I know it's not for everybody, but if you have a great employer like I do who will buy you a whole server and expensive software to run on it, then citrix metaframe is a wonderful solution. All I need to run is a very light-weight Linux client (works on BSD too with linuxcompat), and I have all the MS software I need right there in my X server. I can do all the Outlook/Word/Excel crap I need to, without ever worrying about rebooting or hogging resources or not having the full functionality of the software. I can even cut and paste from an xterm to NT without any extra effort.
Those guys at Citrix really did a great job, it's saved my uptimes and the NT guys can worry about all the email viruses I open with Outlook. HA!
"We're going to cut off their air supply, what they are charging for we will give away for free."
Now think about that, and think about the Microsoft OS cash cow that this weenie refers to (win9x, NT, 2000, whatever). Linux is free to anyone and does far more than win-WHATEVER does for real money. They are charging for something that we are giving away... and their products are inferior in many respects. Netscape got clobbered by this tactic, and still hasn't recovered. MS cannot be immune to it themselves. Let's all watch it happen.
I have seen some talk about teams of squirrels, and what they might do for the quality of slashdot discussions. If they were well trained, I think it would work admirably.
But squirrels are unreliable, and can't cross the street to save their lives (heh). What/. really needs is a gigantic Perl brain that understands the spirit of the site and pre-moderates the most obvious offensive flamebait trolling crap that bubbles across the wire. It could read every comment and filter out maybe 75% of the worst ugly trash, and leave the rest to the moderators.
C'mon Rob, IRC is full of bot-brains that do this sort of thing (albeit on a much smaller scale), and we all know that Perl is well suited to the task. Think about it, it could run on it's own dedicated machine, have a cool name, and develop its own personality over the years. It's a great project and would be fun to do, and everybody who is qualified would lend a hand, I'm sure.
Just noticed that those very attractive topic icons seem to be all GIFs. So Rob, is Andover gonna cough it up for the licesnse, will you convert them, or will you defy the MAN?
Almost 600 comments in just under 4 hours. This topic is for me the quintessential controversy of our modern day. People just don't get tired of arguing heatedly about it. For me, it comes down to this: If God can make a man out of mud, why can't He make a man out of a monkey? Notice how God figures prominently in there, but there is room for evolution as well.
.. of course now we will need some cartoons of scoop showing the sundry effects of wealth (and a recent birthday) on his formerly impeccable character.
I am sick to death of hearing about this guy. What has he done for any of us? As a community or as individuals? Post everything you can think of, it's still a short list. The only reason his story has struck a chord with some people is that it looks like the little guy against the man, and that makes Americans go crazy.. we love that stuff. But the little guy is supposed to have some kind of virtue, and Kevin, whatever else you might say, hasn't shown any of that to the public. Interestingly absent from all discussion of his case is the word 'innocent'. He broke the laws of his country and he got caught. He is being punished for it. It takes more than that to be a hero, or so I would like to hope. The best thing you can say is that he was denied his constitutionally guaranteed speedy trial. But this just reflects poorly on our justice system, and doesn't do much for my impression of this crackerjack. The man is sick, yes, he is in a crummy position, yes, he was not granted a heaping constituional helping, perhaps... but a hero he is not. There are real heros, and there are Kevin Mitnicks, and I hope even the 2600 crowd knows the difference, despite the attention his story has drawn.
if it doesn't have blinking lights, how can it be technology??? Bell Atlantic just installed a big-ass switch at our office, now THAT thing is technology. I watch star trek for the hot alien babes and the blinking lights, is there any other reason? C'mon people, we should be covering for eachother when it comes to superfluous blinking lights, not exposing the sham, let's get with it! Al Gore is almost certainly behind this.

What happens when a nuclear bomb test "goes bad"? ...does it blow up?
HA-haha
To quote internal MS email regarding netscape:

What the hell is a four year old going to do with her own internet connection? Spend your time more usefully at the local soup kitchen.
