  1. Re:More reason to boycott films in theatres... on One DVD To Rule Them All · · Score: 1

Right. Let's all get ripped of by MPAA's money extortion schemes sitting nicely in our homes instead. Wee! Hypocritical things are fun!

  2. Genre Merge on The Future of MMORPGs · · Score: 1

Judging by the posts here, I can see that not much of the slashdot crowd really likes the current generation of online games. I agree anyhow, as every single new MMORPG is just Everquest in a different world. It's boring, anyone can see this.

There is one place left to go for it, and that lies in Player-Vs-Player combat. The problem with Everquest is that after you get to a certain level in the game, there is no where left to go, no motive to keep playing. What's left? It needs to be be PVP.

More and more games are going to have to get away from this idea that people will want to play forever to kill monsters. AI will never have the thrill of being able to know that you just did something to another guy sitting at his computer somewhere, it will never be able to call up your buddy and go on about the kill, and it will most definitely will never get the real players to be respected.

What we need is to merge the genre of MMORPG with the FPS genre, not to make it totally the same, but to have an eternal quake game that keeps your statistics and items is just what we need (not to mention want). We need dynamic leveling, where if a mage wants to be a mage he customizes all his statistics by working on only the things he needs to. Seperate HP, Mana and endurance from levels. Most of all, put the players more in control, so they control the world.

People are going to realise that fighting monsters is not what an online community is about. People need people, if only to kill.

(As a note, the thing that has been the thing that has kept Meridian 59 alive and kicking with its 7 year old doom-looking graphics is the mechanics of PVP. It still has the most loyal fanbase in the world)

Actually, you are quite wrong in your thinking. The appeal of this game is that it you get to control people. People have wanted to control people for as long as culture, I have no surprise that they want it in their videogames.

God would certainly be fun to play, especially if it has no conciquences to anything but a few electrons.

You want an unbelievable amount of connectors? Hercules did it about a year ago. It has 2 line in connectors + microphone, 6.1 channel audio supported, external rack, optical in and out, coaxial in and out, midi in and out, and to top it all off its external box is a 4 port USB hub.

The point of slashdot is hardly the story, but merely other views towards them, and "slashdot geek" should know that.

I'd really have to disagree with this, I think the reason that the public doesn't know anything about the space missions now is because it isn't thrown in there face at all. Nobody advertises anything with space, unless its as some stupid joke. Getting a little publicity during the superbowl could really make people go "wow, I forgot about that".

10 bucks a month for endless replay value is not what I consider a nominal fee. Not to say that most new MMORPGs (everquest) don't suck though, because they do.

Futurama would be a better license?

You could pick up and deliver packages all over space, and of course stop off at any planet you want. It certainly would make a lot more sense then picking up and dropping people off in the Springfield (as far as I know there hasn't been any taxi-like situations in the show at all), whereas futurama, the entire show is about making deliveries. I would also think that it would be a lot cheaper, since almost everything in Futurama is made up (spaceships etc.). Oh well, just a thought.

  11. Re:Cartridges on Sbox Homemade Console · · Score: 1

Heh, not sure if this was supposed to be funny or not, but you would have to download them/burn them as roms (dumps of cartridges, stored on your computer). A custom machine that reads the cartridges for the three systems it supports would be incredibly difficult/impossible to make.

  12. On the other hand... on Windows-On-Linux Emulator Shootout · · Score: 1

I know I am going to get beaten down by most people on slashdot for this, but this has been itching at me for some time.

It seems the major concern with the average (note: average) home user has with these emulators is if they can run windows games. Instead of even trying to run windows games under linux with the use of an emulator, why don't you just run linux with VMWare in windows 2000, and have true support for all the games you want to play, while keeping whatever linux "stuff" you need. It seems that there is no reason to go to linux just to run your windows games under an emulator, it strikes me as absolutely pointless.

Don't get me wrong here, I can see that a windows emulator for linux would be useful if you are working for a corperation, or your a coder, or have some other real business or purpose with linux, but it seems all the people who just go to linux because thats what everyone is talking about, only to run their windows things are just being plain stupid.

  13. I'm wondering... on New Philips eXpanium Will Use 3" CDs · · Score: 2, Insightful

What exactly are the advantages of using these 3" cds over the normal sized ones? They hold less, cost more, may not be directly (though it seems you can get an adapter) supported by your burner and are probably a lot harder to find. I could only find one other device (those digital cameras) that really needs to use these things, so that means much less use of the extra mini cdrs around. Again, what exactly is the point?

  14. What I don't understand... on A Visual Comparison Between XP And Mandrake · · Score: 2, Insightful
These types of comparisons (reviews) for Windows XP have reallly got me confused. I have been running Windows 2000 for probably a good two years now and it seems perfect. It is extremely stable, has the old interface (believe it or not, is a plus for me) and is loaded with usefull features and things that make customizing and working with the OS fine as it can be.

The problem I am having is with all these people who say they have tried Windows 2000 and hated it for some odd reason, yet they try Windows XP and think its the thing that will save Microsoft OSs. The thing is, as far as I can tell Windows XP is Windows 2000 with:

    1. Windowblinds integrated into the OS.
    2. Product activation
    3. More MS apps integrated right into the OS
    4. The latest compatibility updates for windows 2000.

I don't understand how anyone could say XP is better than Win2k when when you get right down to it, are the same OS. Personally, I know that there is no way in hell I am going to upgrade to Windows XP. People will always whine about compatibility with Windows 2000. I never saw it as that bad, and especially now, now that they have released two service packs with all kinds of compatibility upgrades inside, it is the best Microsoft OS.

I really don't want to buy another OS, and have it turn out to be the same one I'm using. I am not paying any money so I can have a green and blue start menu. I am fine the way I am. I actually bought Windows 2000, and to tell you the truth, it was worth the $250 (Canadian) I payed for it.
