No it does not tell you this if memory serves me correctly. It's just one of those things that you learn from experience. Another thing I'm learning from experience is that sometimes the/etc/sysconfig files change in their meaning between versions. For example, when I upgraded from 8.2 to 9.0 the DHCP service statement in SuSEfirewall2 changed in it's meaning. Normaly you would say "yes" and it would open up dhcp on all interfaces. Ok yes this can be a security issue. In 9.0 however yes was changed to mean only the internal network interface. That ment that my wireless segment was broken. Very bad. I discovered the problem when I was going through the new firewall config file. There it tells you there are now three options, yes, dmz and all. "dmz" opens up your dmz segment and your internal segment. However since my config file was the older version it didn't have the appropriate comments. GRRRR..... And asking for help anywhere was a pain in the ass. I'm sure that it was a very well documented change, but I don't really have the patience to sit through ALL the upgrade docs every time I upgrade.
I've been using SuSE since about 5.1 and Yast has come one hell of a long way since then. With Yast there are basicaly three levels of adminstrability. The first is the simplest method using the Yast tool, which works the same in console gui and X-Win gui. Next is using the/etc/sysconfig scripts and then calling SuSEconfig as needed. If you look closely Yast actualy edits the files in the/etc/sysconfig directory and then calls SuSEconfig. Finaly you can turn off SuSEconfig for various programs by changing that programs sysconfig file in the/etc/sysconfig directory. Thus if you want to use your own config file for say bind you can do so without SuSEconfig writing over them.
Overall I think SuSE has struck a very good balance between gui tools, and config files.
good point.... but an F-14 is kinda like owning a 60's corvet (yes I can't spell) today. The Tomcat is definately a classic! Besides it's a two seater so you get to take others up with you, and they can pay for half of the fuel!
AMEN!!! I was wondering if any of the above posts would even notice the error.... I guess since the post does not relate to electronics the nerds of slashdot don't notice the error as readily. I'm sure if it were some NatSemi 7400 series CMOS chip misquoted the first pots would say so...
I want to know when I can own my very own F-14D. That would kick ass!
True, very true. However if you have let's say an IT budget of only $5000 and you have to get enough machines for 4 people, what then? True you can "suck it up" and purchase a machine with windows installed, but if you choose to use linux as we all know that saves you a few bucks now. Writeoffs only happen at tax time, not at startup.
Phprojekt is another good one to check out too. I've used it for a few small time projects and most people have found it relatively easy to understand. The thing I like most about Phprojekt over OpenGroupware is the install docs are much easier to understand, and for the most part it's worked straight from the tarball.
I have run into this problem a few times with my busisness. What did I end up doing? I resorted to the ultimate open source system, pen and paper. I have looked at a few packages for use as an accounting system but I seemed to always run into a problem with this and that, and when I'd try and read the documentation it sucked ass! It assumed you already knew XY and Z to get the package working when you don't really need to know them when it's finaly working. I dislike winblows as much as the next Slashdotter, but I have to say most programs in the windows einvironment install and work out of the box, and the install documentation is written at a level even a drunk person can understand.
If one decides they wish to write a letter to their representative they should also include how voting against open source software can negatively affect their campaign. If you take a look at the current job openings for say the Dean campaign you will see they are looking for people with experience using Firebird, Mozilla and many other non-Microsoft open source products. Voting against Open Source means the politician will have to spend precious dollars on software than on campaigning next time they need to be re-elected.
Remember, find ways Open Source directly effects the politician and they will be more likely to listen, or tell them how voting against it will cause people to be out of work. They hate that just as much.
What if the song you want is a special remix which isn't available in the stores? What if the album you want is from an artist who nobody sells and the label which origionaly released the song is not around anymore? Does going down to the store and shelling out $15 for a CD which cannot be purchased to support that artist hold water anymore? I feel this is the REAL tragady of P2P. Plus I live in the US, I happen to like Eurodance and other forms of music from Europe. However such music is not easy to find here especialy since CDNow was purchased by Amazon.
Everyone talks about getting their music for free and whatnot. For me P2P was all about discovering new music. When I was on Napster back in the day my CD purchasing budget was about $50-$100 a month! I was getting new songs which *I* liked, not what some marketing department wanted me to listen to. Also as I mentioned earler, what about preserving music which cannot be found leagaly? P2P makes for a great medium for this!
Damm u RIAA, Metalica and everyone else who was against P2P.
