    I learned to use lyx pretty quickly. I know no Latex and it's pretty easy to use once you get used to it. My girlfriend who knows nothing about computers learned to use it in a day and says she's not going back to anyother word processor.

    yes, to turn of a feature like this one must play the happy game of find the dialog box. The way to play:
    Click on a menu item. Since they are changing all the time anyway you can just randomly go around clicking. Now whenever a dialog box appears look at it. If it matches the one you are looking for, then we have a winner. If it doesn't you loose. Now how do we know weather or not the dialog box is the right one. You don't. Really you just click a couple times in the dialog box and see if it helps the situation you are in. If this doesn't help, then it probably did some damage. You have to start again, this time in search of the original dialog and the one you just manipulated. Eventually through skill at playing this game you will become proficient. This is one of the reasons that winNT is such a joke as a server. To reconfigure anything you need to play this find the dialog box game and the best remote admninstration tool for winNT is a car.

    2.1 was bleeding edge and unstable. These versions are still unstable as they are old unstable versions. These versions won't get stable just because alot of time has past. You are obviously not a coder other wise you would realize just what kind of bug this is. As of late 2.1 and 2.2 linux allows finer control over permisions than other systems. This is good but it wasn't working just how it should. This bug could be exploited to get root if you already managed to exploit another bug in sendmail. If this bug wan't around you would get nobody. Big deal. If there is a bug in sendmail, That would be the bug to worry about anyway.

    They either use debian or Suse. I don't think there are anymore, but I could be wrong.

    the yellowdog packages are essentially the same as the linuxppc ones. 90% of the people running linux on a mac use linuxppc or yellowdog. So the linuxppc support is not unwaranted.

    that's the theory anyway. in practice things don't neccesseraly work out that way. that is why these defensive patents are springing up.

    doesn't the us government realize that if patents worked the way they are supposed to then this would not be neccessary? If I invent something and I don't patent it, then some else "invents" it later and patents it, I lose. This is ridiculous.

    no linux won't crash with non-beta drivers. The creative drivers were buggy closed source drivers. Creative has released the source to these and now my sblive works perfectly. I've had non-beta 3c9000b drivers from dell crash a windows nt machine and put it in a non recoverable state. The fact that you have to reinstall the service pack to nt every time you install something shows just how rediculous nt is.

    I can't believe they gave macos the internet support category. It took me months to find ssh for the mac. ssh is definetly an internet necessity. Also outlook sucks and crashed many times on my mac eudora doesn't come with an imac or macos. You can download the free version but then you get an advertisement filling your screen. With linux I can do what I want on the net. proxies, servers, clients. Not so with macos, does apache run on a mac.

    For the longest time now I've been buying used cd's in my area. I remember there was a time a while ago when the recording industry tried to prohibit the sale of used cd's. This ended up backfiring. I hope that napster will force the price of cd's down to where the used ones are now. They are just to damn expensive. I'm just glad I live in an area where there are 5 that I can think of used cd store's and probably plenty more. It's also alot like mp3s you get to find alot of good old discontinued stuff. Plus the stuff costs alot closer to what it's supposed to cost, $5-9.

    you've never worked on a real software project have you. Linus said that he does not understand all the source making up the linux kernel. Yet many of still use linux. On big projects it is rare for one person to be able to understand all the code. And if the code is written properly than it really doesn't matter.

    I really don't think anti-aliased fonts look that much better. I think the problem with fonts is, that the font's that get distributed with the standard distributions are ugly. I have copied true type font's over from a windows computer and gotten much better results. Also I think netscape does a poor job with fonts, which is another reason to think fonts suck. The problem is with netscape as mozilla looks leaps and bounds better with its handling of fonts.

    card locally. Especially XFree86 4.0

    Matrox has released most of their specs.

    There are open source 3d drivers for both.

    emulators are only good for older systems. with a playstation you need a cd. (either way you can get a copy but modchiped playstations play them too). with the upcoming nintendo you will need a cd. with the upcoming sega you will need a cd. So emulators are just not going to put you out of business. N64 emulation just sucks.
