Your question is a bit like: "So I keep reading about those 'automotive' thingies, and I wonder which one to buy: a 747, a Suzuki motorbine or a cruiseliner?"
The price *is* lower, of course. Otherwise why would anyone bother ? The whole point is to make cattle bigger and meatier quicker, so you can sell more cow more quickly.
The price would be marginally lower. The quality would be significantly lesser. The health might be at risk.
In the end, we, european consumers and citizens, would'nt get anything from this crap. We have nothing to gain, a lot to lose. A lot being, our health.
There is some evidence - which is pretty weak - that the hormones used may be slightly carcinogenic.
In 1982, there was weak evidence that AIDS was contagious, and most scientists actually believed that the death rate was a few %. See what happens now.
EU trade policy is all about protecting European farmers, and has nothing to do with European consumers.
There's a limited amount of truth here. Actually, EU would rather import the limited amount of american beef than with deal with the sanctions. HOWEVER, if they were to accept it, europeans consumer would buy LESS beef, and not just LESS american beef.
As the previosu poster said, the US negotiators offered to label the meat as treated. The point is not to protect consumers, but to prevent cheaper imports from competing with subsidised farmers.
That's just blatant affirmation with no basis in reality. It is impossible for the EU to allow hormons in European produced beef, as it would scare customers away and people would overturn govt's on this. This is a pressing issue in Europe, remember, we already have BSE to deal with. What you don't understand: Americans don't give a fuck about the quality of their food. Look at all the fat bastards in your demographics. Obesity is the #1 health problem in the US, or close enough. THAT IS NOT THE CASE HERE.
Regarding the US beef issue, you got it wrong. The US offered to mark all their hormone treated meat as such, and through that giving European consumers a choice to buy it or not. The European Union OTOH didn't want to give their people any choice, hence the quarrel.
Funny, I keep reading the opposite in French newspapers. The EU has offered to accept American beef it was guaranteed to be grown w/o hormons.
On top of that, american beef certified as homron free was still on sale here -- until the DGCCRF (= French for FDA) found that most of it actually was hormon treated, the importers had just lied!!!
Move the IETF to a safer land. I mean, symbolically, let all the american members (probably most of it!) resign and name foreigners instead who will hold meeting somewhere else. Just so that 'they' get the message.
You can use a search engine without registering. IF you register, you know that you have. The site might also have a nice privacy clause, which isn't much but still better than a rogue trojan installed without you being informed of it.
You don't think it's going to happen, well that's nice of you, however, everything's available for them for it to happen. Tell me, how would you feel if your girlfriend were to see your click trail... for example: http://www.lolitasluts.com/members/14yo/rape/cute_ little_blonde_anal1.jpg http://www.lolitasluts.com/members/14yo/rape/nice_ little_redhead_and_santaclaus_69.jpg http://www.lolitasluts.com/members/zoo/schoolgirl/ cheerleader_horse1.jpg ...
Quake 3 sending my GL_RENDERER string? *shrug* Mr Comet Cursor thingy senging a list of websites I visit that use the cursor (considering I've seen that cursor maybe once - EVER)? *shrug*
Quake3's GL_RENDERER is a non-issue. They don't know more about you by getting this information -- they just know what video card and driver you are using and that's all.
However the cursor thing is a different matter. Why? Well they say that they have 60,000 sites using it. Imagine the following scenario:
One of the site is, for example, a public web board where you happened to post, anonymously, you believed, about something scandalous company X did.
Another site is a gay porn site where you enjoy watching tough black boy fucking skinny pale geek looking teenagers.
Another site is a business orientated thingie where you left your address to get their nice information leaflet.
And now... data mine that (really, it's just a simple table join!), et voilà! Company X has all the information it needs to happily black mail you.
(Someone knocks at your door, some day as the night just fell, 2 men dressed in black and wearing shades and bicolor shoes smile at you as you open your door)
Mr. Smith? We have some serious matter we would like to discuss with you. How would you feel... about your mother and employer knowing about your, ahem, personal fetishes? You know... the kind of things they display on bighugewilly.com. Not really good, that's right. So what about abandoning this lawsuit against company X you were talking about? Yeah we would be both veeeery happy. Have a nice night, Mr Smith.
(They turn around and you close the door as your knee start feel weak)
I connect usually through my company's NAT router, then thru my ISP's proxy. This means that 10000 of people may connect through the same IP address. Ok, so very few of them use Mozilla/4.7 [en] (X11; I; Linux 2.2.13 i686), but still, it's not totally obvious. Also, virtually every AOL user browses the Web through AOL's proxy... that means millions of web users are multiplexed through one (or a handful) of addresses.
From what I understand, this silly cursor is just a Trojan horse aimed at user's privacy. What would be the point of the company otherwise? Their business is just based on this invasion of privacy. And BTW, their claim that they can't link to a single user is ridiculous: it just takes one filled up form asking for your email address in any of the 60'000 using, et voilà! you are tracked, welcome to big brother!!!
