I remember when I went to Fry's to get some new components. The salesman (ever talk to a sales person at Fry's BTW) told me to go with the Cyrix 6x86 166 instead of a genuine Intel Pentium. He said that they cost less, offer full compatability, and offer better performance than Intel.
It turned out only one of these things were true. It did indeed cost less. But then again you get what you pay for. I remember I had such a hard time with a lot of software, only to call up tech support and find out that the product isn't Cyrix compatable or it needed a patch or something. One peice of hardware I bought (soundcard or something) turned out to be incompatable with Cyrix processors. Not only that, but performance was terrible. Sure it was a nice upgrade from my 486, but compared to actual Intel machines I used, it was pretty bad. Not only that, I found out later that their 6x86 '166' wasn't actually 166Mhz. It ran at 133 and had "special features that make it run as fast as if it were 166Mhz". What a clever marketing scheme. Intel should do that too: Come out with the Pentium 1.2Ghz that only runs at 800Mhz but has "special features" so it runs as fast as if it were 1.2Ghz.
In conclusion, I vowed to never buy another Cyrix processor as long as I may live. I advise others to do the same, and not to believe their hype. Remember what they delivered in the past, and that history often repeats itself.
It comes preinstalled with Windows CE, but you can install NetBSD or Linux? Can you buy it prepackaged with NetBSD, or do you have to download and install it youself? How do you install it? This is a palmtop, remember. Do you install the files over the serial interface? Even after you have it installed, how do you interface with this thing? Does it have its own special version of X? Or is it just console commands? And why exactally would it be useful to have BSD or Linux on a palmtop anyways? Usually the palms proprietary OS does everything that the palmtop is supposed to do. Are you gonna be running Apache on your Workpad or what. C'mon people.
What kind of puzzles? Chess puzzles? I can get those out of the newspaper. Same with the bridge puzzle, the crossword puzzle, and the word Jumble. I really don't need to see these on Slashdot. IQ testing kind of puzzles aren't really that interesting either. (I personally believe that IQ tests don't prove anything except how well you take IQ tests, but that's just me). Posting stories about new kinds of puzzles, something with originality and some thought, that would be worth a post and a link.
OMG! This is incredible! They are actually considering open sourcing it! I'm breathless!
In reality... this is so stupid. Wasn't there a story earlier today about how Microsoft is considering releasing the source for Windows? So what? And there was a story yesterday about a new dev kernel being release? Who cares? These stories are so pointless. Where exactally is the "stuff that matters" A company considering releasing the source for a product isn't really news, and it certainly isn't stuff that matters. Get over it.
You know maybe I am just lucky or something, but I never really get spam, except the occasional special offer from Amazon or CDNOW, and only because I am a customer. There are steps you can take to reduce your spam intake drastically.
Any time you fill out one of those web forms, there is usually a check box saying whether or not you would like to receive special offers. If you surf smart, and make sure you instruct companies not to send you all their lame offers, that will reduce most of your spam right there.
Don't just freely give out your name and email to anyone who asks. Always read privacy policies. Make sure they aren't going to pimp out your info to advertisers.
Go to Hotmail or something and create a free email account for the soul purpose of using it when you have to fill in your name and email address to download a peice of software. A lot of companies ask for your email address just to download their program. Just give them the dummy one you never look at, or if you are really devious, give them a friends email address:)
Don't use AOL! This should be obvious to almost everyone here. They pimp out your name just for being a member.
By using these techniques, I have reduced my spam count to a minimum.
Look at this. Four replies previous to my own. Four different answers to the questions mentioned above. Of course all of the answers were correct in their own way.
There is consistancy. Each answer would do the requested task, in almost every program. And there are multiple ways to do it that would work in almost every program. Now that's consistancy.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but I don't think there are too many companies (besides maybe Lotus, who suck) that make the keyboard commands obscure. That wouldn't help people or make people want to buy their products. Windows does have consistancy.
I was born in 1981 and almost nothing you said applies to me. Just because I am younger doesn't mean I don't know anything about previous generations. But then again I am a somewhat retro person.
I do own a turntable BTW:) Three of them. Far superior to CDs except for two things
I can't play records in the car
I can't burn a mix record on my computer.
You didn't even make this stuff up. I've seen all these things in one of those circulating emails joke things that go around the office.
That's great tht they have developed such fast processor, but isn't it still just an x86? When are we going to see some real nextgen chips, Itanium or whatever you call it. Computer companies, for such a "futuristic" industry seem to love to live in the past.
Since Microsoft makes the WMP, I backup my whole system before installing it, including the Crimson show. This is common sense, I think. MS likes to delete other companies' libs without asking and replace them with their own, unstable ones for some reason. Something to do with monopolies or something
Maybe it's just me but I have never had any problems with Microsoft software besides the usual BSODs. Internet Explorer is a lot more stable than Mozilla. I don't know exactally how SDMI encryption works but with most copywrited software, reinstalling the OS doesn't remove the licenses, unless you remove the entire Windows directory. I don't know ANYONE who had to reinstall their OS because Windows Media Player installation screwed it up. Windows Media Player installation doesn't really overwrite anything except older versions of Media Player/ActiveMovie. All it does is accociate itself with all media formats it supports. Sounds like you are just making this up. Seems like you just want to act like you are Anti-Microsoft to be cool.
