I just got AOLs 4.0 version of "the internet and more!" So which is newer? how many internets are there? man, this computer thing is real complicated. Thank god i will have my computers off so that the y2k virus that is spreading doesn't infect my computer and makes it come alive and crash my windows, or does it crash your car? Man, i am can't wait to finish this time machine that i am working on in my basement, with it i can go back in time and buy a ton of MS stock, and be real rich! i can make it go up to a few hours into the future, but i can't make it go backwards. Oh well, maybe when i upgrade the OS on the built-in computer system in it from windows95 to windows 2000, i can get it to work correctly.
shouldn't a benchmark for a webserver "not" be running on the server that is being benchedmarked? I should think that you should have a workstation that contains the benchmark software that is connected to the server, and then it loads the hell out of the server, better yet, get multiple workstations running the benchmark software on the network to strain and bring the server to its knees. Now that is how a server should be tested. And in that case, the platform the benchmark software is running on will be irrelavant, as tcp is tcp.
what?!? where? oh god, noooooooooooo!!!!!!! when did this start to happen? i can't believe that i did not notice that there has been a big reduction in the amount of sunshine. Damn, what will i do now?
oh the humanity............ why doesn't someone do something!!!!!
People are people no matter what OS they use, and because of that they will act the way they will on whatever OS they use. The real problem lies in the "my penis is bigger" syndrome. Where everyone wants everyone to think they got the best OS. Now, that is not really a bad thing, the bad thing comes from when you start to bring others down for using another OS. I just tend to ignore the idiots who spout "linux everywhere." There is a saying that no one tool can do everything, because by trying to become the "ONE" tool, is impossible, that is why folks who are specialist cary around very large tool boxes, and have tons of smaller toolboxes to do different jobs. anyway, i guess i started to go off on a tangent. To get back to the point, the folks who shout the loudest in here are just folks who have installed the OS cause its "cool", and "hip" and have not really done anything with it. If you look at the programmers and the network administrators in here, you would realise that these guys usually know what they are about because they have been exposed to multiple platforms and multiple operating systems. Most of the regular linux folks i have meet are very friendly, in fact, most are willing to go out of there way to help new users as long as you are actually willing to learn some of the basics for yourself and do not want to be handfed.
so, i don't think that the AC of Slashdot are an indication of the the so called "linux community." and anyway, why would you use or not use an OS because of who else is using it? My belief is that you should use either what you can afford, or the best OS/Platform for the job.
man, if i was was stuck with a flat dull gui like what the mac has, and wasn't able to change it, and had to see it every day of my life on every computer that i came across, i would just shoot myself. Better yet, i would go out and kill everyone else first, then kill myself.
There are two cars on the market, car X, and car Y. car X costs an arm and a leg. car Y is free if you are willing to go to the factory and pick up the parts and assemble it in your garage (the instructions to do so are also free and comes with it.) You can also purchase car Y for a small fee from car dealers who assembled it themsselves and provide some basic support.
Car X needs alot of gas to even get out of the driveway, not to mention you constantly pay the manufacture to fix (upgraded) problems that shouldn't have been there in the first place, plus it can't drive for long periods of time without suddenly going off the road and killing who ever is in the passenger seat. You also need alot of mechanics at hand to fix it when things go wrong. It can only drive on certain roads, and tend to not see or ignore other cars on the road. It comes without some of the parts that you need to make the car work, but its okay cause there are tons of stores that will sell those parts to you for a "small fee."
Car Y needs very little gas to run on, and comes with all the parts and tools that the car can ever need. there are few stores that sell parts for the car, but you can order parts from other car owners who will give it to you for free. It can drive for long distances without having to pull over and give its system a rest, and can drive on almost any road, and if it can't, someone somewhere is working on a way to get it to go down that road. when it does breakdown, it can be fixed remotely, hell, you can even drive the thing remotly. It gets along with all the other cars on the road, and does not try to run them off the road (like some other car that i shall not mention).
