How do we know they are really going to make an effort? Microsoft PR has been full of shit since the first press release. From the Windows 1.0 release "just two months away"(when it was really a full 18 month development cycle from completion), MS PR makes promises it doesn't intend to keep, and often lies outright ("Windows ME is the fastest, most reliable Windows 9x ever!").
Btw, remember the last time MS went after something with a vengeance? I do.
Yeah, it was on slashdot yesterday. Bribing politicians with a vengence. Too bad they can't do the same thing to their customers (think "Windows is more stable...and here's your kickback to prove it!")
The DMCA isn't about patents in that way, it's about copyright. That guy can't have his serial cable because he could use it(not bloody likely) to circumvent the copyright protection on music CDs and (possibly, depending on interpetation), dreamcast disks.
That's the reason the DMCA is such a bad law. It bans anything (ANYTHING) which can be used to circumvent copy protection.
It's like banning(and making it illegal to sell or distribute, or information on how to create) butterknives because they could be plunged into a persons chest. Stupid. Immoral too.
You forgot the thrid -- the most dangerous: Arithmatic. People say it'll be used for "science", and "physics", and "the good of mankind", but we all know that the only use of Mathematics and Logic is breaking copyright protection schemes!
I'll give you that -- but *only* because I like games. If it wasn't for that, it'd take a pretty useless human being to match the uselessness of a pirated copy of Windows.:)
I'm wondering...if they were to get the actual source code, could MS be charged with prejury(lying under oath...spelled wrong perhaps...)? If it turned out that Microsoft has been lying the whole time (like we all know they were), I wonder if they could be punished severely? Even if MS can't be charged, their "consultant" who "testified" would get hammered. Good. One less slimy liar in the world.
This patch proves once again that Linux is the best operating system of them all, even better than Windows.
I wouldn't say that, I'm quite partial to BeOS, personally. I know it hasn't a hope in hell of being continued(except through efforts like OpenBeOS), but it's still a truly amazing OS, which can do things which other OSs wish they could do on teh same hardware.
Yeah, it only took 2 years for it to get integrated. If MS was that lazy, the slash-shit would hit the fan.
I find that funny. It took MS 5 years to hop on the internet bandwagon. Same with a fully 32-bit OS. 5 years. 2 years looks downright speedy -- and good luck getting MS to integrate somebody elses code into theirs. They *still* haven't fixed the bug in Direct Cable Connection which disallows the use of an ECP cable(which is hella fast.), though a patch for that has been on the internet for almost 4 years now.
It could be, but I've only seen 9 billion 'video games sales'.
My interpetation could be true, considering there seems to be more space in the PC games industry(just from casual observation).
If software has bugs that are easy to see, and come up frequently, it's perceived as "buggy", and few people will download it, and fewer eyes will look for the bugs.
This is strange...People a few weeks back were talking about how much money is in the console market, but judging from the numbers(correct me if I'm misinterpeting them), the PC industry made up almost 2/3 of the games market total!
Methinks MS just wants a bigger slice of the pie with the X-BOX, considering they control the PC market, but aren't guaranteed a piece of the profits games companies are making.
First, I'm not a troll, even if my opinion may make it seem like it. I post my opinions, and whether or not my opinions are happy and peppy visions of a utopian future(like everybody seems to want), they remain my own.
Taxes aren't the only gauge of the minority getting screwed.
Think of several laws passed recently, whose existance could only have been suggested (and aggressively pursued) by the rich(or does the digital equivilant of banning knives help the majority somehow?).
Think of this whole Microsoft thing. Why the fuck does a convicted criminal get off with less than a slap on the wrist? Especially after being convicted once, and using loopholes to get out of their obligations once already? I can't think of any regular individual or small business who could get away with that, but MS is getting off virtually scott free.
I think the existance of the DMCA, and all the other crap I've(okay, we've -- I learned it on the internet, I'm sure I'm not alone) seen proves what I said is true.
(How long before the inevitably, unfunny, but modded up jokes about Microsoft making employees write those form letters, or jsut the letters in general come along?)
looks like you've got the right idea.

satire is fun, guy!
What?! You guys don't store gigabytes and gigabytes of C code on your hard drives?
I'm so disillusioned now.
I'll give you that -- but *only* because I like games. If it wasn't for that, it'd take a pretty useless human being to match the uselessness of a pirated copy of Windows. :)
because as we all know....
imagine a beowolf cluster of hot grits since BSD is dying!
Now *that* is how you commit karma suicide!
That's also how to get flamed out of existance by small-minded idiots!
Slightly more useful than a pirated copy of windows, aparantly... :)
No, that's just American democracy in action. Don't worry.
After all, nobody was angry about criminals being let go, why should it anger anybody that they bought their way out?

when you're really living in an imperialist dictatorship?
You know the "land of the free" is in trouble when it takes firearms and bombs to make your representitives listen.

I hope voice recog is better than the last time I used it!
Trying to load stairway to heaven:
"Stairway...delete that...Stairway...delete that...no! Delete that!...Shit...delete that...delete that...delete that... Stairway...to...delete that...to...delete that...to...delete that...to...heaven...delete that...heaven...delete that...heaven...delete that...heaven...play...delete that...play...delete that...play...delete that...play...delete that..."
:)
I hate voice recognition.
This is the trippiest AC thread I've ever read!
:)
for those who don't read at 0, I'll sum the whole discussion down right now.
person 1: OSS sucks.
Person 2(re: Person 1): Microsoft sucks. OSS is better.
Person 3(re: Person 2): Linux sucks. BSD is better.
So to sum it all up,
Everything sucks!
You'd be suprised what can be accomplished by individuals or small groups working outside of corporate influence.
I hate to break this to you, but the "OSS model" was set up long before people started making a profit.
Here's the model:
1)I write a program. I think it's kind of cool, I release it for free.
2)I include the source in the archive
3)My involvement ends.
It could be, but I've only seen 9 billion 'video games sales'.
My interpetation could be true, considering there seems to be more space in the PC games industry(just from casual observation).

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
LOL!
Have you seen the state of the computing industry? Buggy, crappy software makes up a monopoly-scale market share!
People are stupid. Tell them they want something, and they'll want it.

Ditto.

uh....joking?
heh.
:)
Bill Gates == Doc Kevorkian.(not spelled right, but it's a joke, so lay off!)
at least for PCs.
semi-off topic, but I'd like to point something out.
I was just reading about this on The Register, and I hit a link regarding what the 9 remaining states are preposing.
As usually happens, the article discusses what Microsoft will allow.
To that, I say this: Punish Microsoft. If they resist the punishment, revoke their charter, and heavily fine Microsoft Executives.
A simple ultimatum, isn't it? "You have broken the law. Accept the punishment, or die."