I love Shoutcast. OK so it is only audio, but IMHO it beats the living crap out of RealAudio and WMF. It's FREE! It sounds better. The server software is available for many platforms, and there are lots of players available for lots of platforms. It streams an open format (MP3) and doesn't use some kind of proprietary codec. It's easy to set up. There are plenty of internet "radio" stations that already use it. All and all it's great stuff. I am not sure why the technology isn't used by more sites. I think Shoutcast has quite a future in the streaming audio scene. Even if Microsoft eliminates Real, so what? High quality open streaming audio is always be available.
Especially since everyone knows that Pico is the best text editor around. Why do you masochists like to suffer with vim so much? Does making life harder on yourself build character or what?
By the way is it "vi" like rhymes with "vie" or is it "v-i"? Is it Emacs like E-Max (iMac?) or "Im-iks"? And is it "pee-ko" or "pick-o"?
Does anyone actually think these really high bids on the item are legit? With over 8 days left in the auction, there are 26 bids and the highest one is $2375 right now. I notice that the highest bid is made by a brand new user called "yournamefree.com" and has 0 feedback. Makes me wonder. I look at the bid history and notice most of the bidders have the "sunglasses" indicating they are new and many of them have 0 feedback.
Now do you think the highest bidder is legit? Do you think even 50% of them are serious bidders? I don't. The Slashdot effect seems to have had a very negitive affect here. Seriously people! Don't bid if you don't mean it.

Why should I care when Wal-Mart shuts down some local little shop with a poor selection and over priced products? Why should I have to sacrifice convienence for "morality"? Why should I support local businesses when giant corporations have so much more to offer? As a consumer, I'm happy that Blockbusters and Wal-Mart have taken over. They offer much more, and they make it better, cheaper, and easier.
This is true offline. Why should it not be true online? I used to be with a small, local ISP and I must tell you that it was the most miserable ISP I have ever had to deal with. My chances of getting a connection were 1 in 2. Three hour connection limit. Lousy tech support. Busy signals all the time. I switched to one of the major ISP's (not AOL) and I am so much happier. I get 24/7 tech support, almost no busy signals, can stay connected as long as I want. Basically it offered everything that the tiny little company didn't. What is there not to like about that?
AOL and Time Warner, like Wal-Mart before it, will bring bigger, faster, more convienent internet to the masses! I'm not going to use their service because I don't like what AOL offers, but I really don't see anything wrong with making life easier for people, even if it does mean eliminating crappy competition.
You should sell that vinyl on eBay. Some Star Wars moron would be willing to pay insane ammounts of money for it. That really is quite a SW collectors item.
I totally understand. My desk is poorly aranged making it difficult to use both mouse and keyboard at the same time. I'm pretty good with Windows keyboard commands and don't use the mouse much in Windows. This is tough with MacOS but can be done. However I've never found a WM that lets me be totally mouse free.
What I think would be great is a program that lets you emulate the mouse with the numeric keypad. Window's has such a utility (but it doesn't really work all that great). Does such a utility exsist for X? I think many mouse-haters would find such an app very useful.
Ha! I think its Corolla. Corona is a beer (and a wonderful beer at that). I don't think either of those are "real words" anyways. And its Camery. Not Camre.
Personally I like when companies just give their products model numbers.
Every day when I am driving home, I see this sign on the side of a building: "Aradigm"!
It just bugs me every time I notice it. Another dumb one is right downstairs: eForce. Any company can add e or i to their name and all of the sudden their name is Hi-tech and modernized. I think any failing company should just add an e or an i to their name.
These names are actually really cool. Ever consider a carreer in the company naming business? When I start my company, I'll be sure to ask you to come up with a name.
The nicknames people give products are usually much cooler than their actual names. Celery is a great name for a processor. What's even cooler is when companies actually start using the nicknames themselves. This doesn't happen very often though. Could you imagine Intel refering to their processor as the "Celery" on their web site?
Now where the hell do you get it from? There is only one short page and a couple screenshots on that page. I couldn't find links to any other information. Anyone know anything bout this?
In the town I live in, McDonalds sued a local coffee house called McCoffee. They had to change their name to M.Coffee. Rediculous.
My friend told me that in Scotland there is a ban on McDonalds for fear that they would file lawsuits against any businesses with family names in them that start with Mc. I don't believe that. That is a little too rediculous.
I noticed a couple days ago that TV adds for sites on the Go network had the green light logo removed. This is a shame, because Go's logo looked cooler than Goto's.
Anyways, I think Go network should have a contest to get a new logo, because frankly, the new one on Go's website sucks. The logo should indicate "going" somehow, like the greenlight did. But this time try and stay away from logos similar to other companies.
I'm surprised Lucent hasn't sued every company out there with cirular logos. Or Debian suing Sega over the Dreamcast logo. This whole lawsuit craze is ruining this country.

Or something like the online version of Chu-Chu Rocket. :)
