Chevelle. And in robot tradition, the name of the robot is its creator's name, backwards.
"D'nomder! Delete all! No, I don't want to see this dialog next time dammit!"
I like elm a lot, and it's in source code form, and it's been around forever, so I'm sure it's plenty cross-platform.
I'm posting to ask if anyone has any pointer to any "authoritative" elm sites ? Elm development seems to be badly fragmented, and things like MIME support and PGP support are kind of hit-or-miss.
The new consensus seems to be that you have to actively try to eat away at your old product lines, by developing new and improved product lines.
3M Corp always stood out; IIRC every division is expected to garner 35% of its income from products that did not even exist three years previously. Obviously this kind of organisational dynamic requires some funky organisational structures, and these structures might provide cover for those "intrapeneurs" who would eat away at the edges of the large organisation's older, more established, still-highly-profitable core businesses. Case in point: for the IBM PC, they sent everyone to Boca Raton and sheilded them from the rest of IBM.
I'd like to hear some "war stories" from people in the "skunk works" of large outfits, about battles fought to keep alive ideas that scared the hell out of other parts of the company.
"30,000 times more distant from the Sun than the Earth, putting it a significant fraction of the distance to the nearest star"
so that's 3e18 miles, or 30,000 times 1e14 miles-to-Earth, which means at 1.86e5 miles per second, light would take 5.37e8 seconds to get to Earth, when in fact earth is eight light-minutes from the Sun, or about 4.8e2 light-seconds, so their [the BBC's] math does not sound right !!
if we attack it a different way, 30,000 times 8 light-minutes is 24,000 light-minutes, or 400 light-hours, or 16.7 light days, which is only a bit over 1% of the way to Proxima Centauri, so this does not sound right either; it is hardly "a significant fraction of the distance to the nearest star"
Forget the US market, there's too many "standards". And who needs snap-on modems ? Inquiring European minds want to know, what about the GSM data capability that already lives in so many GSM phones ?
Does anyone have a pointer to any tech reference info ?
Do all GSM-data-capable phones have a TCP/IP stack that can run PPP ?
Do all mobile operators support GSM data ?
What is the basis for pricing, is it connect time or volume transfered ?
Can there be an incoming GSM data call, or does the handset always initiate a connection ?
Is there any subscriber info available for a GSM data connection ?
Is there a way to connect a GSM phone to a Linux box ?
If so, can I emulate an SMSC on Linux ?
Why does one brand of WAP phone (who shall remain unnamed) have a data channel, and also run WAP over SMS bearer, but not run WAP over PPP bearer ?
People like McCabe, they need some sort of self-help group that can get them organised and dealing with unearned riches and arranging their investments and getting them on the route do doing something philantropic. McCabe sounds lucky, he's getting good advice (even if he choosed not to listen to it), but there's gotta be lots more like him, but even less able to figure out what the hell they are doing with themselves.
Hey McCabe, if you're reading this, do it up ! Get something together and do yourself and folks like you a favor !

In this context, the movie is great! Princess Irulan's prolog sums up things perfickly, and off we go into the wild blue-tinted yonder.
On the other hand, if you've never seen the book, then film-only "literacy" bites you on the ass at this flick.
This is key ! Remedy time !!
A question shoulda been, "France is considering making Open Source mandatory for its government's use. Does that make it less desirable for the UK ?
That's 2330Z ? 00.30 Central European ? 01.30 Finnish time ?
Inquiring minds want to know !

If you want signal blocks, go blow some major bucks on a Märklin digital layout ! If you spend enough cash there's seriously nifty signalling.

Does this help at all ?
As you say, the opening display is not so good, kinda scrunched up to the top of the screen, but there has to be SOME way to fix it !

Once again: ouch!
Then again, not being WinCE has merits too ...
