    It appears that thie areacodes they support is fairly slim. Unless you really WANT to have NYC number. Hey mabye the scammers will love this, only takes CC and you can project a local phone number anywhere on their network.

    So if you don't live in those areas it's useless.

    Ahhh.... but you forget how computers have perverted copyright. Evey copy your computer makes in ram and in the proxy software can be consiteered illegal distribution IF the author demands it. This is the screwed up way that software and computer copyright works. They can, as the copyright holder, make whatever demand they want about it's use.

    Nothing personal guys, but Mandrake is the worst of the bunch. This distro might work ok on your 1ghz 512mb pc, but 8.0 ran like crap on my 128mb P200mmx. And yes, I know what I'm doing, it's running at runlevel 3 ( no graphics ) with a reduced set of rpm hand selected on installation. It even screwed up the installation by never installing the /dev/ nodes. I had to use the # prompt on the install disk to rebuild the /dev before it would boot.

    Mandrake has too many bells and whistles that attempt to hide the fact you are running UNIX. Call me a hacker, but not having the standard BSD unix tools by default really annoys me to no end ( ftp, telnet, and many others were not installed without individual package selection ).

    I have been running linux since 0.9.4 in '92-'93 on at least one PC in my house, so I do know what I'm taking about.

    All of this emulating m$ makes me want to go BSD.

    I have not only been disturbed by the lack of congresional integrity when it comes to civil-liberties, but now the basking of big buisness in all the cash and exemptions they need to further maul the little guy into oblivion.

    1) One cheap fares airline has already gone under, the big aitlines are looking to get 15-20 billion dollars in cash, loans, and tax filing delays.

    2) The removal of spectrum limits would mean that the mnopoly that phone companies once had on land lines will now be easly avalilbe in the wireless market ( much more lucrative ).

    3) The sudden depresion of most markets will drive many of the little guys out of buisness.

    Please post more example too, I'de like to collect more.

  7. Funny... on Mozilla's 100,000th Bug · · Score: 1

    I just started using mozilla last week a couple od days before 0.9.4 and propmtly upgraded to 0.9.4 for the stop popups feature.

    Since I have started using it again I remember now how things should work. I use almost not cookies, I have it set to prompt and remeber so it was sorse the first day or so, but has gotten much better.

    Mozilla is a champion for privacy and security, with only one last privacy bugaboo that I feel needs fixing before I switch permematly from pine. That feature is no email should initiate network access ( HTML images, url's, css,... ) becase it;'s an easy way for the marketers to validate the address.

    Cheers to all those that have worked on the project.

    They have authority, although the authority seems a bit broad. I mean come on, how ofen is the FBI going though the phone company logs of a suspect? You don't hear slashdot complaining when at&t and version are cooperating with a legal sopena?

    But it doen underscore the need for encryption and the fact that even you ISP cannot be trusted. We need commercial security aware companies to provide SSL'ed smtp servers because even GPG/PGP does not prevent DCS1000 from figuring out who you are communicating with.

    I would love to have ALL logs an ISP keeps be encrypted with my public key, that way the govenment cannot make use of the data without my authority.

    I think he was just upset because the program works great with itself, but it almost totally incompatible with everything else on the planet.

    The program was a neat concept, but I was unable to get it working once over the past few years of playing with it. I have 100% compatible hardware for capture.

    Liability, why does avery lee still distribute one of the most popular video edditing programs under GLP still then? http://www.virtualdub.org/

    I don't understand, and I'm personally very skeptical of this excuse to stop development and pull the program.

    I'm sorry, as a long time fan of the Kevin Smith films ( including having all three of the J&SB stash signed copies of the other films ) I though this one sucked. There was too much happening, and the whole movie bordered on ego stroking for each member of the film. You could see the gags comming a mile away, and most were not funny.

    I have and continue to watch the other three movies, but this latest one was a waste of time. It lacked and decent plot development, or charm of his other films and the endless slow motion girl shots, dick and fart jokes, and re-use of old over used one lines really just got annoying.

    Go see it if you like Bluntman and Chronic "Dick and fart jokes", but if you are looking for the charm and humor from his other films just pass on this one.

    Prisons already have revolving doors... jsut take a recnet case where a double murderer will be set free ( after appeals ) becasue his confession to at least 7 members of his AA group are now consitered confidential becasue it's a religious group.

    He spoke openly at the group about having nightmares about the killings... hello... does this strike anyone else as unusally assinine.

    We can convict an employee of the crimes of his foreign company, but we cannot hold a KNOWN double murder in jail.

    Nothing bad here, mabye people will actaully start using the plugin now. This will mean that the JVM is downloaded from sun automaticly and will be up to date with the features that have been missing for the past 3 years from the browser. M$'s jvm is still based on Java 1.1, cmon we are testing Java2 1.4 at this point.

    I don't know about you geeks up north, but I take matters into my own hand. I have my own mail service that I access though SSH or zebedee depending on what firewall my employeer is using. I surf via a ssh or zebedee connection to my squid proxy server on a cablemodem.

