Why not just have an auxiliary memory bus with another of these modules in a removable cartridge/card/memory stick and have the CPU sync them for the backup? It would certainly be faster than transferring that amount of data in a linear fashion.
Rainbow has been making USB dongles of this type for years. The key generation/signing happens in the token. It wouldn't help the boot sequence without rewriting the BIOS, but it meets the criteria of removable without exposing keys.

Keep in mind that Microsoft charged companies twice that much to beta Win2K. This is something many people forget when mentioning that Apple is charging for beta software...
