My favorite anime. It is kinda old, but it is hysterically funny. It is a mix of martial arts and comedy with the most uniquely wacky cast of characters ever. Curses from a cursed spring cause some of the characters to undergo changes when splashed with cold water, causing some interesting situations:
Ranma: He changes into a girl when he gets wet. His dad has set him up for about 4 arranged marrages.
Akane: Engaged to Ranma in a arranged marrage. She is very violent and quick tempered. Pretends not to like Ranma, but secretly does.
Ryoga: Changes into a pig when he gets wet. He is in love with Akane but is too shy to say so. Plus the pig (P-Chan) is Akanes pet and sleeps in her bed. If she ever found out that Ryoga was the pig, he would be a dead man
Shampoo: Changes into a cat with water. In love with Ranma, but Ranma doesn't really like her. Constantly using tricks to win Ranma/off Ranmas other fiancees
Moouse: In love with Shampoo, but Shampoo hates him. He is kind of an idiot
Ukyou: Also in love with Ranma but is somewhat shy about it. She is the tomboy type.
Kuno: Arrogant student at Ranma's HS. He hates Ranma but is in love with the "Pig-tailed girl" (which is just Ranma's girl-type)
Genma: Ranma's idiot father. Is very greedy and always making Ranma's life worse somehow.
Soun: Akane's father. Genma's best friend. They arranged for Ranma and Akane to be married years ago and are always trying to get them together.
And my favorite, Happosai: Soun and Genma's martial arts master. Very mischevious, very perveted. His hobby is stealing womens underwear. Always wants to get girl Ranma to try on bras.
The show is very silly but it always cracks me up. It also has very deep character development. Be sure to check it out. (Make sure you start with season one so you can truely see the character development)
I live on the Peninsula and work in the East Bay and let me tell you, it's great! I live over 30 miles from work and can make it there and back in less than half an hour. While westbound SM Bridge (which is about 8 miles long) is jam-packed in the mornings, eastbound morning traffic is non-existant. And while people are crawling back to the east bay at 5 miles an hour on that bridge, I am heading westbound at 70mph! I really wouldn't have it any other way.
While working in the East Bay is great, living in the East Bay isn't a bad idea either. The rent is a lot cheaper. The weather is hotter (this might be a bad thing depending on how you look at it). The freeways are wider and more numerous than the conjested, small Peninsula freeways. I really don't understand why more companies don't move to the East Bay. It's silly to start you're business in a place that cost's 2x as much and is impossible to get to like San Jose.
I dont mind a desktop that crashes twice a day. But I dont want a stable OS to run on my desktop with no games to be played.
It's not so much Linux sucks for games. It's more that very few games have been released. But seriously, I stopped playing games on my computer long ago. I've always prefered game consols over computers. The only PC games I buy anymore are little desktop divesions, and LucasArts style adventure games (Grim Fandango was the last computer game I bought) and it's a real shame that it is a dying genre.
I realize that computers do have a lot more power, and have better graphics, but my Playstation has never crashed, is user friendly, and doesn't require an upgrade of my graphics card/processor every 6 months in order to play the latest games. People who write games for consoles seem to always find a new way to exploit the little processor power they have rather than require you have the latest hardware in order to play their games. I remember old SNES games that were truely amazing considering how limited the SNES was. New PS games are pushing the outer limits of its capabilities. And the nextgen consoles are looking amazing. A 300 investment in a console lasts for 5 years before its sucessor is even released, and maybe 7 years before the console is no longer developed for. I can spend $300 on a video card that is obsolete before I open the box.
My point is, a computer is a waste of money if all you are going to use it for is a gaming console. If you are going to run Windows just so you can shoot aliens, and 5 BSODs a day is worth it, you are insane. Use a gaming console for games, goddamnit! And use a computer for work.
With a modern Linux distro the issues you point out arn't issues, all the aps/libs/etc that a user, even a technologically inept user, could need are *already installed*.
Sure, until Gnome 1.3.9.1.5 comes out and then you have to upgrade all you're fricking libraries and download a hundred RPMs or compile a bunch of crap in order to make it work properly. Then a week later when Gnome 1.3.9.1.6 comes out you have to do it all again:P
And all the distros come with outdated before they are even released. I remember the Gnome installation on my SuSE 6.1 installation were all months behind.