I can just see it now. You go to search for some specific topic and Amazon will return thousands of sponsored results, but not what your're looking for. Yet a simple search on Google or some other online booksellers results in many book hits. Don't belive me? Try going into their music search database. IT SUCKS ASS, and that's giving it some credit! For example have a look for the series "Club Rotation." Yes eventualy you will find hits for it, but after wading though results to the latest Britney Spears or whatever other crap they are trying to see you. Back when CDNOW was a seperate company they kicked ASS!!! Now that they are part of the Amazon collective you can't find crap! Heh... I bet a serch for crap would contain results for some top 40 album.
So what does this have to do with books? Simple, they seem to all use the same search engine. Album searches are rather straight forward, and they can't get that right. What makes them think they can get full text searching right?
As a small busisness owner myself there are a lot of potential pitfalls either way you go. On larger projects I prefer to bill by the project, this way if it takes more time than I immagined I'm not pissing off the client, however I loose out in the end, but I increase the possibility that the client will want to do more busisness with me. However on the smaller projects I bill by the hour. This is usualy because the task list from the client usualy is not complete until the job is finished, ie they don't always know everything they want done. However either way they are all charged for any materials used with a 15% surcharge. You never want to loose your shirt on materials. Time does not have a direct monitary cost, materials do, especialy when your budget might be tight.
Also when you bill you should negotiate the terms up front. If you go with net terms tell them what the penalties are for late payments.
Either way you should have some form of a contract with your client. The document should clearly state your expectations from them and their expectations of you. If you expect them to provide you with direction and vision and they don't, they might claim that you were unable to deliver because they did not provide what you were expecting them to. This happened to me once, it sucks! If you put any time deadlines in there, make sure you add to your estimate. Software design is notorious for taking longer than you first expect, after you have done many projects for clients you will get better at guestimating the time and cost.
Burning Man requires drugs eh? I happen to disagree. I don't drink and I don't do drugs, and that's by personal choice. I know many others up there who also don't do drugs or drink, and even more who just don't do drugs. Yes there are some who feel that drugs are the only way to escape, and I personaly feel sad for them, but hey that's their choice, not mine.
Also.. It seems like you are a very embittered person. Why is this? How has the event/community offended your sensabilities? Do we not all aspire to left wing fascisim? Should we denouce every group we belong to, just because everyone else is also a member?
Yes, there are MANY other things worth seeing here in the US. However no matter how you cut it, going to the event is an experience, just as going to the corporate funplex known as Disneyland is an experience.
If your gripe is about all the people who want to go and the numbers of people showing up and you don't like it, start your own event and be a radicaly exclusive person who shuts others out. I know the event is not "perfect" but I dare you to try and find an event of similar size which has managed to not be sponsored and fosters a community based on the concept, but not always practice, of giving.
All in all it's a pretty amazing thing, even if it's not your thing. After all, Burning Man IS what YOU make it!
Wow... I was working at the gate when we were forced to close it to all outbound traffic. Some people were very upset because they had to be somewhere.
I have heard a few stories/reasons for what happened, either way it's very tragic.
No... The Gate is the last vestige of the outside world at Burning Man...
And I was most specificaly refering to those who think they can experience it all by just spending some money at the event. The event is not about money, but about participation and interaction with others. Granted getting prepared and getting to the event takes money, but people who bring money to the event thinking they can buy what they need are seriously mistaken.
LOL... what is Burning Man... It's like explaining to a blind person what the color teal green is without using the colors blue and green.
However I have found one statement to be true for almost everyone you speak with in the community.
Burningman IS what you make it.
Is it a music festival? Maybe, there are a lot of neat bands out there and some really interesting musicians.
Is it a Crazy art festival with lots of nekkid people? Maybe, if you wish to be clothing optional yourself and see lots of neat art you can do that too!
It's much easier to answer what Burning Man is NOT. Burning Man is NOT a festival where you go to see nekkid people, that's what Marty Gra is for. Burning Man is NOT about buying and selling trinkits. Gifts have no price. Burning Man is NOT a place where you can just show up and hope to pay X number of dollars to get a bed, some food and watch the whole thing. We WILL laugh and make fun of you at the gate if you try this, and we have.
I've worked it for the last two years (the only year's I've been), and it's a most amazing experience. What amazes me is how true its the roots the event tries to be considering the growth it has experienced.
