I've seen in the computergate catalog (www.computergate.com) they have a card that mirrors your hard drive to another (raid 0) for $85 or a 4 drive IDE raid card for $120. I think Promise makes some IDE raid cards under $200 also...
I recently heard from my senator about patent issues -- they are revising the patent laws, and from what little I've read it's being rushed through. It's HR 1907 and S.1798. Find out and get involved
Looking at the presidence the breakup of Ma Bell (the last big monopoly), does the judge have the leeway to force Microsoft to open up their operationg system? I.e., Since Bell had a monopolistic control on the phone lines, the court said that they had to share the infrastructure with competitors. Could the same be applied here? Since the ruling states Microsoft has a monopoly on the operating system, could they be forced to open up Windows??
Instead of hacking patients info, they'll just buy it from you, and isn't THAT the problem?? What good is secure transaction of patient/doctor conversations if it's easy to get a hold of people's medical records (ask any insurance company how easy it is!).
Another web related problem I've been dealing with on the toasters discussion group (Toasters=NetApp type hardware) is that the web designers want all the bells and whistles, and people noticed that because of said bells and whistles they can't get to the support website using LYNX because it requires cookies and javascript.
Uh, if your system is down and you're sitting at a VT terminal, all you can use is lynx. No pretty GUI matters -- gimme the damn files and info.
But in deference to this article -- the next logical extension to the problem is the web page creators. They just grab all the neato tools and use them. They don't care if they're proprietary or not, just if it looks cool. And they just use microsoft o/s because that's the default. I mean who here has seen Intel's commercial for their free web tools? You can bet that doesn't work on an Alpha or on linux...
It's an issue of symptom vs. cause. The cause is ignorance, the symptom is proprietary plugins.
To me it's ovbious. The non-industrial nations have the "grow-your-own-farm-hands" system, because it's brute force labor to survive and you neighbor is doing the same, so no one else is going to help you.
That is also why in many lesser developed countries, girls are less desireable then boys - boys can do brute force, while women have to be given away for money (dowery) and can only do domestic chores (or so goes the stereotype).
The theory proposed by some for the "individualistic in modern society" isn't right because the social norms are passed down from generation to generation. I've found people who come from big families usually want big families, while people from small families want few or no children.
And let's face it, it isn't for economic reasons -- there are a lot of big families on welfare. I have lived in these areas and the mentality is "have another child to get more welfare". Sad..
Uh, isn't the obvious answer "BSD would be what linux is now" ?? It WAS the first "open source" unix.
Other then that, Solaris had been dropping their prices to get more people to run solaris on x86 machines, so I would guess Solaris would be popular, because even though it's proprietary and not free, GNU makes sure all the tools and such are (and are easier to develop for)..
Sounds similar to when Harley Davidson tried to apply for a patent for the way their motorcycle sounds.
In reality, it was inevatable. I remember in the 80's there was a box called "russian dragon" which would speed up or slow down according to how the drummer was playing (rushing-dragging) to give the sequenced music more of a human feel. The backlash against the 80's music was because it was too mechanical and "on the beat"...
While I don't believe myths and such, it is rather scary how it matches the story of babel. Since we can't be scattered to the corners of the earth, what'll happen?
Uh, does that mean the end of the world? Didn't the creators of the tower of babel get smitten or something? I remember something about god not being happy so he did something and destroyed the tower...
One thing to think about -- I worked at a place with 40 NCD X-terms and our network was only 10baseT, so when we would have power outages, the network couldn't handle the bandwidth for bootp and only half of the X-terms would come back up.
The point is, in this model you're going to be putting a bigger load on your network, don't forget that. Also, X traffic is considered a security problem in some corporations and is blocked. At the least make sure the xhosts is set up to block people from mucking with each others' displays (had hours of fun with that!).
Is it me or are journalists pretty heavy with the thesaurus? I mean why must all articles be written like a novel, instead like a news article? I mean paragraphs like :
It's a conundrum that makes one wonder about the motives of the reigning Internet digerati, who spend much of their time assuring us that they are protecting our interests as they quietly arrogate power in the new world order.
that make me stop reading news. Digerati? Arrogate? Conundrum? Who, other then journalism majors (and by extension PHB's) uses these words? I want plain news. If I want lots of pretty words I would pick up a paper-back novel.
After the multitude of manuals I have to pour over daily in my job, I want to be able to read a quick, concise news article and find out what's going on - not read the ramblings of frustrated novelists who's day job is journalism...
I noticed that also "evil borg","evil man","evil company","evil empire","evil place" will give you Microsoft as firset hit, but not "evil men", "evil person" or just "evil".
