Wow. I still stand by my comment, as this is not that common in the US, but the article disturbed me quite a lot. Unfortunately, with freedom comes responsibility on both sides of the picket line. The police have few options to remove protestors who do not comply with commands, but using cotton balls to rub pepper spray is torture by an standard. At the same time, protestors have to realize that freedom of speech and assembly does not give them the right to criminal trespassing, and that when they break the law the officers have a right to issue commands. Kind of a thorny issue.
Is it more humane to tranquilize the protestors? While on the injecting people crosses a huge line, that seems more humanitarian than torture.
A well planned protest should leave officers a way of defusing the situation. Otherwise the escalation is just as much the fault of the protestors as the police. Unfortunately, one of the most powerful protest tools, used by groups ranging from the followers of Martin Luther King to current day Palestinians, is media broadcasts of police brutality. And as long as that is effective, protestors will force police into difficult situations. That being said I believe there there is always a way to defuse the situation painlessly.
Let's not even joke about that. In many other countries (allegedly in China, for instance), government sanctioned torture still exists. IMHO, we should be happy that most of the readers of/. reside in countries where the paradigm is such that we can rightfully complain that video identification is a human rights violation, as opposed to fearing for our physical well being.
What makes this different from the FIRST code red worm? You want to create something that is just as infectuous. However much bandwidth Code Red 1 chewed, this would chew just as much. Granted, code red didn't take up all that much, but we have to think of ALL of the consequences of releasing a worm just because WE think it is a good idea.
The real problem I see is that Lucas waited too long before making his prequels. Compare the robots in TPM to the ones in the second trilogy - the weapons too. Unless he comes up with a plausible reason in Episode 3 ("Me and my Wookie") for the technology to have devolved...
here is how he said he did it... Before we complain about borders not lining up, someone who understands this should give us a fair evaluation of his methodology
okay, wasn't a perfect example, but the real problem IS that the british promised Palestine to both the Palestinians and the Jews. So though the Jews were given the land, the Palestinians have a right to be pissed.
Hey Coward - I thought you needed parental permission to get internet accounts if you are under 13...

Yes - as part of the intellectual elite, I feel that we shoult keep competitions of this nature to the top 1% of the academic world, and not share with anyone who we deem to be culturally and intellectually inferior to us. After all, if someone spent a year building a BattleBot in his basement with his son, it's absolutely useless if he doesn't have the knowledge to put A.I. in it. The purpose of events like this is to share the ideas and knowledge. True, these shows glam it up with crazy announcers, but that's just like coating some bitter tasting medicine.
The average American wouldn't want to watch this stuff if it was billed as academic, but if they are tricked into actually enjoying it, the field gets more attention.
Does anyone else remember a BBS Door game called Cyber Arena? It was HIGHLY interactive, with a Sim-City layout. Each person had a huge map and could invade other people's cities...
"For the palestinians, there could be peace with the israelis alive. Sure, I bet some palestinians would be harassed, even if they are innocent of crimes (though I'm not sure there are any like that). Yet the palestinians never hesitate to take action that leads to their primary goal, which is the genocide of the israelis and other jewish people. Doesn't that say something to you?"
Making generalities about people is exactly the problem here... I have met plenty of Palestinians who don't want to kill the Israelis, and plenty of Israelis who don't want to kill the Palestinians.
Okay - I'm done. No more political crap from me;-)
Oh, I don't know...
It's more like Taco is renting from Joe, who told him that he would be selling him the apartment. Meanwhile Joe promises the apartment to his cousin Frank, evicts Taco and gives it to Frank. Now Taco keeps coming back and leaving piles of burning shit on Frank's doorstep, and trying to sleep in his kitchen. At which point Frank starts beating him with a baseball bat.
Neither side can claim that they are being mature about this, but the problem is that Joe is an ass, and was never held responsible for tooling them both around...
I like the new layout. Much less cluttered than the old one. I'm having some trouble with the new navigation scheme, though.... where did all of my preferences go?

the two numbers aren't necesarily irrational though.... say diameter = 2, then circumference = 2(pi). and pi=pi. so as long as pi is irrational, 2 (pi) is irrational. as long as pi is rational, 2 (pi) is rational. So this doesn't really tell us much.... except we know that pi is irrational =P
yup - a whole shit load of shareware products these days come with Gator and Offer Companion. Both of them are useless, annoying little things that sit in your systray.
Okay... I really know very little about this kind of math. But it seems to me that we are talking about an irrational number with infinite digits. Just keeping with base ten for a second, does that mean that there are the exact same number of 1s, 2s, 3s, etc. (strings of length one)?

A little Aeron Chair humor for everyone... it goes on for about of week of comics...
Well, reading this it turns out I was wrong. It's no longer annoying and useless; It's annoying and possibly illegal...
....to brighten everyone's day.
How does Norton's LiveUpdate differ from this?
