Why? Our planet cannot provide for us forever. Unfortunately, we as humans, have not yet begun to learn to live in a balanced fashion on our own planet. We consume massive resources. Resources that we could stop stripping the planet of. Many of those resources are in the asteroid belt. One moderately sized nickel iron asteroid could tide our metal needs over for many years to come. It would allow us to stop damaging the planet and use what is essentially solar system trash. Think of it as recycling on a macro scale.
It would give us the extra time we need to learn to live in a balanced state with our planet before we move off of it.
I hope that we as a species do move off planet and eventually out of the solar system. If we don't then we die. Eventually. All of us. All of our history, our hopes, our dreams, our desires, our knowledge will be snuffed out if we don't. Our sun won't live forever. I know I won't live to see it die and neither will anyone else; but it WILL die. That is my answer to your question.
Actually, from a historical viewpoint, this is about the time that America would need to start extending the "Pax Americanus" to the world. People complained about American imperialism in the past, but now we have examples of the Empire truly forming:
A ministry of Homeland Defense. (How soon before they are allowed to search your home because someone phoned in a tip? Not long if Ashcroft gets his way.)
A war without forseeable end. (There can only be war betweeen states, not a state and an individual. Not that OBL doesn't deserve it.)
Anyone reminded of certain Roman elements?
The Legions and guardsmen, loyal only to the generals and emperors; and the unending conflict on Rome's borders that drained resources and eventually split the empire?
Sad, but look at Dynamix's History

I don't like the fact that Dynamics is going out of business but if you look at Sierra's history with the company it really is no suprise.
Example:
Sierra buys Dynamics, the Red Baron series, (one of the first games to use 3d cards) is cancelled for lack of support and staffing is shuffled or cut.
Starsiege comes out, finally breaking out of the hideous Earthsiege series. It's an average game but shows great potential. Before it hits the shelves most of the Starsiege team is rolled into the Tribes team or laid off.
Let's face it, Sierra cares about Racing sims and Half-Life. I realize they have thei place but the company isn't known for innovation.

Is Georgie boy going a wee bit nuts again? Anyone remember the Battlestar Galactica episode?
Probably not.
If you view ANH as it was intended, as a love letter to Akira Korosawa, (Watch the Hidden Fortress.) then you will see the many parallels between the two films, (and Willow too for that matter.)This includes characters and scenes.
As to the naming thing, just rememeber that if you go by statements in ANH, (e.g., "General Kenobi, hero of the Clone Wars",) you will see the next two movies are the clone wars period. The second movie is the beginning, the third the end of the wars and the fall of the Jedi.
Aside from that, who cares about the title when there are supposed to be scenes of up to 30-40 Jedi fighting?

Just observations.
