if you are getting freezes, i would take a good look at my cpu, it may be overheating, the cpu fan may be going bad, or the cpu could be overclocked to the speed that they sold you (it happens quite often). It could be the ram, but usually bad ram causes bad crashes, not lockups. another point to look at is your video card, make sure you got the latest drivers for it, and search the newsgroups for anyone reporting "weird" behavior with your model.
Thats just the obvious, but i have seen really weird things happen, for example, there was this time in the computer lab, where we bought some new computers and installed nt on them, and like clockwork, all the machines would lock up at the exact same time:) so we did some research and foung the culprit to be the ethernet cards needed to have bus mastering turned off in the registry due to the novel network.
Drivers are your worse enemy, they fight each other tooth and nail. word of warning, if you ever putting up a nt server, NEVER install 3rd party video drivers.. its too much of a risk, and always make your swap file a set size. i have seen many people computers crash with nt cause of either bad video or sound drivers, and heck, the swap file can crash your system good if it tries to grow and you are out of disk space:) also get a good defrag tool and run it. MS knows this, and so put defrag back in win2k.
well, i guess i rambled on enough on this, and boy did it get off topic.. but i make a living supporting computers... and most of them happen to have a microsoft based operating system.
okay, silicon breast implants do not kill. and it STILL has not been proven that the silicon implants were bad for you. but lawyers got a hold of the story and ran with it, and before you can say "jack rabbit" everybody was sueing for money.
and software bugs in computers can kill you very easily. i see you don't realise how much computer systems run our little mud ball of a planet. take for example a hospital, check out how many critical systems they have that run embedded software. let someone leave bugs in them, and watch the body count pile up, oh, of course it may not happen, since its less code, and it is tested damn well before it can even be put into use. but the potential for it is there. and think about the systems that is being used now by doctors to send your medical history to the pharmacy for you to get your prescription, and if the wrong drug or doseage gets prescribed.. well my friend, it was nice knowing you.
Mann, i will hold off buying a real 3d card for a while... i recently got my ATI 3D Rage Pro AGP to do pretty good 3d in linux. enough to tide me over for a 3dfx or a matrox... was actually thinking about a tnt based card, now i know where my money is NOT going.
In high school, there were only a handful of teacher that i respected, and those were the ones who treated me as a person. not as a child with no opinion. The rest could go to H E double hockey sticks. In college, the same thing, some professors made me sick to be in their class, others were a joy to be in. My C++ professor was one of my most respected educators ever. why? cause when i did the work, and he saw my potential, he gave me more work to do, and spent the extra time showing all the cool stuff that could be done with a programming language. Plus he wasn't afraid to learn, he was constantly taking courses to advance his knowledge of computer science. And he was the first person to introduce me to unix. I wonder if he is okay, i should try to keep in touch with him.
I second that, god, i would pay good cash for a stand alone browser, that looks good (not you opera), and is faster than greased lightening, or some similar fast thingee and is cross platform, and did i mention that it is JUST a web browser?
ALSO, it has to have a REAL preferences menu, where you can disable ANY HTML type, (blink comes to mind), and ANY feature in the browser, and can be completly controled from the keyboard if need be.
i would love to take that challeng, but i just purchased a second cel 366 for my board, and i am buring it in on another OS, so when it dies or locks up, it doesn't affect my real OS.
Maybe in a few days or weeks when i get them both back up to 550 (thats where my first used to hit easily) i will put abit's money where your mouth is... or something like that.
Well maybe Terrorist should Open Source their AntiGravity machines! You don't weant to float slowly into space when they turn one on in your town, now do you? heck i want to be hurled into space at near light speeds! and i would like to hack at their machines and retun the specs back to them so that they can hook it up...
And if you say otherwise... where do you live again?
The mirrors started syncing it since noon Central time yesterday, i snagged me a copy of the iso by 4pm, and the installer is much better than in 6.1 This is what 6.1 installer should have been like. They finaly made an option for you to use fdisk instead of stinky diskdruid during the gui installation.
could have fooled me, lets see what past articles we can find about redhat on slashdot:
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=99/10/02/1410 221&mode=nested --- Red Hat Releases Version 6.1
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=99/09/06/2018 257&mode=nested --- New Red Hat Beta Available
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=99/04/26/1619 249&mode=nested --- RedHat 6.0 is Out
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=98/11/01/1125 252&mode=nested --- RH5.2 hits the Wire
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=older/9805260 81238&mode=nested --- RedHat v5.1 hits the Wire
do you see a trend here? every redhat release, including betas HAVE been anonunced on slashdot before... one can only draw conclusions why its not being anonunced anymore...
Funny you should mention that there will still be posts on other companies, yet yesterday i submitted an article on RedHat 6.2beta being released, and surprise surprise, the article isn't up... one can draw many conclusions from that, but i will be a bigger man and pretend its because it got lost in the pile of submitted stories.

"Oh don't sell the welfare roll so short dood! They keep hip-hop artists in cash."
I didn't know trailer park trash listened to hip-hop:) get your facts straight, if you going to imply that mostly blacks are on welfare, then make sure you know your figures, since more whites are on welfare.
and do you normaly buy stuff before check for compatability?
if you are going to install an OS, you ask yourself question slike these:
1. is all my hardware supported to some useable degree?
2. can i get applications on that OS to provide me with the services that i need?
3. is my time and money invested in this project worth it in the long term?
4. how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?
stuff like that
who reboots to change their color depth?

Damn, i can't even remember his name now....
Its nice to say "we" when you are speaking about yourself.
Yeah, damn Blizzard, they better make a port for my OS that i am writting for my TI81, cause everybody is using it, even IBM is porting stuff to it.
See how stupid you sound? now stop saying "we" when you are speaking for yourself. You make me sick.
Yep, i went to Erasmus Hall High in NYC and that school was the pits! i hope they put more funding in that school. And other high schools.

Funny thing is that it kills my Netscape 4.7 in Windows also.
So basicaly, you targeting a distro at people who are going to have to visit your site with IE, or have to download mozilla to see it?
no comment on the no comment...
how hard confusing can it be to go to a projects website to read what an application does? i guess its easier to just sit there and make assumtions...
:)
its called "choice," if you don't like it, thats also your "choice"
isn't that great? you don't pay a penny for it, yet people complain about how so many things there are...
/me shakes his head
(if only slashdot supported irc commands)
i say Kernel 2.4 for president! who is with me?
Oh my GOD! they killed kernel!
You BASTARDS!!!!

ah, but do you want Nvidia to release the code so that you can make their card better? or to make it work under any OS?
Once you can answer that question, you can answer any question.
don't make me laugh little boy.
litestep is nice and all, but it is VERY weak, when compared to most *nix WindowManagers...
When you grow up, come back to the party, until then, play with your toys.
