It depends very much on the student. Usually, when a student uses a different system at home than at a university, he will notice good things and bad things in both systems. Is the university uses Linux, it will only open more doors for the students, it won't take the students away from their Windows system at home (if that's what the students are using). Eventually, they will use the best system.

One thing that would help decrease the bandwidth usage is a good proxy. This won't give users more bandwidth, but it should remove some extra bandwidth usage when people download the same things. The real problem probably comes from file-sharing programs and warez servers. A good firewall should do the trick, but a firewall that disables ICQ and such is not a good firewall.

  22. Re:Hard Drives on Affordable Home Backups for 10-100G Systems? · · Score: 1

If you're going to use another drive, you might as well go for RAID and have the backups done automatically and continuously.

RAID is only good for a server which needs to have 100% availiability. RAID is not a good backup option for many reasons. For instance, what happens when you get a virus/worm/whatever? It wipes out your data, and doesn't care if the data is on you backup drive.
RAID also costs alot, and you need two identical HDs. We are talking about a home backup system, RAID is definetely not a home backup system.

  24. Re:Don't do either yet. on Wiring A New House? · · Score: 2, Informative

Yes, you should absolutely use conduit. After 10, 20 or 40 years, you'll be swearing and kicking the walls when you realize you have to change all the wires and you don't have conduit (unless everything has gone wireless, but I doubt that).

However, you should really think about what kind of conduit you plan to use. After 40 years, things tend to rotten, and if you have cheap conduit it might not last that long. And while installing it, you should make it the simplest task to upgrade all the cables. You still have to do that one day...

And the cables you want to run really depend on what you use them for. But if you know you don't really need fiber now, you most probably don't need it after 5 or 10 years. Go with the cat5e. If you notice you need fiber after 10 years, fine, rewire your house, it will be easy because you used good conduits, and fiber will probably cost next to nothing after 10 years.