Something like this is perfect for those of us who have to carry a pager and deal with after-hour problems. It's a pocket size terminal. Now, if they only made a cell phone adapter for it and a terminal program, it'd be perfect....
Most of you are missing the point. It's not **AMERICAN** censorship, but it extends much, MUCH further then that. This group is for all civilized countries -- This is a US/EU type censorship.
And why are only businesses & governments represented?? Isn't the bulk of web sites NON COMERCIAL?? Who's representing the average Joe at this event??
No, be fair people. Yea, it looks goofy (so does Apple's i-products). If you think of a house that's networked together, instead of sticking your server in a closet, you could have it in your living room and be able to check it at will. From a lot of postings, most people failed to notice that the keyboard is WIRELESS so it's not like you have to sit on the floor next to it to use it.. But think of having your main server (RUNNING LINUX!!) in your living room and durring commercials check your server. Not so bad..
SGI started the whole "make-computers-astheticly-pleasing" concept, and having worked in an SGI shop I must say that while they look cool, they still take up useful space. There's only so many "artwork" computers you can put in a room -- why not make it into something useable? I mean if you've ever had to deal with fitting many "deskside" computers (SGI's terminology) in a server closet, you kinda get the idea.
And for someone who want his own personal LAN in their own small apartment, this works. While it takes up space it also becomes somthing useable:q . As to the cables, just tie them all together. Most apartments have terrible layouts of power outlets, so you're tripping over cords anyways.
Although I will grant you, it does look like those portable toilets for camping......
I have known alot of people who work(ed) at ISP's who swear by BSD, and I understand it is a very well written O/S. I have been tempted to try it, but after getting a job of upgrading some sun boxes from the OLD SunOS (which was BSD style unix) to Solaris 7 (sys V style unix) there were too many differences for my liking. Now, from my reading of the intro of O'Reilly's Systems Administration book (VERY good discription about the different flavors of unix), there is quite a divergence between SYS V and BSD styles of unix.
SO, I was hoping for an article that would address this question -- is there still such a difference?
The thing is, most of the commercial unicies are SYS V style, so I would imagine it becomes a royal pain to remember the differences when you go home to a BSD box after working all day on a sys V implementation of unix. Is this still the case, or have the two styles converged a lot?
Anyone have an answer/link?? Drop me a line -- orrjl@stl.nexen.com
(was it too much to look for an article that asked the REAL questions instead of posing as flame bait??)
I thought it was the worst movie I had ever seen! My wife and I got sickened by the jittery camera (the WHOLE thing is filmed from a hand-held camera), and was bored through most of it. The plot was an interesting idea, but I think more people are enamored by the idea of an "alternative" film rather then by the film itself. It seemed like most of the people around me had the same opinion. Mind you, I'm open to a good alternative movie (i.e. Trainspotting), but this should never of been a major motion picture release. It's playing off of the trendyness of "alternative" and Wicanism. If you look at it as a movie, it SUCKS!!!!
We also saw the haunting and Inspector Gadget too, and thought both were better then this movie..
I opened an account with E-trade as soon as/. mentioned redhat's intention to go public. Later, I decided to try to get in an IPO to make sure I could do it when RedHat came about. I too was naievely honest and filled out I didn't have much experience, and it rejected me.
I called E-trade and complained and they explained that it's the SEC's regulations that decides it, not them, and it was out of their hands. At that point I wasn't eligable for that IPO, but they said future IPO's I could change my profile and maybe I'd be eligable. It hurt, because it was for china.com which doubled within days after the IPO...
Well, the next one came about, and I changed my profile to say I knew what I was doing, and sure enough I was able to get to that one.
Bottom line, it's SEC's regulations, not E-trade, not a microsoft conspiracy, not a government/republican plot, not anything else. Plain and simple.....
Oh, on the down side, you have to buy in lots of 100 shares for IPO's...
IF you like this idea, try this :
= 21596955211819&cd=OU202
http://www.computergate.com/cgi-bin/prodinfo?sn
at only $18 and has DB9 connector, works for linux.
Anyone know how to convert PC keyboards/mice for sun boxes???
I've seen in the computergate catalog (www.computergate.com) they have a card that mirrors your hard drive to another (raid 0) for $85 or a 4 drive IDE raid card for $120. I think Promise makes some IDE raid cards under $200 also...

Their chart :
http://www.xig.com/Pages/LaptopBENCHtables.html
shows they are comparing to Xfree86 3.3.3.1, so in claiming that Xfree86 doesn't support many of the cards is a lie.
Oh well, as the saying goes - lies, damn lies, statistics...
