Just make sure you don't use a smart filesystem like ReiserFS, which can use the slack space for storage. If you try to put something in its slack space you might find yourself a bit lost...
I'm working on a project and I would need to make a Linux distro that loads up a simple, locked, X screen with a custom made web browser. How would this be most easily done? This is in many ways like an embedded Linux environment...
It's just the first step in the right direction. When we have the laws that make it illegal, it will become a problem for the government, as it has to make sure that these laws are followed. More and more restrictions will arise thanks to these laws, and might actually slowly make spamming a hell of a pain for the spammers.
It depends very much on the student. Usually, when a student uses a different system at home than at a university, he will notice good things and bad things in both systems. This will direct the student into using the system that is best suited for him/her. Is the university uses Linux, it will only open more doors for the students, it won't take the students away from their Windows system at home (if that's what the students are using). Eventually, they will use the best system.
I love my RedHat, but if this deal goes through, I'll seriously consider changing to another distro. I've really enjoyed RedHat because of it's open nature, but I doubt AOL can keep its hands of it. I really don't want anything made by AOL on my computer...
One thing that would help decrease the bandwidth usage is a good proxy. This won't give users more bandwidth, but it should remove some extra bandwidth usage when people download the same things. The real problem probably comes from file-sharing programs and warez servers. A good firewall should do the trick, but a firewall that disables ICQ and such is not a good firewall.
we have one word that I have not encountered outside of Sweden
Well, in Finland you will encounter the word as Finland's 2nd official language is swedish. I guess the writer meant that he/she has not encountered the word in any other language.
Won't really help Windows as a server

Apache 2.0 vs. IIS

Ironically, all of the developments mean the biggest beneficiary of the release of Apache 2.0 could be Microsoft."
Ok, fine, Apache is much better than IIS in Windows, but why the... would anyone seriously want to run Windows as a server (other reasons than the fact that one can be braindead to use Windows, but then again, that's the result)?
This is yet a great example of the trustworthy, reliable and functional software open source provides. This kind of hiding in the source wouldn't work in an open source program.

If you're going to use another drive, you might as well go for RAID and have the backups done automatically and continuously.
RAID is only good for a server which needs to have 100% availiability. RAID is not a good backup option for many reasons. For instance, what happens when you get a virus/worm/whatever? It wipes out your data, and doesn't care if the data is on you backup drive.
RAID also costs alot, and you need two identical HDs. We are talking about a home backup system, RAID is definetely not a home backup system.
They'll probably just implement Windows Update on it, and put an update fee for every update. After a few years it would have been cheaper to just buy a computer put that under your TV set.
Yes, you should absolutely use conduit. After 10, 20 or 40 years, you'll be swearing and kicking the walls when you realize you have to change all the wires and you don't have conduit (unless everything has gone wireless, but I doubt that).
However, you should really think about what kind of conduit you plan to use. After 40 years, things tend to rotten, and if you have cheap conduit it might not last that long. And while installing it, you should make it the simplest task to upgrade all the cables. You still have to do that one day...
And the cables you want to run really depend on what you use them for. But if you know you don't really need fiber now, you most probably don't need it after 5 or 10 years. Go with the cat5e. If you notice you need fiber after 10 years, fine, rewire your house, it will be easy because you used good conduits, and fiber will probably cost next to nothing after 10 years.
Let's say Slashdot sends out an email to its users telling them about something very important. The mail every user recieves is identical, and most of the users want't to recieve it.
Someone want's to abuse the system and reports the message as spam. Now none of the users using razor will recieve it.
Is this possible, or am I just not getting the big picture?

But are they large as in a large company, not a large user base?
Who would have guessed?!
Can anyone name a large tech company that isn't being sued at the moment?

Is there such a thing as a low-end used laptop anymore, and where?
I've got one right here... An old IBM ThinkPad, 486 with 16mb RAM, 250mb HD, runs Debian. Wanna buy?
It's just the first step in the right direction.

and gives you the source code
Since when does Netscape give out its source?? Mozilla is open, but if I can recall, Netscape hasn't given out its source for several years.
Yes, now let's implement IPv6 before these 'netless' people come online. It will be easier with less people, so start speeding things up =)

I don't really mind the banners, you don't need to look at them! =)
/. is doing and want to support them. I mean come on, $5 is the price of a hamburger meal!
However, I will pay $5 / ½year, I really love what
I'm paying €100/month for 1meg down, 256k up. That includes 5 static ips, and great response times.

According to experts, the recent discovery and close approach of 2001 YB5 suggests that something nasty could creep up on us at any time.
Still talking about asteroids? =)
