  2. Admin rights to your own machine. on Do Your Developers Have Local Admin Rights? · · Score: 1

I've been a software developer / consultant over 20 years.
With each installation we are given full access to our own pc/workstation and have full admin rights to development servers for the project. If production support is required, we are also given access to production systems as well, but this is more of an exception than the rule.

I recently finished a lengthy assignment with Union Pacific. There are many spart people there - but their security policies regarding developers is something from a TSA screener.

    1. Developers do not have admin access to their own workstations even if they are required to design and test windows services.
    2. Developers cannot perform any task which requires Admin privs on their own machine.
    3. VMWare instances of XP and Windows Server are allocated and developers are given Admin rights to these machines, however the VM infrastructure is so overloaded - login can take 10 minutes or more ( in the DEV environment).

So - to answer your question - Admin rights NOT being given to developers is the exception. Only in large companies with paranoid and strict policies will you find this to be the case.

Sadly - the economy is driving some to engage in some unethical behavior.

Just last month - i was shown a job posting derived from Dice - and the agency quoted me a rate which was acceptable.
I go for the interview ( driving 480 miles ) and they call me to say there has been a restatement ( BDO ? )
The rate is now $15 less per hour.

I objected and decided to sell the job. At no time did I accept their posting.

The customer called and wanted my services - but the agency felt they could have a larger margin since the economy was bad.

They suck and I'm working - though not at the preferred assignment.

I think any cellular company is better than this whore.

  8. Satellite vs. Cable on Cable TV Versus Satellite TV? · · Score: 1

Do you ever have real bad weather - such as REAL heavy rain, REAL hard wind ? If so you will experience small outages with Sat-TV.

I've used both - and I quit Dish because they were always calling me to sell crap even though I'm on the no-call list.

Just like wireless internet vs. dsl and wireless microphones vs. cable microphones - a hard line beats all the others in quality and speed ( but not convenience ).

I have comcast with internet service - a real bargain and very reliable so far ( 3 months ).

I'm a former DSL user who got tired of Earthlink's crap - not a very good service.

Comcast offers the best of both worlds - and will be rolling out HDTV very soon - tho I won't have a receiver to match that for at least a year.

Also - Sat TV has brief outages when their orbits traverse the solar ecliptic a few times a year.

  11. Re:They should remain blocked on Broadband Crackdown · · Score: 1

The anon-coward who thinks he's better than every one else is one of the reasons why tech support and over IT competence is lagging these days. I suffered under ATT for almost two years. Besides the tech support personnel who do not have a clue - their network was very unreliable. My ip address would arbitrariliy be allocated to someone else. The network would be down for no reason - and when I called their tech support - their guys wanted me to remove my ethernet card and then re-install. ( This happened to my dentist 6 days ago.) To add insult to injury I received a call from sone arrogant bitch who informed me I had 24 hours to shutdown my "server". There were times the service would be down for 6 days at a time - and they still did not have a clue. I had to fight to receive a $6 credit. After the third "offense" and receiving notification of their rate increase - I gladly ripped that piece of crap out of my network and turned it in. I switched to slower but far more reliable DSL - and I'm glad I did. As we can all see - the Titanic vessel of ATT Broadband is sinking quickly - and hoping for buyer of all the infrastructure they have installed. ATT has cut costs by hiring non-qualified managers and technical personnel - then they wonder why their customers complain and leave. Good luck Mr. Armstrong - you and your team continue to play the game of circle jerk with the board - one day you will wake up and realize how you have alienated your customers - from credit card - to phone service - to wireless - to long distance - cable tv - and now internet service. Wow - you have hit for the cycle !!!
