The number of Apple shills defending Apple's liberal DRM on slashdot is fairly sad. I take it you don't work in education / you're not a creator / you don't own non-apple playback devices?
This is one of the telltale remaints of the BSD-derived TCP/IP stack that NT/XP uses.
I think they're actually unrelated - and I don't think Microsoft has used a bsd derived TCP/IP stack since NT4.
Although the stack itself has been heavily modified, using/etc/ as the location for the hosts file still remains, along with other little hints -- ftp.exe is almost identical to the BSD FTP utility. BSD also gets properly credited in the XP copyright notice
I'm actually pretty sure its there for the half-assed posix compliance that ealier version of NT had. (do MS even try for this in their NT server products anymore?)
I hardly ever use XP, so I'm not sure if their command line tools are BSD derived or not (they certainly used to be) - but if they are, good - far better to used free quality tools then something MS has written inhouse:-)
And what would be the result? Cheaper oil for China. Sounds like economic poison to me.
I started to formulate a response, about how China is diversifying its energy sources, and the US needing to do the same to compete, rather then be stuck, dependant on a rapidly diminishing coal & oil supply.
Then I noticed your handle (and a quick perusal of your comment history confirmed you're a troll) and decided not to bother.
The result, the researchers say, is a danger that Americans are not getting the full story on how the climate is changing.'"
You only have to read a slashdot story on Climate Change (and the amount of time posters call it "global warming" to know that the vast majority of people all over the world are not getting the full story on climate change.
I'm more worried about the current administration's failure to legislate forced change to energy (particularly oil & gas) consumption, then I am about the American public's lack of awareness of the facts.
I will now support the underdog even if Intel drops below AMD just to insure stiff competition. You can call me a young idealist about capitalism!
Hmmmmn, I think I'll actually call you someone who needs to read up a bit on both idealism and capitalism!
Also, on a somewhat note - never care about a company, because the company cannot reciprocate your feelings.
If Intel comes out with a better, cheaper processor tomorrow, don't buy the AMD one, buy the intel one. Their is no point treating a company like a person.

