  1. Bigger IPO than RedHat? on VA Reprices Again · · Score: 1

Why shouldn't they have a bigger IPO than Red Hat?
They make more money (AFAIK) than Red Hat, I'd rather invest in a company that doesn't lose millions of dollars every quarter.

That's not to say that I wouldn't love to get in on Red Hat now, because I see them going far...
but I would rather invest in VA.

Anyone want to lend me $3000 or so and their letter?

  2. No, They Didn't ever make money on them on IBM Leaving Retail PC Market · · Score: 1

IBM's sales losses on the Aptiva series have been about equal to the profits from the Thinkpad series. In these times when everyone is making PCs in their garage and selling them the name IBM doesn't mean much compared to the significant price difference.

They've always made their sales based on superior technical service, but it seems that recently no one is mentioning about that. I recently went into a major computer store (that shall remain anonymous) and pretended to no little about PCs in order to ask the dumb/fun questions. The salesperson showed me the IBMs they had in stock first. When I asked what all I would be getting for that price He immediately moved me over to the e-machine-like PCs, never mentioning why IBMs cost more.

I can't say I didn't see this move coming. You dont stay the biggest name in the computer industry by losing millions a year when you dont have to do so.

I rarely created boot disks in any OS but once while installing Red Hat 5.0 (Wow! A real long time ago!) I learned my lesson. The install crashed during the lilo install... I didn't notice the install didn't finish and got very upset, to say the least, as I spent the next few hours trying to fix it.

    I finally just re-installed.

  4. M$ is not ready for the future... on A Bold Essay From Tim O'Reilly · · Score: 1

On most of the ideas put forth by Tim I have to agree... Very soon everything we know a computer to be is going to change... The Killer App is dying... The 'Net is taking a high priority in almost everyone's lives... etc...

But while Linux and other *NIX are just beginning to compete with M$ for desktop space, they are not behind the times.

M$ does not have a good network based OS (or a good OS at all). They have just begun to see a network as useful (remember 95A? It didn't have any network abilities). So M$ is currently limited to desktop machines, and will be into the forseeable future. [W]Intel announces their new 64bit chip specs... Uh-Oh, M$ products wont run on those... but Linux will!

Remember dumb terminals? They're coming back... NT wont run dumb terminals very well, for it to work at all the terminal must have a win os on it... why would you want to have a dumb terminalif it already had it's own OS?... but Linux by it's very nature is ready to support terminals without missing a beat.

The comparisons go on longer than I wish to type... so let's say I just started you thinking on where computers are going and what OS's are ready...

  5. Re:Some thoughts on Whither Netscape 5.0? · · Score: 1

Netscape 5 still has the biggest chance... there still are and always will be the loyal few... we stuck with them during the versions 1.0 - 2.X, we stuck with them through netscape still charging and IE being free, we even stuck with them when AOL bought Netscape (I personally hoped that Sun would pick up the browser work). Once this version is out we will be there overflowing their ftp site and it's mirrors. Then the rest of you will follow....

P.S. If it didn't have some nuance that annoyed why would they ever upgrade?
P.S.S. Desktop Integration isn't the ploy to obsolete 486s, all M$ programs are a part of that conspiracy.