Any web developer can undertand that. It's so fucking simple to do, just the fact that they claim it 'impossible' is an insult.
http://www.oneofthesites.com/subscribe.cgi?email=c mdrtaco%40slashdot.org SELECT id FROM bigbrother where email like 'cmdrtaco@slashdot.org' IF DEFINED(id) THEN INSERT INTO bigbrother (email,sexual_orientation, age, crimescommitted, numberofpornbannerclickthrough, hasreceivednicescientologyleaflet) VALUES ( -- edited for brievety ELSE IF sexual_orientation = 'perverthomo' THEN send_blackmail_asking_for_money() ENDIF ENDIF
and we don't want them, and we have better privacy than in the US, although not perfect. You gun laws are idiotic, but I don't expect you to realize it. Anyway.... here the law makes it mandatory for companies who collect personal data to:
have a good reason to do it
inform the customers WHEN they collect the data
allow them to opt out from the beginning
allow them to change the information as they wish
allow them to ask for what information is stored about them
inform the customers of their rights
inform the commission (CNIL) of any new database with personal information
Now, the problem is, the CNIL's power has kept diminishing over the years. Still, they're getting some press lately that might help publicize the issues
Boycott products of any International company that buys this information, or any company profitting from this
Libertarian myth: no law is needed, since customer can 'vote with their feet' and boycott products that they oppose.
The reality: it's IMPOSSIBLE to know everything a company is doing. How do you plan on figuring WHO buys this data? What if this data is bought by a marketing consulting agency, which then in turn works for some ad agency, which then in turn works for <insert big consumer product company>? How do you know?
It is impossible!!!
The free market economy is based on the principles that the consumer is intelligent and knowledgeable.
By spreading these lies and absurd paranoid ramblings, you're hurting the free software movement. Think about those people who came to slashdot to learn more about Linux and free software; they will read articles like yours and think:
and it's to gain them in the end, just like MS does, so don't tell me that just cause they make it open source makes it all better
BECAUSE IT'S OPEN SOURCE IT MAKES IT ALL BETTER. Are you insane???? It's truly open source, THEREFORE, if they act in a way that people don't like, ANYBODY can fork the tree and drag it in the direction they wish. THAT IS THE FUCKING POINT OF OPEN SOURCE, CRETIN!!!!
I can't believe people can be THAT stupid and paranoid!!!!
MODERATE ME DOWN IF YOU WANT, I'M SORRY I CAN'T KEEP MY COOL WHEN I READ SUCH IDIOCY.
I can't believe how people can say such crap. HEEeee--llooo??? THIS IS OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE. You don't like what AOL/RedHat/Whoever is doing? FORK THE TREE!!! Oh but you don't have the skills to do it? SO STOP COMPLAINING. Nobody owes you anything. I'M SORRY, I CAN'T BEAR THAT ANYMORE!!! This is cracking ME UP!!! Hey fucking loser! GET A FUCKIN' CLUE!!! And on top of that it got a +1 moderation!!!! DAMN IT!!!
(Where's the grit boy when you need it?) Originally, Alpha meant not feature complete, but most features are there, while beta meant feature complete, but still too buggy. And then 1.0 means "There's no bug I swear, really, honestly, it's fucking stable! And BTW... no liability etc..."
Well what about the projects putting an icon "SUPPORT ME!" linking to the repository's site with an ID, hop, send you credit card number, or even better, for small amounts, group your billing, etc... and the org/company takes care of sending you the certificate.
It's not of course not what you usually call shareware that's what I title this 'Open Source ShareWare' -- which is as obvious as you can be. 'FreeShareWare' does'nt work too well.
Also, it's fine and dandy to ask people for money, but if you don't give them a way to do it easily, and if they don't have much incentive... it's not likely to happen. Or it will happen 10 times less.
I wanted to emphasize the fact that people are used to 'own' things, even if it's a postcard size certificate , it's better than an electronic notification, what do you think? Even just a sticker.
So let's start a website that would sell just this, stickers saying 'I support GnomeSucker' or 'I 0wN KDEKoffeeMachine'.
I know, Copyleft helps support free software, but it's kinda hard to sell k3wl 3733+ T-Shirts to one's PHB...
Nobody seems to do that, though it seems to be a rather straightforward: what about releasing a software under the GPL, for example, and ask the users for money? "If you like this program, please send $10 to xxxx to help advance its development"
You can then send them a nice certificate, or license or whatever that your PHB can be proud of. Hey, you don't have to tell him you could have had it for free!
Also, I remember, back when I was using a MAc, there was that thingie called Kagi shareware, where you could really easily pay for the shareware. Why not do the same for open source? I've heard about source-xchange, but that's slightly different in concept, though it MIGHT be a better even more elegant, I believe that selling (bogus) certificates or packages would appeal more to people / phbs used to closed software.
rm ~/.netscape/lock seem a familar command to anyone?
Oddly, in 4.7, you don't have to, it checks to see if the pid is defunct before asking. It does ask for example if you launch it twice.

During a demonstration of the dog here at CNET, we found ourselves involuntarily talking to the robot like we would to a real dog
Last time I checked, talking to a robot isn't anymore retarded than talking to a pet. It's actually equally fscking retarded.
