A couple of choice bits from the Slashdot post and TFA:
"Most quantum computers have to be isolated from the outside world (look at them and they stop working)"
"that can carry out 64,000 calculations simultaneously (in parallel "universes"), thanks to a new technique which rethinks the already-uncanny world of quantum computing. But the academic world is taking a wait-and-see approach"
I think I'll take a "wait and see" approach as well....anybody else smell bullshit?
To truly conceal your feelings or intent is extremely difficult, the only possible advantage you might have is that people wont see it because the "don't want to", or just aren't looking for it.
Maybe, for a day or two, you could pull it off, but every day....day-in...day-out...having to pretend that you're happy and everything is fine...the stress of even attempting to do so could be what sends some people over the edge.
A few years back, I went back to my home stomping grounds to settle the estate of me recently deceased mother. One of the things I had to do was market and sell her home. We got a family friend, who owned a realty in on it. Turns out, a high school classmate of mine was working for him - one of the "jocks". This guy had girls dripping off of him back in the day. These days, however, he's middle aged, bald, and hoping to eventually get his realtor license so he can sell homes too. He asked me if I made the last high school reunion. I told him I hardly get back to this area anymore and had, in fact, just gotten back from Malaysia where I was overseeing structural mods to a fleet of Boeing 767s for Malaysia Airlines. Oh, and the "Hard Rock Cafe" in Kuala Lampur was pretty cool.
I suppose I could have gloated, but I kinda felt sorry for him.
It is generally considered OK to intepret a statement based upon it's context.
C'mon guys, did anyone here really...really...REALLY think that Purdue was claiming to have broken the laws of Thermodynamics?
I'm not picking on this particular thread mind you. Several people posted variations of this statement....and...it's annoying. It's not necessary to pick apart every minor error.
Remember, this is "News for Nerds", not "News for Geeks and Dweebs".
One of my biggest inspirations growing up was the NASA of the 60's and 70's. Back then, NASA had a blank check and could not only afford the best of the best, but could also give them whatever they needed to accomplish whatever they had to. I remember Apollo 13....engineers with slide-rules frantically trying to figure out how to get those three guys back down. I was young and, in my mind, there was no question they would figure it out.
I don't think those "seat-of-the-pants, just solve the damn problem" scientist work at NASA anymore....or, at least, they are not allowed to function that way anymore....no, those scientist are all working for the private firms run by some guy with a big enough pair to actually do pioneering work in commercial space flight.
I want those scientist getting more access to space exploration....and, in the absence of a cold war, this might just be how we do that these days.
I mean, I wouldn't recommend giving someone "the finger"....and it does take several weeks for that Sharpie smiley-face you drew on your ass to finally wear off.
not that I speak from personal experience or anything.
since it was posted anonymously...but "named names" as it were, could Slashdot be liable? That is, is a blog responsible for some validation of the post that it allows?
Not to stir up contraversy, but it seems a valid question.
I've been struggling to find ways to be effective where I currently work and, in an effort to do so, I've struck up relationships with people who seem to be doing well and started keeping a journal of observations. The only rule is "be honest, but don't whine".
It's been helpful, mostly because it has enabled me to thread together events in time that I might not have otherwise seen if I wasn't keeping track. My effectiveness has been improving...but it is also becoming more and more apparant that this is one of the most disfuntional organization I've ever worked for.
On the plus side, I've picked up some useful skills on how to function in a dis-organized environment and learned some new FEA software along the way. All very useful things to bring to my next gig.
Keeping an objective journal (not a "shit-list") is a good idea.
Most state have employment that is "at will" so, I unless there are some details we are unaware of, I can't imagine they would have a case. Then again, talking to a lawyer is probably not a bad idea.
As far as "non-legal" advice is concerned. I'd say that you should "stay professional". Be polite, be nice, keep everything "above board" and document everything you can. In the unlikely event it does got to trial, it just increases the odds that a jury will "like you better".
I can't say I was ever threatened to be sued over leaving, however, I was once told by the quality control guy at a place I worked at the [un-named company] maintained a stable of prostitutes for "entertaining" customers. He offered me the...uhhh...."on-going services" of one of them if I would re-consider.
I know what you are thinking but, when that happens in reality, it's more creepy than anything else.
I seem to recall that, at one point, Germany had Great Britan completely cut off from incoming supplies. All they needed to do was maintain the siege and Britan would have fallen. The story, as I understand it, was that Hitler wanted to show Germany's air superiority so, against the advice of his staff (including Goering [sp?]), he sent in his Stutka's to take London. Problem is, they were no match for the British Spitfire - which could outfly and outdive the Stutka. By shifting Germany's resources to a tactical campaign where he was outmatched, Britan was able to eventually break the siege.
As I've been told, this decision may have been the difference between Britans fall and eventual victory.
Then again, historical stories are just stories and I'm not an expert in WWII history. Perhaps someone who is could fill in the blanks?
I firmly believe there is the potential for greatness in all of us so, the list of people I truly admire is fairly small. Rev. King is one of the very few people on that list. So, intrigued by your article, I went ahead and read it. He makes some strong accusations but, they are unqualified. While that doesn't necessarily mean they are incorrect, that article is insufficient to act as a reference. Furthermore, it contains this statement:
"Hoover even had a personal vendetta against King. Of King's alleged unfaithfulness to his wife, Hoover said, "This is positively nauseating coming from a degenerate like King." However, to say that Hoover's statement about King is hypocritical is an understatement. After all, Hoover's biographers have divulged that the late paranoid FBI director secretly wore wigs and dresses and even covertly bore the name "Mary." "
As it happens, I have come across some information on that (can't recall the reference, but you might try snopes.com). In any event, a pretty compelling argument can be made that the story of Hoover being a cross-dresser was nothing more than an attempt to attack his credibility. Note this has nothing to do with my personal opinion of him, only that the argument made is pretty compelling. Today, I don't think the attack would be as powerful since, as I understand it, being a cross-dresser does not preclude you from a secret or top-secret rating (at one time the rationale was that this is something that could be used to coerce you into reveiling sensitive data).
Anyway, seeing that paragraph - which I know to be challenged - in his article makes me realize that the whole thing needs to be validated...it may be true, but it falls under the heading of "don't believe everything you read".
Easy.....investors. As someone else once said, "There's a sucker born every minute"

Instead of jail time or community service, sentance them to 1 hour per 100 e-mails in a federal automated PMITA machine?
Ya know, it would have stocks and some sort of reciprocating er...machinery
or....maybe not

Brilliant!!!
It is tempting to add more and more features and functionality over time. Ultimatly, you risk getting consumed by "entropy".
KDE and Gnome developers also....lest XFCE surprise them both over time.
We probably look like a cosmic trailer-park to them.

With, er, twin parachute recovery system...I bet it turns a profit :)

I read your linked article

I did a google search on "miserable failure" and I got back links describing the "anti-googlebomb" algorithm and president Bush.
So...did it work or not?
Besides his computer savvy, he's the only known slashdotter to actually have a sex life.
