42% of our this chromosome is "bloatware". Poor Microsoft engineers can't be helped.. they've been battling this urge to include stuff in their code that does nothing and just takes up space. Kinda like salmon feeling the urge to return home to spawn.
Well, this should take care of some of the lawsuits against them.. "This bloatware, it's not our fault! Quit picking on us! We're products of our GENETIC HERITAGE and we can't be blamed for it! Help, help, we're being oppressed!"
You know, these planets are probably billions of years old and Slashdot is JUST NOW reporting on them? Whatm are submissions *THAT BACKLOGGED*? I thought this was suppsed to be a NEWS SITE!
Now that Microsoft is going down in flames, other companies are stepping up to the plate to fill the shoes of the next resident evil empire. As gore-and-violence-filled as the Quake series are, it's no secret that Carmack and his cronies are "hell-bent" on world domination.
Stop them now before it's too late.. boycott ID and their crappy products or next thing you know, Quake will come bundled as an integral part of your operating system and removing it will void your warranty!
But seriously, do you actually think you have the slightest fucking bit of privacy anyway? You can be as paranoid cloak-and-dagger as you want but if someone with more $$ than you wants to find something out about you, it's as easy as taking candy from a baby. Unless you're a militia member holed up in Montana who's never used plastic, been connected to the power grid, made a phone call, mailed a letter, used the internet, bought a car, voted, etc. I understand you're outraged about this but who gives a dick? It's a video card for crying out loud...
You're missing the point of the scientific method.. scientists don't believe in "proof" but rather *absence of disproof*. In other words, the way this experiment is designed is like so: astronomer predicts that if there's a planet in orbit around star A, then there will be light fluctuations in sync with the orbit of the planet. The spectra of these light spikes will be unlike that emitted by the star. If these spikes are not seen or if they resemble something other than the chemistry expected of a gas giant, we take this as the beginning of DISPROOF of the existence of the planet in question.
In fact, that's why you don't need a damn "boot floppy". Your shiny new Mac comes with a rescue CD that works every time, regardless of how you've abused the hard disk. You really want to trust your emergency boot to a fsking floppy when you have the choice of a CD? Get real.
Baby, Apple has allowed Bootable CDs for YEARS now, even before it was hyped as some big thing for the Wintel crowd. Hell, my favorite method to install NetBSD on old Macs is to plop in a custom boot CD containing just enough to get the thing running plus a separate partition containing the NetBSD install. Easy as pie and works on Macs from as early as *1990*
Maybe next time voters will vote Libertarian and endorse a society where people's right to buy (or not to buy) software of their choice is respected.
You Fail To Understand that this is the very right that is being assailed by Microsoft's business practices. They don't WANT YOU to have have the choice to buy a non-Microsoft product or use an electronic service that they don't derive profit from. As a card-carrying Libertarian you seem to welcome the intrustion into your field of choice of an institution that does not have your interests at stake. This is always so charmingly *naive* about Libertarians, esp. when they discuss the Microsoft case.
You know, Jon Katz has plopped himself down at his keyboard and written something here. And he does so with fair frequency. And he does so *fairly well* IMNSHO. It's always amazing to me how the criticisms of Katzie are rather inarticulate, often full of spelling errors, and obviously the rantings of someone who flunked English and can't stand to see another geek put more than 2 paragraphs on a page without getting the shakes. If you don't like Katz, filter him out. Malda has instituted a fabulous set of preferences for doing just that sort of thing. If you can't figure out how to set this up, maybe you can go ask your copy of the Microsoft Dancing Paper Clip.
Yes. AIDS is as natural as a baby's butt on a spring day. The merciless elegance of the HIV virus in the way it spreads and lies dormant and refuses to be purged is a PERFECT example of natural selection and adaptation. Just because it seems "mean" to you does not mean some guy with a white beard and a god complex whipped it up to punish you for sleeping around.
"Nature" has created nothing: it has no will with which to do so. There is NO difference between a cancer-curing compound I make at my bench and one that is part of the biochemical complement of another organism. The only reason that we look to "natural" sources is that the organic chemistry that occurs in a living organism is often an order of magnitude more complex than what we can do in the test tube.. we're just looking for anything that, in addition to the role it has evolved to fill, can also cure us from our diseases. It's very disingenous to speak of "nature" creating things.. there does NOT have to be a cure for cancer or AIDS or Parkinson's hidden deep in the mists of the Amazon Basin. If there's not, then there's not. We haven't been sold short by nature. However, there MAY be, among the thousands of species there, one who contains a chemical that could cure us of some of our ills.
You're wrong.. basically, what, if you can't sit around with the case open and have the processor cooled with yak fat, it's not the type of computer to run Linux on? The first thing I thought when I saw those is.. "hmm, that's a pretty decent price for a ruggedized notebook with a full-size keyboard. Let's wait to see if LinuxPPC will run on it..."
You're not the editor.. you wanna be an editor, dump a shitload of time and money into creating a new "News for Nerds" site..
Slashdot is pretty much about anything that's interesting and not just the latest AMD K-999 6.5-tittyflop, cryogenically-cooled, uranium-based Intel-compatible microprocessors..
I'm a nerd.. a bioengineer. This story interests me. It matters to me.. my wife and I are trying to have kids.
Hopefully as a shining example of how to take a decent idea and passable engineering and drive it kicking and screaming into the ground by adding features like flashy lights and purty pictures.
That's dickish of you since Apple has contributed money and development resources to the G4 development effort. Motorola wouldn't even be making desktop PPCs if it wasn't for the Apple market and IBM CERTAINLY wouldn't be.. they have their own fish to fry. Yeah, they're being "stupid" or "nasty" with the G3 upgrade block but in my opinion there's more to that story than we're hearing.. judgement withheld on that one.
People, if you haven't yet, READ THEM! David Brin doesn't just explore lifting up animals to intelligence but lays it over an entire galactic society where races compete to find and uplift lower species to sentience. He writes from the perspective of uplifters as well as upliftees and weaves one hell of a tale to boot. The 2 Uplift sagas are some of the best explorative sci-fi I've ever read.
Now it all becomes clear..

Stalin killed more people than the Holocaust
Therefore, the Holocaust was nothing but a friendly, good-natured Weiner roast.

The subject line says it all...
Yeah and it was all running on a really fscking souped up, modified NEWTON!!!!!! That's what they don't tell you!

God, I hope Linux is *never* on 99% of desktops. Haven't you learned a fscking thing from all of this?

Proof yet again that the US is crumbling under the mass of its bloated, self-serving, nonsensical legal system.. Fuck IDG, that's what I say.

Not to mention you can run a fairly advanced HTTP Server on that Newton Messagepad!

Hey don't be a fscking dick to the guy. He asked a legitimate question and you slam his "little project". What the sam-hill can YOU do that's cool?
Hopefully as a shining example of how to take a decent idea and passable engineering and drive it kicking and screaming into the ground by adding features like flashy lights and purty pictures.
According to the article, these security breeches can even be easily patched. Good thing if you're playing lots of football :-)
...on my iMac running NetBSD and LinuxPPC (depends on the day and what I'm a-doing as to which gets booted)
;-)
Get with the program, x86 folks

Bwaa-hahahahahhaaaaaaaa! ROTFLMOA!
Yow, so great you brought these books up!
