Seriously, I was in this position a couple of years ago. A firm that I worked for forced me to relocate and then at the last minute decided that they couldn't afford to give me the expenses and pay-rise that I had been promised (in promise, read not contractually - i.e. no come back)
I was forced to leave them and spend 8 months unemployed.
A year later, I got a phone call. The company that I worked for were a CD-ROM Database publisher, and the time had come to update their databases. They suddenly realised that no-one there knew how to update them!
I was very pleasant to them. I agreed to look at the update and then quote them a consulting fee to do it. Duly, the data arrived and I had a look. I estimated it would take me 2 days to get it to a position where I could hand it off, so I decided to charge them £5000.
They balked, they choked, they squealed, and at the end of the day they paid!
Made me happy, especially when the same thing happened the following year! (this time they asked me to visit and train someone to do it - I therefore doubled my fee!)
This development is making me think of Star Trek bridge controls.
According to the Star Trek TNG Encyclopaedia, the Bridge Controls automatically adapt to the function being performed.
Now that's all very well, but I expect my 'Channel Up' button to be in the same place ever time. If we start getting adaptive controls who says where these buttons are going to end up?!
B. -- Get your sig here: cheap rates and it works! (well, You're reading it!)
So, anyone thinking of relocating to Germany then? The country with 20k 'serious' criminals that need wiretapping.. I'm just on my way to buy an airline ticket........ OUT!
Sure.. Where are ya? :)