... I read an article in which he was quoted saying that he had a small staff that personally goes through his email.
Four million Spam a day - here's the article for ya, and a quote from it:
Unlike ordinary people though, Mr Gates doesn't get a sore finger from deleting unwanted missives. The company has a team of people dedicated to ensuring he only gets mail that he wants to read.
Look's like he'll have to find some other way to make his finger sore:-(
However, I think you're not going to have everything working perfectly, I think the video drivers will only be 2d, your remote won't work, nor will the CD eject button, etc etc etc.
If you've got a bit of money & just want ubuntu, buy hardware from a vendor who supports linux.
If you want OS X and Ubuntu, still buy hardware from a vendor who supports linux - but also wait until you can buy copies of OS X tiger that are not tied to the new macbook or iMacs & install that on your generic hardware.
which allows Intel Macs to easily and legally multi-boot. Boot Camp will be a standard feature in Mac OS X 10.5."
should read
which allows Intel Macs to easily and prettily multi-boot. Boot Camp will be a standard feature in Mac OS X 10.5."
There was nothing stopping you from legally multi-booting before.
Perhaps the submitter was getting booting-windows-on-macs with booting-os-x-on-generic-intels - but even that is perfectly legal in most jurisdictions provided you own a copy of OS X.
On a different note, I see on Apple's bootcamp page in the "what you'll need list:"
10GB free hard disk space
A bona fide installation disc for Microsoft Windows XP, Service Pack 2, Home or Professional (No multi-disc, upgrade or Media Center versions.)
WTF? 10 GB (well, I guess if the bootloader by itself is 83MB I shouldn't be surprised) and you cant use multidisc or upgrade versions (or even win2k!) I'll wait for the 'hacker' releases thanks Apple!
And on a third note - the screenshots look gorgeous! Would be nice to have grub look this nice (but grub has too much hardware to support I guess)
For this year's challenge, imagine you are an application developer for an OS vendor. You must write portable C code that will inexplicably taaaaaake a looooooong tiiiiime when compiled and run on a competitor's OS.
Potential (unintentional) Winners:
1) MS (whoops, except they don't write portable code)
2) Sun (whoops, Java's slow on all OSs)
3) Apple (whoops, see points one and two)
Its a joke! You can relax now MS / Sun / Apple fans!
Are you suggesting Union Carbide willfully gassed the people of Bhopal? Because the article you link to suggests a malicious intent by the CEO. That's a bit of a stretch from the Islamofascists who are willfully trying to kill non-believers.
OK - you're right. Calling them bio-terrorism isn't a correct. But as the powers-that-be are labelling everything they don't like as bio-terrorism, I thought I would do the same. (oh, and not all terrorists are islamic)
I'm not saying UC isn't culpable, or that the settlement shouldn't have been more substantial, but you're comparing apples and oranges.
OK - I am comparing apples & oranges - however, I wanted to highlight the fact that the major chemical and biological threat to people is from negligent or greedy corporations, not some nebulous terrorist threat
Also, how does a US$470,000,000 settlement only come to $300-500 per person unless it's spread out to 1,175,000 people and not the 50,000 mentioned in the article? Perhaps the state used/took some of the money for (I'm hoping) services and to recover their costs for assistance. Look, Bhopal was crappy and I think it has helped India step up to not be treated like a 3rd world nation, but weak analogies like your will not help bring justice.
The 50,000 you mention are those who can't work due to injuries. The settlement also had to pay for the cleanup (still imcomplete), the funerals (and family's) of the 20,000 who died, the 120,000 who suffer ailments (I could go on....)
I don't need to know you - you link to your site, where you state:
Islam is not the kindred religion of Judaism and Christianity. It is the enemy.
That does not seem like a particularly christian statement to me. Turn the other cheek & all that.
I cited a link in this discussion, showing that the terms microevolution and macroevolution were coined by a biologist and not a creationist. You may disagree with Filipchenko, but many do not.
Thanks for that link! I'll give you a quote from it:
There is no difference between micro- and macroevolution except that genes between species usually diverge, while genes within species usually combine.
It's not a particularly big deal that these terms were coined by a biologist - they describe aspects of evolution. Just like like macro & micro economics describe aspects of economics without conflicting economic theory overall.
most Christians are perfectly reasonable and logical people.
Indeed - but a small minority of them (people like you) give the rest a bad name.
Also, there is nothing in microevolution that conflicts biblical belief.
As there is no difference between microevolution & evolution, I'm going to modify your statement to:
Also, there is nothing in evolution that conflicts biblical belief.
And *shrug* I guess I agree with that too - if you can believe the tales of the ascension and gravity at the same time, then genesis & evolution should pose no problem either.
so liberal that you never notice it's there

Sorry, it's either a sexy calender or a Drew Barrymore calender - can't be both.
Everyone - don't forget that WiFi is a Basic Human Right
Politicians hey? They're sooooo cute!
*heh*
That is one of the funniest things I have ever seen!
This is truly a week of firsts.

It most certainly is!
Its the first time I've seen so many Macheads get so excited about running windows (or windows applications).
The biggest turnaround in groupthink since.... well... the switch to intel

But what would be the advantage of running Linux vs. the BSD-based MacOS X?
1) Because you like free software.
2) You need to run many X applications (and want to see them at native speeds)
3) You want to run MySQL (or nmap, or many other OSS packages) with better performance.
To multi-boot before this you had to use drivers that had been hacked and probably violated someones copyright. [emph mine]
What? Why do you say that?
BAMBIOS is an EFI program (based on bochs bios emulation code) that allows legacy bootloading.
It does not violate anyone's copyright.
why the download is 83GB as it'll contain drivers for all of the Intel mac platforms.
Hmmmmn, I did miss that! 83MB still seems like alot - but I guess its Windows bloat & there's not alot Apple can do about it!
Well if you make ubuntu work on this setup i am of to by a mac. Anybody knows?
You've been able to boot linux on the intel macs for some time now.
And it looks like someone has ubuntu running on them allready

What you have to understand is that, unlike you and your kin, the world's science community cannot focus on a single issue.
I made no comment about the world science community. I made critcism of two corporations who have behaved atrociously.
The world science community can (and should) do whatever the hell it likes, but I reserve my right to critcize the way people utilize their findings.

So... uh... don't buy them? Use the system you've been using so far, which seems to work well enough?
You do realise how plants work don't you? It's quite possible for cross pollination to occur without the express written permission of the farmer.
I know its a little much to expect an ac to read the article, but right in there:So - you're going to need a special 'receptor' sugar for each toxin type.
*sighs*
Mention bioterrorism and you're guaranteed publicity and funding.
Meanwhile, the real bioterrorists are never going to be bought to justice.