    I applaud Canada for having some sense of what is right and what is wrong, but I'm not waiting to find out what my employer things of my e-mail or web habait, they will never see any of it. I'de hate to see what the netops think off all of the wierd traffic comming out of my box looks like.

    If all of that failed, I'de just switch back to SSH webmail client that I have installed.

    I'm not saying that this wasn't a good idea, but really what was the big deal. It was closed hardware that would be expensive to develop under, and it was in the company's best intrest to be shady about the whole thing.

    Not to mention that they had no software for it, but refused to open up the units to truly free software. I'm not a biggot, just a realist.

    I can usually find what I'm looking for either using Google or altavista. The hurestics used for google are the best I've seen in any search engine. I can ususally find stuff that is anywhere from several days to several years old.

    Come on... these are the same people that were claiming that we would all run out of IP's by now. They don't seem to realize that everything adapts.

    Would this not also mean that backup companies would be liable for both contributory and vicarious infringment. 1) They should know that users are backing up copyrighted materal 2) The are providing the site and facilities 3) they are recieving finacial gain from activities. 4) The control who can use their site and facilities As the person points out, encryption and head in the sand about what's happening is not and excuse.

    IANAL but...

    Most laws protect only the OWNER of the product against problems with the software. IE) you can't sue ticketmaster for outragious ticket prices because the stadiums are the ones paying for the service. Also you can't sue MS for damages because the OEM purchaned the software not you.

    The best you can do is organize with the parents in the community, show them how screwed up the system is. When you convince them that the software is not working then tell them that not only are they paying gobs of money for the software but the company is now profiting from your information by selling it to advertizers.

    Just don't give up.

    I can just see it now. Some pople may think this is extreme, but if they broadcast a signal they can do whatever they like to it, but it's still my right to scan, record and alter any signal being sent to me.

    Those pesky humans had no right to scan the electromagnetic spectrum for our signal, that's illegal! Those pirates will be unted down and killed!

    It does mean something...

    You have a cause that was important enough for you to set up and run this client, others have done the same. In total it's impressive and it's nice to see that they have alot of support.

    Now they should also come out with a unit of work -> time index to show how much "unit time" was used. That was the could say they have passed 100,000 hrs of PIII700 time or 90,000 of SGI time.....

    Some things to remeber when buying DVD/VCD players

    1) Confirm ( from multiple sources ) that it can use CD-R's of ANY format.

    2) Confirm that it can use CD-RW of multiple formats

    3) Make sure it can CONVERT PAL->NTSC and NTSC->PAL depending on your prefrence, not autoswitch based on the movie. Otherwise you will end up will lots of VCD that are B&W and have no vertical hold.

    So, keep those in mind when shopping. If you don't mind dropping the MP3 requiments go with Pioneer. They make a whole lot of good DVD and DVD changes in the 200-500$ US range that will play DVD, VCD's , SVCD's, and CD's. They play almost anything too, if you could only crack the region coding on DVD's :).

    DCMA is illegal in several ways.

    1) By tying access controls to "Fair Use" materal they are attempting to control piracy by controling access to the data. Although their intension were ok, the way they do this block all legitimate use of the data without designing your own decryption device. Some of the "Fair use" items consumers can no longer take advantage of without breaking parts of the DCMA.

    a) Backing up videos
    b) Using segments for lawful criticism or journalistic features
    c) Sound bites

    2) The DMCD is and end run around the materal EVER going into the public domain. Copyright is a time limited monopoly, but if this kind of legislation were to continue movies will never fall under public domain. The copyrights might expire, but with no LEGAL way to recover the data the companies still retain full control and monopoly status on the media.

    Some of the falicies that people work under is that we are living in a consumer driven society. The multinational coperations are driving our societies not us. They know exactly what to do to maximize their profits. Would CD's ever have taken off if the media companies didn't kill sales of records by refusing to buy them back. Do you think we have any control now as the media companies try to kill off "Piratable" media formats one by one. What happens when they do this next time? When DVD-RW are cheap and easy to copy.... when will it stop?

    I'm sorry.... they want develpoers to pay ( even freeware ) to get their software certified for a open platform. Seems a little iffy. How can they demand royalties for comercial games? They have an open platform right? or is it.

    What if you don't get your application certified and sell it anyways... what can they really do? Consumers rarley care if the software is certified, as long as it runs. If they don't open the certification they will loose freeware programmers in the long run.

    If you read the blurb on the page, this is totally legit. Assuming the facts are correct he has full rights to the domain. He registeded it before there were any copyrights, trademarks or service marks on the name. He is NOT attempting to sell the domain. He states that he is not affiliated with dreamworks. His intent is to critisize Dreamworks films and administartion.

    So in this case he will win, or we can kiss our domain system goodbye.

    What are you on crack. The PI should get a warrent to search the premisis if he has cause. It looks like he is trying to find cause to get a conviction.

    Stay away or you could be convicted of a felony for illegal comptuer entry if he finds out.
