This is a linux computer in a car that has very specific hardware and limited functionality.
So it's just like a Mac in fact...
Wake me up when you can get a true desktop machine to boot in 1 second and then we can talk. This is like saying, "My toaster runs linux and it can boot instantly!"
But theproblem is these are students and they have work to do. by pulling their plug you are not allowing them to get the work done that they are I presume there to do. So thats not an option.
That's like saying you can't take a drunk driver's license away, because he needs it to drive to work.
No it isn't. It's like letting a drunken driver continue his ride, because he needs to get home or wherever. It's even worse.
So the executive flying to L.A. won't be able to access the documents while on a 4-hour flight. Nor will he be able to do so from the hotel unless they open up the firewall to let him access the authentication server--something that seems inherently dangerous considering it's Microsoft we're talking about. Employees may not be able to work from home
Anyone that is willing to accept this kind of
annoyances must have very sensitive data.
Now
if I had any secrets to protect, I'd prefer encrypted files that are en/decrypted by a supplementary layer of my filesystem when I access
them. I'd certainly not trust any security features from Redmond, as there will be cracks available before the first beta is out.
On the other hand, if I were to try to steal data from a competitor, the perspective of being sued for DRM breach wouldn't turn me off when I'd want
to expose myself to being busted for espionnage
Gibraltar is a really good free firewall IMHO. Boots from CD, reads config from floppy, and you're not trapped in some limitative gui like with 'SuSE fw on CD' and similar stuff. Just fiddle until it feels right, then issue 'save-config' and the entire/etc (plus ~root) gets saved to the floppy. You could even write protect the floppy if you can afford to travel to the fw each time you want to save the config.
Maybe the Foreign office should consider buying hardware from manufacturers that provides drivers?

Big freaking deal.
... I sure wish I hadn't seen it either. What a waste of time.

Anyone with cats knows that this should read:
Can you come up with a single example of when somebody was harmed because of cookies?
Tons of 'em. Unhealthy food is the threat number one in the western world.
And I have a cat code-named cookie.
