I agree that the IT job market is no where near dead. I work at a small internet company, and hiring competent IT employees is always a hassle. The problem is not that it is hard to find a job in the computer industry, it is that there arent enough competent people.
Whenever the subject of tech jobs comes up around here, you can always count on a number of posts from people who know this language and that, years of experience, etc etc going for months or years without employment as if the jobs didn't exist. I too, thought that IT/tech jobs were extremely few and far between until I got the opportunity to interview for a programming gig that I was in no way qualified for.
It was then that I found out what the parent stated, truely qualified people are tough to find for these jobs.
I run a bar and decide to get some live music, so I call up a group of musicians. A popular and very well known band, of course, I don't want to drive my patrons out. They tell me "sure, we'll come and play, just give us some money." So I send them a payment, and the day of the performance, they show up with a 50 page contract. "Just sign this and we'll be set". I look over it, and I see among it's provisions that they're going to firebomb the stage at the end of the show. I give them the contract back and tell them no.
Then they firebomb the stage.
Moral of the story: Don't hire Gwar to play at your bar.
That is trespass and thus the state should be involved since it was illegal activity.
Might makes right. A cracker who sends trojans or rootkits may actually see fines or jailtime. A corporation who does the same thing is just protecting its IP or, if suitably backed into a corner, admit they made a mistake and continue doing the same crap with a different name. You'll never see a single indictment for wrongdoing at a large company for this.
without the FCC you would never know when you turn on the TV if the rich prick down the street is broadcasting goatse over all the channels at 5000 watts
Do not attempt to adjust your set. We have taken control. Slashdot TV is on the air!
Yes, the torrent of cliches would be too much. Almost as much as if Slashdot sponsored a Natalie Portman grit-a-thon to benefit St. Goatse's Home for Wayward Anuses.
However if they are filtering content, controlling what an end user can and cannot access, then won't the courts hold them accountable for this behaviour?
Yes, you're referring to common carrier status. As long as the legislature is bought and paid for, I'm sure this loophole will be closed before long where they can filter and divert packets that threaten their revenue but wash their hands of responsibility for copyright infringement and kiddie pr0n.
As it stands now, common carrier says that they either let data ride on their network without discrimination or they become accountable for everything that comes across it.

And where's the penile mod?
The producers of the new Superman film would sue, claiming prior art.
Sadly, they appear to have, at least for the moment, found a way around such onerous strictures as that expectation that we behave like human beings.
Even more sadly, looking back at our recorded history, we are acting like human beings. We haven't evolved much from the ape who first used a tool to club the crap out of the ape with the nicer foodstuff. Only the tools have changed.
Another thing you have to wonder is what qualifies as an engineer in China or India. In Cuba, it was a point of pride amongst the communist government there that they had more doctors per capita than any other country. In reality, they had extremely loose criteria of who can be called a doctor, thus artificially inflating the numbers. Would communist China do anything less to keep up appearances at all costs?
Do we HAVE to invent new contorted words for every variation of everything these days? Podjacking? Webinar? Blogosphere, podosphere? Vlog? Moblogging? I'm in pain here!
Were Norton AV and the other anti-virus suites silent as Sony's rootkit ran wild on peoples systems? If so, their software would be in the garbage immediately if this were on one of my boxes.

They kept a bunch of extra embryos frozen in case of accident.
Wife: Oh no, little Timmy got hit by a truck!
Husband(holding up jar): No matter, we've got backups.
Wife: Whew! What a relief. Maybe this one won't be such a dumbass.
Was this back when nickels had pictures of bumblebees on them?
How is it a fair comparison to take the windows binaries out of the context of their menus but leave the Ubuntu apps in the context of theirs?
Thompson wouldn't know up from down, left from right, A from B, B from A, Select from Start.
Don't give an ass like him infinite lives!

Old programmers? Heavens no!
When their crystals turn color, they go through Carousel and are never heard from again.
Actually, Ted Kennedy showed up on a NFL. There is a Republican Congressman who is also on the List.. can't recall the name off the top of my head.
Also, there's no mechanism for getting off of the NFL. What they claim to do is add a note next to your name on the list.
Oh well, he can just drive to wherever he needs to go...
Ummm, never mind.

I sure as hell don't. If you think the pervert in the trenchcoat flashing is bad, then you're in for a world of hurt when Count Chocula starts too.
Flashing stuff on boxes all over the supermarket? That's got to be a nightmare for those suffering from epilepsy.
In this age of data mining, persons afflicted with a seizure at the supermarket will quickly receive a coupon for a free shake from Baskin Robbins.

How come you got modded straight up to +4 inspite of posting anonymously linus?
You must be new here. Anonymous Coward is Linus' logon. I'm glad he finally kicked his goatse trolling habit.
Don't worry, Yoko Ono will come along any minute now and break it up.
Nah, that's unpossible.

Those are perfectly cromulent words.

Don't mod the parent down. He speaks the tooth.
