  6. Re:Why? on Robots With Square Wheels? · · Score: 1

because you have to have a large enough counter-weight above to remove enough of the vehicle weight from the opposing wheels to allow them to rotate. At car sizes, you're basically talking about swinging another car above you - trying not to tip over - and all the while slowly stumbling along with a rough ride - and twice the weight you need to be pulling along.

As far as I can see, this would only be practical at smaller sizes, because of the simplicity of the design. Think small robots/vehicles.

I'd love to see a video of this in action, just to see how smooth it is - even with the foam demo they're working with. That also makes me think about wheel materials with different properties under pressure from different angles, so for e.g. the square wheel could be rigid when the force is perpendicular to an edge, but allow compaction when off-perpendicular (e.g. to 'round' out the edge) - that would make for a faster and smoother ride, certainly. You pretty much get that for free, come to think, since there's a great deal of wheel surface when the wheel is flat, but as it rotates you get less and less (though you're getting less weight). If it could compact some, you could perhaps get away with a lighter ballast up top.

Lastly, if the wheels on one of these were just a little out of their exacting misalignment, the ride would no doubt be drastically jerkier than it already is - that is if it weren't too far to prevent all function.

Good walkthrough, pretty thorough, though it's got one large failure (and some minor ones, mentioned in other comments)

It only analyzes the cost savings from a hybrid during the period you're paying off the car. There is no analysis given for the life of the vehicle, to determine how much you're saving in gas over the whole life of the vehicle. This is an obvious step, of course, but it wasn't taken.

In fact, it also didn't compare the different monthly payments, only the 30 month payment plan (shorter loans always cost you less than longer loans, but if you're going by "how much does it cost per month" numbers and not looking at the bigger picture anyway, this is worth exploring)

There are two* main reasons why diseases 'get milder' - evolution and antibodies.
evolution: There are multiple forms of the disease. Those that don't kill a host as quickly have more chance to be exposed to others and continue to exist, those that kill too quickly (for the most part) die out.

While you're correct that anyone can pop out a lvl 20 character, they have to unlock the skills and items and such in the roleplaying side of the game - so if I buy the game and roll up a PVP character, and play it against someone who's played through the RP side of things many times, they'll pretty much guaranteed win on equipment alone (armor reduces damage, items boost stats, etc.)

Still, limiting players to choose from only 8 skills definitely adds a level of "know thyself" and tactics that most games lack.

If you want to do the truly intelligent/creative a proper service, offer them opportunities to learn and develop on their own - but don't rush them through the school system so they can be tossed on their asses into the real world that much sooner.

Social development is damned important. I went to school with someone who was pushed through the school system here in America. Graduated college at 14. What did he end up doing? Working for his father - out of their pool house. Googling for him just nets a bunch of articles about how he graduated so early, and an article about how he was caught driving with a fake id (underage driving). His brother and cousins were pushed through a similar track. When I was in highschool, he still wanted to run around playing games like gradeschool. His development was stunted because of this path, and he wasn't exposed to anything to pique his curiosity beyond it.

Good news at least, is the money he's making in the real world will have a good 7 years more savings stocked up for retirement, though I don't know what he'll want to do when he hits retirement age. Maybe push his grandchildren through school fast, if he ever marrys and has children.

  17. Just bought a tablet on IBM ThinkPad X41 Tablet PC Reviewed · · Score: 1

I just bought a tablet pc this morning - Fujitsu T4000D. I'll now bore you with summary and details, skip down to the end for my actual point.

I found myself burning enough time on the pc at home, and getting pains from it, that I needed a different ergonomic solution. I've already got an ergonomic mouse, but it's not enough. I know for a fact it's just related to my posture/position, I have everything in place to fix it, but my habits destroy all attempts to rectify the situation. What am I doing when I'm at home, though? I'm relaxing, for the most part. Wasting time web surfing, watching anime, etc. All stuff I could do from a couch, that doesn't need a top of the line videocard.

I initially was looking at just a Sony U750p, but decided that 5" for $1300 used wasn't worth crap - I have a Zaurus C760, I've done the small screen - you do it for portability, not general purpose. This lead me to scour around looking at the possibilities, and I landed at basically the Fujitsu P1500D or the T4000D. Other mentionables along the way were the HP 1100 (no pressure sensitivity, but active screen - worst of both worlds), the motion computing ls800 (overpriced for the features, this really would have been perfect), and the m200 [ no integrated cd drive, less battery life, same weight ].

The 1500 was smaller and lighter - but I would end up paying the same price for it for fewer features. It, however, had a passive digitizer (you can use object - finger, whatever) - which would have made surfing arguably more comfortable/ergonomic than being forced to use the pen. I decided that if in the future, the digitizer on the one I got broke, I'd rather have the much more useful featureset of the 4000. The 4000 has the same screen as the m200 - 1400x1050 in 12.1", which should make horizontal scrolling a nonissue. All in all, my perception is that it will be an awesome experience.

Okay, enough of the sales pitch/validation (who doesn't get this way about a new piece of gear?). My point? Tablets are looked upon as the end-all be-all for vertical markets and rich kids, but I think that making many laptops convertible and adding a digitizer/touchscreen would be really damned useful. Most laptops can't be used in the lap at all, but if you're using it just to read / view / surf, you could use them in slate form just fine.

On top of that, Microsoft just loosened the restriction that tablets have active digitizers to run their tablet OS, so companies can add simply a hinge and touchscreen (in addition to rerouting everything through the hinge) to their models and be done with it - they don't need to make a billion usability software tweaks like Sony had to for their U, it's all builtin.