P.S. not knocking Linux or nothing cuz I love it myself:) but it's certainly not for my parents. They're happy with their iMac:)
I think the partial loss of Mulder really wont hurt the show all that much. The only thing that really relies on Mulder's presence is the whole conspiracy plot. I can't imagine those episodes working without Mulder being there to push it on. But other than that, the show could work very well with one of the two characters missing. Does anyone remember all those episodes a few years back that did not have Scully? Those were some very good episodes. There have been lots of great episodes that don't feature Mulder (maybe a small appearance on the phone). The show can work with one of them missing. What they really can't do is try and replace one of the characters. You can never really replace an essincal character.
Sure it doesn't play Quicktime 4, but it does 3. Nor will it play Real G2 or above format (only Version 4 and below). But that isn't Microsoft's fault. Apple and Real aren't stupid enough to license their latest formats to MS. Microsoft would make both their players obsolete.
But seriously, I like WMP. ASF format is actually pretty cool. It plays every major audio format, Divx;), all the common video formats (except the newest proprietary RM and QT formats), does not beg you constantly to buy the full version, and is much, much faster than either Real's or Apple's player. I don't see anything on Linux with that kind of support. If it had skin support, and actual playlist support, it might just be my default player.
. If you can block out advertisements, you are no longer paying. You are essentially stealing.
So is it stealing to switch channels or change radio stations durring commercials? Is it immoral to fastforward commercials on recorded TV programs? Or the real killer: should TVs with features that automatically mute commercials or change the channel for you be banned?
Of course, just like radio and TV commercials, I dont "block" them I usually just tune them out. Never even pay attention. I think most people have that sort of "viewing habbit".

I can't believe people still use this archaic image format. I have barely touched a GIF since my CompuServe days. It's almost as old and outdated as Microsoft BMP Bitmaps. Oversized files and proprietary compression format; horrific. GIF just can't compare to JPEG and PNG. You'll never see GIFs on any pages I create.
But still there they are, all over the frickin' internet. Even CmdrTaco uses them on Slashdot. I would think such a big open source advocate would have never touched the format with a 10-foot pole. It seems hypocritical.
Web browsers have suppored JPEG since the begining of time, and most of them have supported PNG for a while now. JPEGs have good image quality and excellent compression ratio. PNG will do all the animation stuff you need. Both are open formats. I really can't imagine why these GIFs are still around.
Does this mean they weren't planning on shipping with a modem previous to this? That doesn't make sense. They would be at an enourmous disadvantage against Dreamcast in the online gaming arena. Surely Sony realizes that online is the future of gaming. Even Microsoft realizes that. Microsoft has enough vision (!) to include an ethernet adapter with their upcoming console. Does the Japanese PS2 not have a modem? Did Sony not think online gaming has a future? Or is Sony one of those greedy companies that want you to waste $100 on their "special" PS2 modem? I find it hard to believe that Sony had not planned on shipping built in modem with their new console. Idiotic
This is stupid! Amazon previews it's music by letting customers downloading short mp2/mp3s or by streaming RealAudio. CDNOW has the exact same method of letting customers sample CDs. Hell, pretty much every music store on the internet has this exact same method. I know about 100 web sites that stream real audio (and there are hundreds I don't know), and there are 1000s that let you download mp3s. How the fsck can you patent the concept of downloading music. It will be a very dark day for the internet when you need a license from Intouch or whatever to let people download mp3s from your web site.
"When I was you're age, we played ANSI Door Games on MBBS Systems and I didn't hear anyone complaining! You and you're new fangled "Client/Server" games and you're 'Internet!'. Give me an MBBS system any day!"
But seriously. I remember countless wasted hours with that game, dialing into a BBS using a Terminal app... Made some good friends and bitter eneimes playing that. People took it so seriously. I hope development continues. One feature that I have wanted for a long time is a direct telnet feature. I believe TW2002 still has a bright future on the internet!
3Com make a great 8 port that I can stick in my bag. Its about 8"x4"x1/2". Not too shabby. Of course I also love my little D-Link 5 port. It's so cute (It looks a lot cooler than the 3Com), weighs in at only a few ounces, and I can stick it in my pocket:)
I am obviously not a lawyer, so I was wondering: Is it legal to trademark simple dictionary words? Coke is a real word. It's not just slang for cocaine or Coca-Cola. If I had a company called "Water", and had a web site "water.com" could I sue water.to for trademark infringement? Isn't the reason Intel named their chip the Pentium that they weren't allowed to trademark "586"? I think he has every right to that domain. English words should not be owned by companies.