Now, because alot of people already own Car X, and they wasted a ton of money in buying and maintaining car x, it will actually cost them more over a period of time to stick with car x than to switch to car y. If they cannot see this fact, then they have been riding in the passenger seat of that car for too long.
i did not know that:) i could have sworn it was March 12th but what do i know? i just came through one of those quantum portals that my da works on in his spare time in the basement. God alone knows what universe i am in now.
explain to me what is going on at "Ask Slashdot?" is it that only articles from certain people get selected? or do articles get picked at random? or do most articles just get deleted. I have submmited many worthy articles that i believe to be exremly important to the linux community, yet they do not get posted. However this article get picked instead... I do believe that Slashdot should be run however Taco man feels to run his ship, but don't play games and pretend to care, cause after seeing this particular article among others getting displayed, it makes me wonder.
well, if they put the brain of the pig in the body of the man, what would you get? It still looks like a man, but its not.. the heart is necessary, but it is not the brain, the brain is where you reside.
did your system happen to work before the new lib came out? well if it did, then why are you upgrading? If you don't developers who are working for free to improve the software that you use, then stop using the software, and go use something else that only get upgraded once a year, and that you have to live with all the bugs and lack of features till the next release that you have to pay through your nose to afford. so, take a hint. no one is forcing you to use better software.
"GNOME is designed to be portable to any modern UNIX system. Currently, it runs on Linux systems, BSD variants, Solaris, HP-UX, and Digital Unix. In the future, it will be included in Red Hat Linux, and other Linux distributions such as Debian GNU/Linux and SuSE Linux."
also:
"Because GNOME supports many programming languages, including Ada, C, C++, Objective-C, TOM, Perl, Python, Guile, developers are able to write GNOME programs in their language of choice."
now i don't want to be an ass about this, but get your facts straight before you spout...
i could swear that i read that article a long time ago, just that this time the only thing that seemed different was the recent announcement. other than that, it read almost word for word of a previous article.
no, you misunderstood what i said. I was trying to say that instead of spending money on manned missions, they could create AI robots that can do space exploration. They would be easy to replace, cand withstand hostile environment, and can have a spend longer periods of time in space than the human body can withstand. It just makes sense to use robots for space missions.
it intresting that they could only get 30 mins of battery life out of it, hope they can up it to around a few hours, and then find a way to allow it to recharge itself. What would be even better is if they could create a fuel system based on algae of some similar small life form, therby allowing the robotic fish to replenish its fuel source by it self. Now if only NASA would wise up and ivest some money into robotic AI and technology instead of wasting time with manned missions.
in the directory, there are two particular rpms that i would like to know what they do. the first is: kernel-BOOT-2.2.1-3.i386.rpm and the other is: kernel-smp-2.2.1-3.i386.rpm
i guess that the smp rpm is one with smp support already compiled in, but what does the other one do?
arn't they linked against the newest glibc? if so, then if will screw your sytstem up something royal. anyway, let me get it anyway... i hope they have the src rpm to it, that way i can link it against my libs... so i believe....
People don't seem to realise the capability of AI right now. You see, you don't need "human like" AI to do a scientific mission. In fact, humans cannot gather the sort of information that is needed in any space mission. Did you know that alot of systems practically run themselve right now? and most of the software was based on 5 to 10 year old technology? Trust me, if NASA spent even a fraction of the money that they currently spend on shuttle missions in R&D of AI robotics that can think and react on their own, you would be surprised that we even thought about ever using humans to explore anything. The human mind may be one of the most amazing computer system ever designed, but when it comes to exploration, it has its limits. As we decide to explore furter into space, manned missions would be a waste of time. Robotic probes are the only way to do deep space exploration and research. We may as well start using them now, insteading of waiting till later on.
No one seems to realise that a manned mission is foolish, if not a big waste of money. Its true you can learn alot from designing systems to support human life, but when you do that you lose the chance to increase the knowledge in AI, and alternative methods to get things done. NASA seems obssesed in "manned" missions. If they want to test their theories out, they can get together with some of the best software and hardware experts, ship them off to different locations on our planet and get them to design robotic systems that can work and adapt to these conditions. Then send a coulpe of the robots on to mars or whatever planet they choose to send them on. I am sure that if they can extract enought fuel from the martian planet to get the astronauts back home, they create enought fuel to propel some small robots for a very long time. Couple this technology with alot of other technology that NASA has been fuxing around with and you can have a network of semi-intelligent robots scouring the planet surface within a maximum of 5 years and collecting more information than any manned mission could ever hope to accomplish in 50 years.
Its so ironic that you can ues this site that "sucks" to inform others about YOUR opinion. Think about it, if this site "sucked" so much, why are you still reading it? or even posting to it? are you a drug addict? or did you just eat lead paint as a child? This is so funny that it is not even funny anymore. Its like some great politician going on a television show to tell everyone to stop watching that television show.

you alwasy make sure that you have a moron as the vice-president. this will prevent anyone from trying to kill the president. or so i believe.
remember that starcraft registry incident blizzard had a few months ago?
that should help them up onto the charts

I wonder if that shotgun i just purchased is Y2K compliant, damn, i would not like it to stop working when the shit hits the fan on the 1st.
