"install your favorite firewall (I like zonealarm)"
You're halfway there. ZoneAlarm is admittedly helpful for notifiying you of outgoing connections, but I wouldn't put any faith in a software firewall running under Windows (no flame intended). Pick up a cheap Linksys or Netgear firewall and be done with it. No desktop computer should be exposed to the Internet.
My policy in helping people out is the usual AdAware/Spybot/Firefox/hardware firewall advice cocktail. I then tell them not to bother me again if they don't switch completely over to Firefox and install a hardware NAT box...why should I take time to help you if you don't follow through?
"American's don't get the concept of a Crown corporation. They don't act like any other "rational business"."
The US Postal Service is akin to a crown corporation. It is a nationally-mandated corporation that runs on its own funding (except when things get really bad).
The idea of the stereotypical gay person didn't exist until the 1800's; it's a relatively modern social constuct. Before that time, people were still doing heterosexual and homosexual acts with one another, but they weren't characterized by that one trait.
To put things into perspective, it's like defining Linux and Windows users into two different types of people. Of course, you know what that makes those who dual boot:)
"That means that the games that finally are available for the Mac are the cream of the gaming world."
Except for Counter-Strike...but that's why I keep a decent second-hand PC lying around. Just swap over the video cable and 2 USB cables (too cheap for a KDM) and I'm good to go!
I don't think it's a coincidence that the most fucked up kids (due to shitty parenting skills always) you see on Dr. Phil all have "unique" names. Just look at the names of all the kids in the "Family in Crisis" series as an example.
Why not just pay the $300 lifetime service fee and be done with it then? If you go to sell your Tivo at some point in the future, you're pretty much guaranteed to get the money back since the lifetime sub goes with the machine.
Along those same lines, you should also form a limited liability company (LLC) to actually conduct all of the business and affairs of the LAN party. It's no substitute for insurance (which your LLC would now purchase), but it separates your entire personal life from the business/risk aspect of the LAN party. A Delaware LLC is not too expensive to form (or you can buy a pre-made LLC for a nominal fee).
"It can simply come from "good will" and "brand value." Those are items that show up on the balance sheet too."
(I do a little SFAS 141/142 work and know a couple things about this.)
Not exactly. Goodwill only shows up on the balance sheet as the excess over book value you paid for another company in an acquisition. "Brand value" is just a subset of that. Your own company's goodwill is inherently reflected on the *income statement*, to the extent that you are generating earnings.
If another company came along and bought Google, then Google's "brand value" would be reflected in the goodwill account of the acquiring company.
Griffin also makes the iMic, which gives you audio-in over USB. They're relatively cheap and come with software (Mac&PC) for converting vinyl/casettes to MP3.
"...it bothers me that there are those who think it's their God-given right to free music or movies simply because they're available to download..."
The fact that such people are operating illegally doesn't make this law any better. The punishment should fit the crime; and this seems like another asinine law to overburden our already crowded prisons.
On the other hand, I know of some investment bankers who have a "do no evil" type of clause in their charters and they're actually committed to rescuing dying companies and helping to create jobs. But I guess the evil ones get more press coverage:)
1. partitioning to live with OS X (assuming you took this route) 2. configuring X to work with the ATI graphics
I might want to try this out on my iBook G4. Ubuntu is super fast on my Inspiron 8200, although I can't get X configured right with the Nvidia drivers.
He should have used the right fonts and spacing if the nature of the assignment was to reproduce the format of another document. Despite what the professor said, it does not seem like an issue of Word vs. OOo.
At my job if I wrote a report using anything other than our standard format (1.5 lines, CG Time 12) regardless of the word processor used (Word, Wordperfect, whatever), it wouldn't be allowed out the door.
"...how is this a security risk?"
A part of your security is having control over your computer. Your security has been compromised when you lose that control.

Well, if you exclude China, then yes...you're spot on!

The FCC is also mandating that receivers made after a certain date honor the broadcast flag. It's not good regardless of the semantics.

AdSense works just fine under Safari (KHTML) and FireFox 1.0PR (Gecko). The author is either ignorant or a liar.
The idea is not original. Tabbed browsing has its origins in spreadsheets going back years.

There are lots of girls in your area on:
1. your college's Unix network (who, finger and talk are all you need to meet girls) (personal score: 2)
2. IRC: become a regular on a channel or two (personal score: 4)
3. Is Yahoo Personals still free? (personal score: 2)
4. ivisit...just buy a decent webcam (personal score 1)
The most important thing to keep in mind is to not be in "desperately seeking" mode, just be yourself.

"...the "ga-bluck, ga-bluck" TiVo button sound..."
Not to nitpick, but it's more of a "ba-doop" sound.

I think it's inevitable that the cultures of /. and fark will merge.
Nah, probably something simpler like MS-DOGS. /window seat please
I just missed like the first half of the show reading these posts...thanks a lot you bastards :)

My ultra religious in-laws visiting me this week are in for a little torture tonight
"Hey, I think I'll invest in a company (Suncomm) that tries to install software behind the user's back and cripple their computer!"
Anyone that invests in such a company deserves to lose the shirt off their back.
