  1. Re:passwords.. on Hack AT&T Voicemail With Android · · Score: 1

He's got a point. Why can't voice mail run over some data connection authenticated by the phone's unique ID or something similar? They certainly do billing that way. It is 2010, and voice mail still works by having the phone call out to a magic number- how antiquated!

Doesn't that defeat the whole "GSM; move your SIM from one phone to another" thing?

  2. just say "no thank you" to the riaa etc. on Web Radio Negotiations Carry Poison Pill · · Score: 1

Visit garageband.com, cdbaby, myspace, podsafe music network, etc. to find some great music that is being distributed by songwriters who are not part of the commercial music world. It's time to say "no thank you" and move on.

  3. Whatever it's called, it's still Metadata on Labels Not Tags, Says Google · · Score: 0, Offtopic

However, having a standard is important for interopperability. I suggest that folk look at the Dublin Core metadata standards. Check out the Wikipedia article on Dublin Core.

  4. My response to RIAA on RIAA Arrests Pro Artist for Making Mixtapes · · Score: 1

I recommend that you print out a copy of the members of the RIAA and put it in your wallet. Before you buy a CD, check to see if the label is a member. If it is, just put the CD back and go find an independent artist on CD Baby or GarageBand.com I quit buying stuff from Sony after their malware fiasco, but have since expanded my boycott to all RIAA members.

  5. vote with your money? on Techies Asked To Train Foreign Replacements · · Score: 3, Insightful

I don't have a BoA account so I have nothing to close, but I wonder how many other techies are going to their local BoA branch and pulling out their money. What a great opportunity for the credit unions. Imagine the advertising campaign: "Your Federal Credit Union, we don't send jobs overseas."

  10. paradigm shift on Why Haven't Online Newspapers Gotten it Right? · · Score: 1

The problem that newspapers are having "getting" the internet is similar to the problem that telephone companies had. In both cases it's a paradigm shift. Because only a few publishers could afford the information collecting, writing/editing, printing and distribution required to make a successful paper, there were a limited number of players and they felt that they owned the news. (phone companies were stuck on the message unit concept...slightly different but similar).

Murdoch, in a recent speech, talked about the News corp. investing in, and owning a portal. Yawn! If a newspaper wants to understand how the internet is changing their world, they should examine slashdot.

  11. Re:PODCASTING!!! on Apple Holding Back the Music Business? · · Score: 1

Even though my podcast is focused on technology, I always include a tune by an indie musician. I've received feedback from musicians that exposuire on my podcast and others has brought them new fans, got people into their concerts and sold CD's and iTunes downloads. Podcasts rock.

  13. it's all about indie's. on After Brief Respite Music Industry Slump Deepens · · Score: 1

I won't go so far as to say I'll never buy another RIAA CD but I have no current plans. Between the independent music on GarageBand.com, CDBaby, iTunes, etc. there is a lot of amazing stuff waiting for you. If you buy CD's, do so from the artists.

  14. Good for librarians too... on Taking Linux On The Road With Ubuntu · · Score: 5, Interesting

I've been following the issues that many librarians have with having to be part of government snooping of internet logs on their patrons. By using Linux live distros like Ubantu, this problem seems to go away. If the snoops want to snoop, they can do so further upstream and not involve the librarians.

Of course, I fully expect a new law that makes USB ports on public computers illegal.

  15. Perspective from a firefighter. on Hurricane Relief - What Would You Bring? · · Score: 2, Interesting

OK, a retired firefighter but I did 20 years with the local volunteer squad. This is my go kit:

All the normal stuff you travel with plus:

an LED headlamp, the battery charger, and a bunch of regular alkaline batteries to keep it powered.

An assortment of gloves and some ear plugs.

A waterproof bag http://www.ortliebusa.com/ for my gear.

All the usual travel stuff (small first aid kit, sewing kit, etc.)

A powerstrip so that I can be a good citizen when I need to plug in a charger

  19. Re:Calls to Cuba? Any decent rates anywhere? on How Do You Make International Calls? · · Score: 1

Skype charges .832 euro cents a minute for calls to Cuba. If you pay VAT, it's a little more expensive. I believe that the reason calls to Cuba cost more is the tax charged by the Cuban government on international phone calls, but I could be wrong.

  20. Re:My experience with skype-out on How Do You Make International Calls? · · Score: 1

Skype-out is my main LD method for calls to Eastern and Western Europe. The reason that calls to cell phones are more expensive is that in most of the world (except for the US, and a very few others), the person making the call to a cell phone plays the bill. Occasionally I get a "connection failed" but mostly it works.

I use iChat for audio calls to/from some of my clients. While not currently connected to the PTSN, for calls to another iChat user, it works great.

    I'm located in Florida.
  21. Government Requirements for Healthcare Software on Developing for Healthcare - .NET vs J2EE? · · Score: 1

A little off-topic but still salient to the discusion: In your post, you don't say what country you live in the south of. If it's the US, be aware that there are two sets of rules that your software will have to live under. HIPAA of course, deals with access to protected medical information. 21CFR11 deals with software as a "medical device" and in many ways, is more difficult to work with than HIPAA. The problem with 21CFR11 is that it's a moving target without real specific rules.

The main things to keep in mind are version control, encrypted signatures, audit trails for everything, access logs for everything.

  22. From the eShed... on Running a Server at Freezing Temperatures? · · Score: 1
I used to work in a facility that kept a tank of liquid nitrogen outside. It was piped into the comptuer room to keep the CPU cabinets cool. As far as I can tell, cold is good when it comes to computers.

As far as hard drives go, check the drive manufactures web site for specifications. I also think that keeping them running is important and a big honking battery backup is a good idea.

Finally, from what you say, it's a pretty small space. As long as the outside was somewhat tight, a combination of fiberglass insulation and some sort of inside paneling would take a couple of weekends at the most, and would not cost a fortune.

Mostly, I proud of you for having a server in your garage and wonder how it connects to the rest of your network. Here in Florida, I mostly use fiber for outdoor runs.
