At last! a useful and technically-minded response to the VIA announcement.
VIA have always been afraid of releasing their MPEG accel code. This release keeps this code hidden in a library. Why?
Perhaps: 1. Because the MPEG code cost them dollars to produce, and they don't want to give away an asset, OR 2. VIA ripped the MPEG code off from someone else (a GPL'ed somoene else, perhaps?) and are worried about being caught out.
For my money, this announcement simply confirms that 2. is indeed the case. That is, VIA have 'borrowed' this code, and are embarrassed by that.
I have found that a simple way of making geekdom understand these ideas is to substitute 'United States' for 'Microsoft' in most Slashdot discussions. US political/econoimic power and the abuse of that power in the world is directly analagous to Microsoft's worst habits.
If you are inside the system, it will look like freedom to innovate. For those outside, you are the 432.5kg gorilla.
I haven't seen a more lame extraction of urine today. Please bring down Terry Gilliam's animated foot on this one.
Just say No to satire, you know it makes sense.....

Of more interest, especially given This recent slashdot article about ARMlinux, is the effort to port linux to many Symbian devices.
Looking at the mail archives, running linux on some of these weird little devices is closer than ever. Is this phone of a similar architecture to the Mako etc?
If I were given the task of creating CyberPatrol, I imagine I would create a hash function that translated URLs to single bits in a map, then compress and publish the map alone. Anyone know why CP doesn't use something like this?

eff.org != eef.org
I love it!
