  1. Re:Do not want on Nationwide Shortage In Supply of Swine Flu Vaccine · · Score: 1

I work in industry, so what I'm about to say applies to industry, and may only be allegorical in medicine.

One of the axioms we have for preventative maintenance is whenever you touch a piece of equipment, there's a risk of causing a failure that wouldn't have otherwise happened. Modern maintenance programs will often determine that you'll achieve better reliability on a piece of equipment by leaving it alone and letting it run.

Some flu vaccinations can increase your H1N1 risk, so I'd argue this idea has merit.

On the other side of things, there's a cost/benefit. For the possibility of causing harm through unnecessary preventative maintenance, you may avoid an illness that for most people won't be anywhere near fatal. It's a flu. We've had a flu every single year for millennia. Even if you get it, you're looking at two weeks untreated, or fourteen days treated.

So you're causing a risk just by doing something, there's a low chance you'll get anything, and if you do get something, it'll likely be comparable to the seasonal flu. Calling the choice not to waste your time "insane" is utterly lacking in any sense of scale.

Vaccines for diseases with high mortality rates makes sense. Vaccines for the seasonal flu is fixing what ain't broke, which always introduces risk.

I think in the United States, it's illegal for anyone but congress to create legal tender.

The purpose of creating a federal government was to standardize trade between the states, and the creation of a common form of currency was one of those standardizations. It's a power given to the congress directly by the constitution, rather than the later programs which are given by loopholes in section 8.

This seems like a lose-lose scenario for NVidia. Either they support other GPUs and risk getting smacked down with conspiracy theories or "lol nvidia is crap" when the famously shitty drivers from companies like S3 break PhysX, or they lock out competitors GPUs to maintain their reputation and get smacked down with conspiracy theories or "lol nvidia is crap".

But it does seem like win-win for nvidia in a sense if they take the first option. If PhysX takes off but ATI has a better gpu, then Nvidia still gets a sale from the hardcore crowd who want an accelerator. If Nvidia has the better gpu, then Nvidia gets the sale anyway.

It's a smart idea becoming an essential part to all PCs.

My point was that existing iconographic languages are actually moving towards phoenetics because of the impracticalities of iconographic languages.

A little research would help put things into perspective.

The Latin/Roman alphabet actually descended from Egyptian Hieroglyphics. Over time, the symbols came to represent words.

Phonetic written languages are incredibly powerful because of their amazing flexibility. To be literate in Japanese, you need to learn 2000 characters. To be literate in Chinese, you need to learn 4000 characters. To be literate in English, you need to learn 26 characters and half a dozen punctuation marks.

To give you an idea of where things are headed, consider this: Japanese and Chinese alphabets now include symbols from the Roman alphabet as well as our punctuation marks. There has been some adoption of western alphabets in China because of the ease of writing compared to the logographic language. Besides douchebags with tatoos, is there any place that we've picked up parts of the Japanese or Chinese alphabets in our writing?

There was a story recently about Lord of the Rings, how the estate of J. R. R. Peter Jackson sued the studios as well, claiming their accounting methods understated revenues, and settled for an undisclosed sum.