How do you inforce something like this? Will all computers be forced to display their contence to the Rights Protection System? Or just public servers? And only enforced upon German computers? If it is on all computers, how do you force someone to install the software, or how do you stop someone from removing it if it comes preinstalled? Which OS will it run on? Does it block MP3 transfers on all protocols? MP3s on the web are hard to find even in the US, but on IRC I can find any song I want. How can the software tell if a song is copyrighted or not? This software's likelyhood to suceed. There are too many factors involved for it to efficently "protect your rights".
I have used Slackware since version 3.1. It was my first distrib and it has always heald a place in my heart. I have noticed over the years that Slackware hasn't changed much. The installation program hasn't changed in all these years. Installation is still kinda tricky. There isn't a real packaging system (tgz's don't really count). It doesn't come in a nice box with a nice manual and tech support. It doesn't come with a lot of software like the other distribs. There is no exclusive, Slackware developed software. It's a fairly bare bones, Do It Yourself distrib. Now that there is going to be more money involved, is all this going to change? Are we going to see a GUI installation, Slackware Package Manager, people working on Slackware software, a boxed distrib that one can pick up at a computer store, distribution on DVD-ROM with more bundled software, and other features some of the distribs with more money have? Slackware deserves to be right up there with the rest of them. Perhaps now Slack can get the recognition it deserves.
I have a 3rd edition PSX, released in 1997. Never had a problem with it. But i do know people who have had many problems with their earlier generation PSX's. It's amazing that it took Sony 3 times to get it right. Sony is generally known for their supperior quality.
One interesting upgrade Sony decided to also include with each upgrade to the PSX hardware was a major upgrade in the copy protection. Each edition made it more and more difficult to play import games on them. If I want to play an import on mine using a disc swap, I need to have reflexes of steel. But no matter how many editions the made, it was STILL possible to do a disc swap. That's one bug they just couldn't work out:)
but... I'm affraid that he has a point there. I use WindowMaker in conjunction with KDE. I must say its much more useable that Linux was when I first started using it 3 years ago. However, there are many normal tasks (that includes installing/compiling programs, changing system settings, starting modules, etc.) cannot be done within KDE, or are easier to do with a terminal. In fact a terminal is a vital part of both KDE (kterm), Gnome (gnome-terminal), and many windowmanagers (wxvt, e-term) have their own terminal emulator!
My point is that elimiation of command prompt necessity is what needs to be done to make Linux an in-DUH-vidual's OS of choice. Shell commands require have a brain cell, which most computer users simply do not. You don't need to use the DOS Shell in Windows 95 and NT, Mac OS doesn't even have one:) but with Linux its still a very intrigal part of the OS. I'm not saying remove it completely. Even when I use Windows I often do many tasks in a DOS prompt because I find it easier. Leave it there of course for people who can, but we need fully point and click configuation of everything, installation of programs and creation of icons with a single click (we're getting closer there), automatic installation and configuation of drivers, and no task that can only be done from a terminal before Linux will become a viable choice for Joe-KnowNothing
Will we ever be truely spared from the scourge of advertisers? They send junkmail to my home, all my email accounts, even junkmail at work. I can't hide anymore. They call me at home, they ask questions, they wont go away. Every time I fill out a web form for anything, I am just subjecting myself to further onslaughts of advertising. Forget big brother, we have a much bigger enemy: Corporate America. Even giving in to what they want, purchase of their product or service, leads to more forms, more questions, more advertising! No matter how many times I click the "No, I don't want to receive emails from you" they JUST KEEP COMING.
I have seen most of the X-Files episodes and I can say that without a doubt this was the worst episode, EVER. But I think perhaps the reason that we here at Slashdot hated it so much is because it hit so close to home. First it talked about the whole violence in games thing that goes on here constantly. Second, and more importantly, the way it portrayed computers so inacuratly really made me mad. What was the command to shut down the game? "Shift-Alt-Bloodbath"? WTF?
And remember the scene when the lone gunmen had the case off that computer talking about "Were gonna reroute power to set up a kill switch, but we can't get back online".
And "Jade Blue Afterglow" who went thru a "body scan" had an AI that jumped out of Phoebe's hard drive into the mainframe and took control of the game? Who wrote this script? Whoever it was obviously has never seen a computer.
This episode reminded me more of that UPN show "Deadly Games" (anyone remember that?) more than the X-Files. There was nothing paranormal about it, except perhaps the god aweful plot.
The show is very silly but it always cracks me up. It also has very deep character development. Be sure to check it out. (Make sure you start with season one so you can truely see the character development)
