Xbox live can pull off reduced prices because the game developers due all the work developing the servers, theyere just hosting them, and even there how much content gets updated over time?
compare that to how oftem a mmorpg gets updated with new data. they keep adding more content to retain players. so $15/month is justified.
plust as said below the upfront charge is to pay for all the work they did to get to the point where users can play. its NOT an easy task. i don't here you bitcha botu forking $50 for halo and then $5/month to play it online.
They have primarily pursued the goofy desktop in a window model as well. But there is nothing in their protocol mandating this : it is merely a limitation of the current client.
doesnt the nx system really just work as a proxy for standard x communication anyway?
You forgot av software for the mac, imovie is a joke compared to the stuff you actually buy for a pc. plus the majority of systems out there come with free antivirus software. oh and mail.app is not that great, neither is ical. but then again you got enterage for macs which costs about the same anyway. also, make sure your comparing apples to apples and not oranges here. the imacs have a stripped down l2 cache i beleive, at least my ibook did. the procs we're talking about are comparable to faster celerons in most imacs, in these g5 ones theyd be comparable to mobile athalon 64s.
all that said, mac hardware is DAMN sexy, software support just lacks for MacOSX
My coworker is salaried... hes working ~60 hours a week.... when you average out his pay sallary (no including overtime) he makes less then the people who work under him.
-- Safer drug distibution (no more snake oil salemen) ridalin anyone? they really just added a middle man to the process. people dont need a good portion of the medication they take. and without insurance any medical treatment is fricken expensive.

a LOT of people ARE struggling here in this country, we may not be grovling in mud, but im hungry and poor and work 50+ hours a week.
Really, I can swear i've seen assembly in C source files. I'm defeitnly not a heavy duty coder here, so youll have to excuse me when i ask how assembly is used in the kernel and whatnot then.
I'm sorry, I'm not too familar with them but, Java and C# arnt really appropriate for OS programming are they? Or are there examples of drivers or kernels being written in these langauges. Can you do inline assembly in Java?
Why do you need special software? it seems to me that it should just work;
3) High Compatibility with PC "Hi-MD" uses the FAT file system, making it possible to use "Hi-MD" formatted MDs and 1GB "Hi-MD" discs as versatile media for recording PC data files, such as images and text. Furthermore, as portable, rewritable PC media, "Hi-MD" complies with USB format's Mass Storage Class, ensuring that simply by connecting a "Hi-MD" product to a PC it is immediately recognized as an external storage device.
even if you needed to convert to atrac, there are some utilities out there that allow you to do this easily. i think you just didnt do any investigating.
Goto jsut about any punk show, look in the bins all the small distros have. I can guarentee at least 75% of the albums are on labels that run from some guys room. If you want some examples of non RIAA labels...

Unixpunx Records (Resin Bacon)
Xaos Inc records (Entrophy, Unabombers)
Profane Existance (Doom, aus rotten, etc)
Crass records/Southern Records (Crass, etc)
Tribal War records (Aus rotten, etc)
There are dozens more, Just ask all the spikey haired freeks you see in the sity. Who knows you may find a fre punk bands you like. Your also likely to find some kindred spirits. The punk and geek philosiphies often overlap.
Dont get the distro just yet, ssh/rsync services onthe mainserver died before it was fully uploaded, hence it is incomplete, as the file "THIS IS NOT DONE UPLAODING" says. You should not have announced this yet. Please people wait a week so i can get the packages first!:)
Well all the bars are closed by then anyway. Boston is one of the "sleepiest" cities in the world, mostly cause its all college kids who drink till they pass out and usually do that by 11
How slow do you drive? I can make it up from prov to the junction of 95/93 and back down to kingston (rt 3 ext 10) in 20 minutes. Then again being one of the nuttier boston drivers probly helps. And if any of you tourist ask me to say "pahk da cah in havahd yahd" ill slap you. For a prep if you are visiting check out masshole.com i think. Knowing boston driving laws will help. What we need to do is actually raise consumer awareness. Bitching about it here on slashdot is not going to help the people who are most likely to buy this stuff.
We need to start a leaflet campaign. Because the average consumer is NOT going to get access to this because they arnt in the right circles. I wouldnt mind standing outside compusa or bestbuy handing out copies of the essay. There is nothing illegal about telling the consumers what a product does is there? and if ther is that is an even bigger problem. Also a copy of the essay should be on every libraries desk accross the nation.
How did you come to the name Slackware? DId it hit you during a long nights of smoking from the holy frop with bob? Did stang climb in your window and wisper it in your ear while you were asleep? Was it the Xists?
Here at work we're branching slackware as it is and interest has been raised in obtaining alphas to port to so we can provide ourselves with more rock solid servers even if our customers want x86 with redhat.
The reason we're actually branching slack internally is that we dont use sendmail at all. nor do we want wu-ftpd on the systems at all. With this by default inetd is turned off as is rpc and just about everything that isnt started by its own rc.blah included in its own package. I still have to work out how i could configure the host name in the various configs during setup as sed and awk arnt guarenteed to be working.
I love the package format too. Its alot easier to deal with makepkg (front end to tar) than it is to deal with.spec files and arcane rpm options.
iv ehad enough of this, and i havent even had it as bad as those kids, im out of school thank bob, but i had to put up with this kind of suspicion when i was still in highschool.
all the geeks can take a lesson from the punks and the skins, "if the kids were united they would never ever be devided", if you stand up for yourselves together, and support each other like ive seen here, but inthe real world, NO ONE, not the administration, not the clueless parents, not the police, not the man. (unfortunently for them) Unlike the punk all the geeks are pure, there is no such thing as a wanna be geek. We can all be the vanguard of a new world of enlightenment and growth intellectually, but not if remain a silent majority.
Stand Up
there are strength in both knowledge and numbers, you have both, use them, dont let them use meer physical strength work against you. Fight back with all you can, dont get yourself arrested or anything, but dont let yourself be oppressed at the same time.
I wish all the subcultures would fianlly band together, a lot are so similar its scarry, after all, the only diffrence between a punk and a geek is a pit at shows, im afraid what a culture which doesnt take out its aggressions regularly might do when it 'snaps'..........

Isn't this what printed manuals are for. if a use cant figure out how to use that then screw em.
And if theyre smart enough to download and install a distro they sure as hell are smart enough to look up some documentation ahead of time.

UHH... you still need to learn how to drive them, and still need to be liscenced(sp).
the point is computers are complex machines, unlike say, atms. you should have some sort of training, even if its self training.

I imagine if you put it on a local network itll grab an IP from dhcp and act as a nat router for any 802.11 devices connected to it.
