The decision to accept or decline an offer of donated computers for your school can be complicated. There are many important questions to ask, including:
Is the computer crippled - ie. Does it have Windows installed? How much admin overtime will you have to pay for the bugs to be sorted out so you can get these Windows machines working? Will your teachers or students need counselling after they use Windows?
If you feel it is in the best interest of your school to accept the donated PCs, make sure that the hardware donation does not include Windows. Not using windows on a PC is not just a great benefit - it is your right.
Basically they imply that all PCs must have Windows, all PCs have always had Windows, and any other OS is either illigal or doesn't exist. They managed to say all this with out using the word 'Windows'
The "It is a legal requirement that pre-installed operating systems remain with a machine for the life of the machine" bit should read:
"It is a legal requirement that pre-installed Windows OSs remain with a machine for the life of the machine"
That could infact be true, I havn't read the EULA. You can't really define a 'machine' because its simply a collection of components. If you change the case is it still the same machine? Maybe they refer to the hard-drive that stores Windows. Its an erasable media and could loose its data in an accident. Does that mean, that if while carrying my Windows CD, i trip and fall onto the computer, breaking the CD and bringing a large nearby magnet into contact with the hard-drive i would be breaking the law? I think not. Anyway, im ok 'cos i have my pirate version of Windows installed so my computer is legal.
Remember people, pirating Windows, is not just a great benefit - it is a legal requirement!
When the thieves get into the car, the doors and windows lock. The car then drives itself for a few miles before smashing the occupants into a specially built brick wall. The car would be a write-off and the police could remove all the devices, then claim insurance for theft and damage. The thieves would be dead so it wouldn't fill up the prison system or waste the time of overworked judges. Also, you would be using different cars each time, and the thieves wouldn't be able to tell anyone about it (they are dead) thus, no-one will catch on.
Or, failing that. you just chase the stolen car, surround it and OH MY GOD HES GOT A GUN!!!! shoot the *armed* thieves.
You are then creating a situation where you assume most of what is out there is dangerous to kids in some way.
Most of what is out there _is_ dangerous to kids in some way.
Allow ".kids" Deny "everything"... I prefer the Deny ".prn" or ".xxx" and allow the rest of what is out there
Its not about what you prefer, its about the most logical, efficient solution that does the job the best and pisses-off the least amount of people - ie. allow.kids, deny everything else.
There's no way in hell that you can police every site on the internet to make sure that its in the right.xxx domain. Its relatively easy though, to restrict who can register.kids domains, and periodically check them to make sure they are operating within the guidelines. This is the exact same principle used for regulating all sorts of services in the real world - you are given permission to show a certain logo on your product if you conform to a certain standard, you are not forced to show a 'does not conform to x standard' logo if it doesn't
Why force people to move to another domain, when the people who want to create child-safe websites could willingly put their sites into a.child-safe domain and you could allow you childeren access to this domain only.
Ummmm its not like America is the only country in the world. I can host my dot-com anywhere else and put the most explicit hate-speech-fetish-goat-sex(tm) i want on it, and not only can no-one do anything about it, but they can't censor it either. Those little kiddies with.prn filtered machines will still be able to see my evil BA HA HA HA HA HA HAAA.
Ok. heres a crazy idea - you want a domain where people can surf with-out porn and what-not. so why don't _YOU_ f*ck off and move _YOUR_ sites to a restricted domain instead of forcing others to.
I wouldn't call my 60GXP rock solid. It failed within 2 months. Plenty of other people have posted similar experiances. My 5 year old seagate has been spun up and down and run for hours on a daily basis. Its travelled hundereds of miles by plane, train and car and been run in alsorts of conditions. Its been spun more times than george bush's verbal mistakes and it's had more connecters inserted into it than some witty character who likes to insert things into themselves (like i dunno - a horny college girl?). Never once has it failed (It will probably go right now wont it? HA! but not before i press 'Submit'

Personally i just don't think a massive electronic attack is going to cut it. Bin Laden wants everyone to know about his stunts, and lets face it, DoS'ing some servers and bringing a few routers down is just not going to get as much media attention as something more trendy like anthrax. What he could do, is use the EMP from a nuke to dissrupt something, that would be like killing 2 metophorical birds with one lump of plutonium
How can a plastic disk sell for so much? Well it certainly doesn't cost that much to make, so lets go down a level, it must be mastered - mixed and tweaked by an engineer.. oh, no sorry, that can't be right, because in all the 'behind the scenes' shows i've seen, the producer sticks it all in 'Cool Edit' and plays around a bit. Ok, so what about recording. Studios are full of expensive equipment and they charge by the hour. Oh, but today's albums can be all recorded in 1 or 2 takes because the artists are so hopeless that another try won't make a difference. Alright what about the artists, i mean, surely they cost a bit? well, actually no. Now-days, all bands and singers are 'found' by TV shows called Pop-Idol, Pop-Stars, or Making the Band. The shows can be made on the cheap with a rented out hall and a couple of cameras. You can drag them out for weeks by eliminating potentials with audience votes. And the grand final on its own can generate enough advertising revenue to feed a small 3rd world country.