If you're going to go you MUST do two things, one get your ticket now! The ticket price goes higher as the burning of the man approaches. Two go to the website (www.burningman.com), read the Survival Guide and follow it like it was your bible!
DUDE!! you are so misinformed... Please forgive the harshness, however I feel very strongly.
Think of ADD as rapid focus and a need for lots of external stimuli. People with ADD tend to be happiest when there is a lot of stuff going on around them, the more extreme cases can't even sit still in these situations. Also people with ADD tend to need a shorter feedback loop than other people. Think of a quiz in school, the feedback on the quiz might be 1 hour it might be 2 weeks. To the ADD person the timeline for feedback might be 10 seconds to one hour for activities they are doing. Video games provide this feedback very quickly. Also people with ADD tend to do best in One on One situations rahter than group situations, and in situations when a lot of stuff is going on around them.
Please next time you wish to say some blanket BS like "Well so and so can concentrate for hours on a video game, they must not have ADD," do your research!

A friend of mine suggested I try one of his Rittalin pills after he was diagnosed with ADD. What happened, I ended up cleaning a bathroom for 3 hours, hell you could eat off the floor when I was done. Why is this an interesting anecdote? I could barely keep dishes clean to eat, let alone clean my bathroom. Needless to say I felt it warented research. I also ended up getting a diagnosis for Adult ADD Inatentive Subtype, in other words, I can't focus and I'm not hyperactive.
Three years later I finaly got sick and tired of the way my life was going. I could barely finish classes at school, and life just SUCKED in general. I had started and stopped treatments in the past and had mixed results. I decided to start a treatment with Adderall and stick to it. That was almost a year ago. Since then I have changed my major from CS to Medical and I have gone from a 2.0 GPA to a 3.6 with straight A's for the last two semesters.
For me treatment has worked, however there is no one treatment for everyone. I recomend you do your research, learn as much as you can about ADD. Listen to what your gut instinct is telling you, it may not be right but it probably knows the best direction for you. Lastly drug treatment is not the solution! For me it was the key that unlocked my concentration and thus made me do better in school which in turn has helped improve my mood and life outlook.
Ya know... I always find it rather ironic that when there is news about open source software and whatnot, most of the time the audio provided, if available, is closed source. Real Audio, Windows Media et al.
It would be cool if there were more open source audio streams for this kind of news...
It depends on the tree... If the tree has needles like a pine and those needles are the right length they will absolutely kill all wavelengths for which that needle is a harmonic of. I have heard of stories from RF engineers in Seattle that there have been problems with designing PCS (1900Mhz) netowrks up there because the needles on the tree are perfectly matched and absorb the signal.
Dunno... the technology available up there is pretty amazing.... 6mbit satelite pipe... many 802.11b networks (with a relatively low noise floor too!) pirate radio to your heart's content, and plya information kiosk's running freeBSD... But the best technology up there is leaving your computer behind and hanging out with a bunch of other techies and freaks and hacking what's available to make something really cool.
Funny you should ask that... The author of the Internet White Pages went to work with us one day and he was talking about how he got sent before a senate hearing regarding privacy. Apparently not very many people liked the fact that he was trauling UseNet for email addresses and names and so forth and putting them in to a data file. Anywho the senate told thim that he and another big name company (can't remember who), had to delete the databases. Well he said sure and didn't. He sold it to another company and they announced it in the press who they got it from. Well the senate was not pleased and they threatened to put him in JAIL. Apparently they have the authority to put people in jail. With this look back at history it will be interesting to see what DoubeClick will do.... I hope those bastards go to jail... I sure hate seeing DoubleClick adds on SlashDot.
When I worked for Sprint and other Clients we had mapping similar to this made using software such as Planet made by MSI. Planet was cool, it would help map out coverage for a given area. However it was still needed to go out and drive the network. I worked a project in Tijuana using some equipment made by DTI that had 8 scanners in it and would record about a thousand channels of data to be later displayed on a map. It was cool when you would look at the map and actualy see the coverage of each cell tower based on the driving that had been done.
When I worked for Sprint PCS in the San Francisco market we had a printout of the south bay coverage. It was pretty cool looking at it, however using a smoothed out version of the chunkey map would not be good for marketing as it would cause heightened expectations. It also had pretty good holes in coverage along major freeways and so forth, also not good for trying to sell a phone. It was also funky to see how the program would show coverage in the middle of the Santa Cruz mountains due to reflections, ducting, scatter and height.
