I'd understand if people were upset about Microsoft blocking Expedia or something useful from other browsers. But I could care less if they block MSN.com from other browsers. The site is a useless ad-portal. Mostly its there for the homepage for IE. So does it really matter if its blocked? Yes I understand the openness of the web issue and I'm afraid of what MS plans with passport and other silly proprietary technologies and yes I use Mozilla and Linux, but I think people are jumping the gun on this one. Who cares about MSN? Microsoft.

  2. this is not the solution on Can Developers Work in a 'Locked-Down' Environment? · · Score: 1

There are a number of development tools that are free for instance that may write to the registry. Secondly, windows has some architectural flaws that require administrative access to do many common functions. Any developer running IIS on his box will require adminstrative level access.

Why ban linux? The liscense is that its free (basically as in beer and as in liberty) and secondly it cuts costs.

I think you should re-evaluate what you're really trying to do. If liscense compliance is your goal then I don't think this is your solution. This really will thwart your developers, especially VBers who are constantly registering and unregistering controls, etc and web developers who need to test on their box.

Perhaps you should go the other way and use linux for your developers and servers. If you standardize on free software, you can be virtually assured of liscense compliance. Obviously this will only work if you're commited to the web.

And I AM being forced to use hotmail. I signed up for it about a year before microsoft bought it. At the time it was great. Since then its always having glitches, problems, etc. Moreover, if I just stop using it, I'll miss emails that I may not want to miss. There is no way to issue a change of adress order like the post office, and its difficult to have everyone who might mail you mail you elsewhere. Loosing an email address is NOT easy.

What I think is interesting is if you look at the interests. This looks like it will come down to pragmatics. Disney is strictly a media producer, supporting this doesn't hurt their interests in any way. AOL/Time Warner is both a media producer and for lack of a better term equipment maker. So that means they would "get" to go replace millions of cable boxes. Furthermore, they could be made liable for inadequate/outdated copy protection in the future. They might figure that HBO would get less subscriptions if no one could record the movies. So when you look at it this makes sense, those who carry the burden (AOL-TW) versus those who think they have nothing but to gain from it (Disney, News Corp, et al). Divide it cleanly along the lines of those who sell just media and those who have infrastructure/equipment.

Furthermore, RedHat does not support "upgrading" from a Ximian (bka HelixCode) gnome distribution, and with 7.1 at least this failed -- so if you use the much better Ximian distro of gnome as opposed to RedHat's you might want to wait till they have made it 7.2-ready.

I think you'd need to adapt this. If you create an iterative process where release dates dictate the last go for a given design release (which hence is implemented while other parties can continue working on the next phase of the design if they choose). The problem is that you cant just have sweeping philosophical discussions while no development goes on. You need objectives, milestones and goals. Not to say that you can't have a conversative process for developing even those but there needs to be a point where even if its not perfect, work starts, nail it more in the next iteration.

The drivers are maintained by a third party whose site is not always up. Apparantly the guy had to pay for the privilege. (http://www.komacke.com/distribution.html). So while I'm happy with it for the cost and what it does (especially considering its > 2 years old), I think I'll be looking for more standard stuff when I upgrade.

As for range on this: I can go upstairs but it only works on half of the upstairs. I can generally travel downstairs anywhere I want. The laptop version has a shorter range unless you replace the silly nub antenna.
