I almost panicked. I mis-read the headline and thought that Zombo.com would no longer be the cutting edge website that it is!

  2. What about File Names? on Gentoo Package Accused of Violating DMCA · · Score: 1

From the paragraph above, it seems to imply that even naming your files in a way that is a variation of a copyrighted title is also forbidden. That would imply that having a file like 'FinalFantasyDiscussionArchive.zip' would be in violation of the DMCA. Am I interpreting this correctly?

  3. Re:I hate it when... on Interview with Voting Machine Company Reps · · Score: 2, Interesting

I think another anti-fraud device that an 'Electronic voting with Printout' system might have is cross checking.

    The procedure would be this

    1) You would get a printout-ballot encoded with machine AND human readable information after you make your selection via touch screen. Each printout ballot would be encoded with a unique, but anonymous control number.
    2) You would audit the printout to ensure the right selections were made.
    3) You would deposit the printout into a sealed ballot box.
    4) After the polling place closes, the electronic ballots are encrypted and transmitted to a separate secure computer.
    5) The printout-ballots are then tallied by a third party at a separate location, using the separate secure computer system.
    6) The printout ballots are cross checked with the electronic ballot information via the anonymous control number.
    7) If electronic ballot=printout ballot the vote counts, if not it doesn't

Since the voting information would be in two different formats, and tallied by two different people, the opportunity for fraud would be limited.

  6. Another Thing on Home-Built vs. Store-Bought PCs · · Score: 1

While this has been commented to death already, one thing you might want to watch out for is the location of any mail order houses. On price watch there may be a 2 dollar difference between numbers three and four, but if one is in 'zone 1' and the other in 'zone 4' (to use UPS speak, must most shipping companies have 'zone rates' in one form or another) the shipping charges can be quite different for the same level of service.

Another shipping consideration is damages. I ordered several items from a website based out of Chigago and it went through a certain hub of a certain carriers operation and was consistantly damaged. While the carrier paid for it, as it was packaged properly, it was a pain in the butt. I started ordering from a place that came from a different geographic direction and no problems whatsoever.

OK, they don't want me to link them. So istead I will set up a dynamic mirror on my server and link to that.

I'm not sure which is worse, a goofy policy like that, or that 'I' pay for NPR as a Tax-Paying citizen of the U, S, of A and am not free to utilize the information that 'I' paid for in way 'I' want to.

It seems that there are two camps forming. One that is looking at it from a technical "reproduction of waves" standpoint, and one that sees a synergy in the musical experience that includes things such as the emotional involvement of the musician, the room, audience, etc. That kind of reminds me about an article I read a while back where someone programmed a computer to compose in the style of Bach. The music that came out, according to 'true' musicians sounded like 'A computer programmed to compose in the style of Bach". Which would seem to lend some credibility to the second camp. Here is a link to an article about a similar experiment at Stanford a while back.

You're right, let the government fix it. I'm sure that they would be successful at it like... um... well.... oh yah, that's right, the government has screwed up everything they have laid their hands on.

On the plus side, high prices might actually be better in the long run. Higher prices will mean that more companies will get into the business, thus adding supply, ultimately resulting in lower prices in the long run as supply out grows demand.

I've been waiting to see something like a Co-op ISP show up somewhere. As other comments pointed out, backbone lines are relatively inexpensive. It would be interesting to see people in an apartment building or subdivision get together and create their own user-owned provider.

I think a more plausible less big-brotherly approach would be an international agreement where all parties would design their spacecraft to burn up/leave orbit/whatever. Part of it could be technology sharing where the more developed space programs share the how's and whatnots involved with ensuring a controlled re-entry that won't squish anyone.
