Dead tree books will definitly be here for a while. No batteries, very easy to hilite. I have fond memories of an old IBM Basic handbook that I took everywere.

On the books I like to see side, more security certifications books would be nice.

You don't have to file a DBA for a company that has your full name in the title (at least in Colorado, pretty sure every were else) i.e. John Doe's Plumbing, but you would for Master Plumbing or even J.D's Plumbing.

P.S (DBA stands for Doing Business As, which can be filed with your county recorder or state treasurer)

  4. Pros and Cons on To Inc. or Not to Inc.? · · Score: 3, Funny

I'm assuming the recruiter is suggesting that you create a corporation that hires yourself that offers consulting services.

    Pros:
Limited liability - If you mess up, they can only sue your corporation. Think of it as a sheild.

Another pro, since the government is hiring a company (yours) and not a person, if you screw up, your boss can complain only to the company that hired you.

From the Bastard Operator From Hell

"So we're screwed whatever we do?" The Boss sighs.

"Yep - that's why it's called a disaster. We only have personal recovery plans here."

    "Which are?"

"Send each other's contracting companies bust by suing each other for negligence before this company can get to us. Then hide in the Third World (Liverpool) till the noise dies down, and get a new contract with another company."

The biggest con is expense, a document of incorporation can cost upwards of $10,000

The other con would be taxes, as the corporation's taxes must be filed seperatly from yours.

    Hope that helps

Yes, this would be considered a crime, if it was someone elses property. First off, lockpicking (even if you're good at it) is intrusive and destructive.

Secondly, that's trespassing, and may cause the owner of the lock to feel a loss of security if they discover it being picked.

Thirdly, if you are caught or id'd at the scene, but nothing was stolen, most courts will say that you demonstrated intent to steal. Lockpicking is time consuming and requires a great deal of concentration, leading to the obvious conclusion that you intended to steal, but were thwarted.

  6. Re:Reverse engineering is an inalianable right. on Slashback: Cheats, Entries, Loki · · Score: 2, Informative

That is actually a very astute point. I believe that in Texas, it is legal to own your own pickset, and to open your own locks with it, but if using lockpicking skills to commit a crime, that increases the penalties, because you demonstrated specialized knowledge. And you'd think that lockpicking would have a greater potential for breaking the law than would reverse enginerring.

  8. Other Degrees to consider on On the Differences Between MIS/CIS/CS Degrees? · · Score: 1

There are two other degree's that you might want to consider:

Computer Engineering - The difference between this and a CS degree is application vs. research. CE focuses more on the actual application, and hardware side, whereas CS, you'll get more theory and have to do more research.

It really boils down to distance from the hardware. The engineering track will, in general, bring you closer to the hardware, you'll focus more on assembly and C, while the science path will focus on a more abstracted model.

CS would be good for web and application programming, while CE would be used for game and OS programming, which require a more intimate knowledge of the archietechture.

However, this can get tricky, as it will vary by school. Some schools will only teach one or the other, and you will see some coverage from the subject they aren't teaching, while a school that offers both will seperate more.

The other subject you might look at is Computer and Electrical Engnierring. This brings you even closer to the hardware level, you'll be dealing almost exclusivly with Asembler, and will be using a soldering iron more than a compiler.

Consider this for robotics, device drivers, satillite, and embedded device fields.

If you are in the Denver/Boulder area, consider CU - Boulder, they teach Computer Science in the Engineering and Applied Sciences college, and also of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

  10. Things to take into account on Chilean Monks Need Linux Help? · · Score: 2, Informative

The systems you are dealing with may have special needs. Depending on the age they may not have very much memory at all. You may want to consider canabalizing some of the computers for there parts to boost ram.

Sometimes ram can be so problematical that the installation media won't fit into ram. In this case, make one computer with enough ram (canabalize if you have to) that you can install linux on it. It should be nearly identical to all the other computers. Then use that disk image to create the other hard disks for the other machines.

If you have problems with init running out of memory before the system is loaded, use this command at the lilo prompt

    lilo: linux init=/bin/ash

That will just load up the ash command prompt (ash has a very tiny memory profile)

You can remount the drives with `mount / -o rw, remount`

Also, you may need to use an earlier kernel, as they take up less space in memory (The entire kernel must be loaded into ram)

It'll be slow, with all the swapping but it should get the job done.
