Not only that, from what I understand, Metastatic cancer cells travel via blood. If this could grab those, that'd be awesome. So many cancer stories seem to involve killing the main site of the disease only to have it reoccur a few months or years later somewhere else, this time metastatic and basically incurable.

Start this treatment up right after diagnosis, and continue it through the normal cancer treatment. If this device could be used to detect metastatic cancer cells in the blood, even better (but maybe this is reaching - still, cool to consider).

There are a few interesting ways AI can be applied to the game of Magic the Gathering - this is one, and it's cool to see this guy's project, and the results.

I've done a little bit of thinking in this area, but more in the area of making an AI play with the goal of searching for new competitive deck lists.

I posted on my blog about my approach a while back: Getting Your Computer to Make an Awesome New Magic the Gathering Deck

Another interesting tack would be to see if you can write an agent to create single cards with mechanics that actually move second-tier decks into first-tier competitiveness, looking at the current metagame. WotC probably wouldn't take your advice on new cards, though, as they probably prefer to keep card design in-house.

Haven't had the time to actually try to implement something (too busy futzing with Minecraft modding), but maybe one of these days I'll make it happen.

What about telling the EPA to look into letting California define their own, stricter auto emissions standards (instead of locking them to the federal standards like Bush did)?

What about striking down Bush's ban on giving federal money to international groups that perform abortions or provide abortion information? Obama keeps talking about wanting to "work with them," and "bring them to the table," etc., and that's the same garbage Democrats have been spewing for ages (including the current crop in congress - just look at what they have accomplished since being elected, very little).

You can't negotiate with jackals. They'll just try to take what they want and try to convince you it's negotiating (as shown in the current congress, all bills, "requiring 60 votes to pass" because the Republicans will filibuster -anything- they don't like, etc.).

Seven years ago, when I started grad school at UMass Amherst, they were talking about this stuff in the robotics lab. This is hardly new stuff.

One of the ideas I got out of their talk about their research was that babies start using their muscles gradually, with only a few degrees of motion to start, and moving up from there. For instance, you'll notice that when a baby starts using his hands, he just grabs things for a while. There is no fine grained control of the fingers, and even the control necessary to consciously release whatever he grabbed doesn't come until later.

I have to agree with you. I just bought a Prius and have the same experience.

We were comparing the Prius to the Toyota Matrix / Pontiac Vibe (same car) and the Mazda 3, and at $2000 more we decided we would not only be getting a hybrid with great gas mileage, but an all-around better car.

It's a mid size car, not a dinky Geo metro (although I used to love my Geo metro for its gas mileage), and has lots of space. We wanted something bigger since we have a kid on the way, but we didn't want to go the SUV route that our parents were encouraging us to take. It helped that it got great reviews by Consumer Reports.

Plus, the ~ $750 tax credit at the end of the year effectively means it was $750 cheaper than what we actually paid.

I just bought a new Prius with most of the luxury features for $21,470 straight from the Toyota dealer. The package I got included:

    Smart Key system

7-speaker system with CD player and aux in jack

(package 2 I believe) - basically all of the good stuff and none of the waste (in my opinion)

When I fold down the seats I have tons of room - transported a new crib this last week.

And this doesn't even take into account that I got an extra $400 paid for by Toyota (college student financing) to finance the $5000 I didn't pay in cash (but will pay off next month), as well as the ~ $750 tax credit I'm going to be able to claim at the end of the year.

I have averaged 50 mpg since I got it, so I feel like I got a darn good deal.

It's also possible that you might be able to do it all with the Reflection API, without having to resort to JNI - I just came across the allocation functionality while I was creating some Java-C++ bridge code.