So where does all this money go? well, cocaine. This expensive drug can be sure to set you back a bit, and we all know how much those big execs love to snort. So the real pigs here aren't in fact the executives/producers whatnot, they themselves are victims of overpricing. Its actually the drug dealers who are making all the money, and the reason is monopoly. Yes, because drugs such as coke are outlawed in most countries, very few people are willing to take the risk and sell them. And, those that do take big risks. This allows them to charge almost as much as they like for their merchandise, and in a free-market, this is simply not on.
Right that does it, ive tried to be polite, but im sorry, your country's patent system is f*cked up. Go patent sticking it up your ass, or someone else will...
Maybe they could have used the empty space left by the twin towers to create a massive CG advertising rack for American Airways "We fly you all the way to your office"
Great, see Mr Hollings, you don't need to create draconian laws designed by hollywood to make people get broadband. I want to get broadband anyway so i can finally download all those warez, mp3s, pr0n and moviez with out having to wait!!
But why would anyone want to use BT? they are greedy pigs (and my lines are crappy quality) i think consume.net is a better option (when i get those wireless cards...)

Fritz Hollings latest law: The Digital Advertising Protection Act, is designed to encourage growth in the online economy. With out it, citizens would see less advertising and therefore their lives would be dull, and they would not use the internet so much.
The Digital Advertising Protection or DAPA covers three main issues: 1) Protection of advertisers against censorship 2) Protection of advertisers against legal retaliation 3) Protection of advertisers against slander
Notable laws under DAPA: * Advertisers have the right to run code remotely on a users computer without permission or knowledge of the user, as long as the code is solely for advertising purposes.
* Users may not install, run, create, or otherwise possess software which removes or blocks advertising ('ad-blockers') from their computer.
* It is illegal to not view advertising when viewing the associated web-site, film, game, television program or other form of media. For example, when watching Friends (on a _digital_ network) it is illegal to leave the room, close your eyes, or otherwise avoid watching the advertising during breaks. When viewing a website, you must view all advertising on that site
* Advertisers reserve the right to deny access to content, including content that has been paid for, if it is found that the viewer/user has not watched the associated advertising. For example, if you were to watch a film in the cinema, the advertisers may ask you questions before the film and require answers via a key-pad to prove you had watched the adverts/trailers. You may be removed from the cinema if it is found that you did not watch the adverts.
* The use of 'Time-shifting' devices is legal, but the advertisers retain the right to access the storage media to 'update' advertisements that may other wise be out of date.
* Purchasing products or services shown in an advertisement is non-compulsory, however, for tax purposes, you maybe required to answer questions about the advertising you have seen.
Are the three extra 0's really necessary? why is it called JPEG2000 when the year 2000 was 2 years ago? why do people insist on stupid marketing hype names? why the f/* can't it just be called JPEG v2 or JPEG2? WHY? This is the problem with our world, just like iBook and easyJet, why do people have to come up with this out-dated, over-used, "oh I'm so arty" bull shit? It's not cool, its not fun. Names don't suddenly become boring and grey if you don't string words together or not capitalize the first letter. We're not writing code, and most of the people who do come up with these names are not really geeks so they don't have any excuses such as 'I never name variables with spaces' or 'I never capitalize names or 'i's'. Lots of systems don't have problems with spaces (especially Win. 9x where I see way to much of this) anymore so why do people do it? its just annoying to the point of making a perfectly sane person write a long post ranting about it.
I wouldn't mind normally, but if this is going to be used for the next 10 years, lets not give it a stupid name.
I'm sure this has already been mentioned but I couldn't be bothered to go through 200 posts.
Honestly, who cares? does it really matter? If they didn't have Carnivor (or whatever its called) then they would sure as hell have something else which they probably wouldn't tell anyone about (which they probably do). Encryption is not outlawed (well not yet), and even if it was (which they couldn't do anyway) i don't think anyone would give a crap and would carry on using it anyway, and claim they were sending "random data", or just use stenography. Governments are always going to spy on people, but i suppose this is not about that issue - its about the fact that people want to be able to send plain-text without havng to bother encrypting it (something which many email clients can do automatically for you) possibly because they are lazy. Even if the government doesn't spy on your network traffic, i'm sure there are some voyeuristic admins at your ISP/school/uni/workplace/router who have nothing better to do than browse your mail-box (see BOFH).
Another excuse for the US Government to try and stop the Euro-GPS going ahead on the grounds that it violates the DMCA/SSSCA/'Cable Bullshit Act'. Or, maybe it just wont work with the new system which would mean everyone would still be forced to use the American system for decrypting DVDs (The only thing this technology will be used for).
Did Java make you better in bed or just hornyer? For example Coffee (Java) would probably make you more alert/hyper and it maybe that early sun developers found this was also true with (programming) Java. I know that when I code HTML, or tweak CSS, its so easy and generally problem and bug free that it puts me in a very good mood. If however your solving tedious problems all day in some obscure language then you will feel bad.
Also, creativity and imagination would likely play a big part, with, i suppose lower level languages allowing you more freedom, which could be good or bad? higher-level languages are slightly more restrictive but force you to come up with some really imaginative work-arounds. I suppose there would be a balance somewhere. (We don't want to start programming VBasic now do we!:)
