  8. Rosetta extension? on Run Windows Applications Natively in OS X? · · Score: 1

I see a lot of comments about how Apple might roll WINE into the OS, and how hard it is to implement the Microsoft API's.

What if Apple's plan is to have anyone interested in Windows compatibility install Windows with BootCamp, then extend Rosetta's functionality to call the Windows libraries that it can now access? Sure, it will cost you the price of a Windows license, but the programs can be run from inside OS X, so you don't lose your Spotlight, Dashboard, and Front Row (etc.) functionality? This would be like the Classic environment, where there was enough of MacOS 9 running to support the app through OS X. This type of thing has already been done with Windows' NTFS drivers in Linux.

I'm just guessing like the rest of you, but it's a tantalizing possibility...

I had this problem too (phantom "back" button) and asked my boss to buy me an MX510. It didn't have the "Executive" feature of being cordless, but it still had all the buttons I cared about and it's a nice red that stands out on my desk. He had no problem with that.

Maybe you should just ask? If you're worth the $X/per hour they pay for your time, then it's probably worth $50 once in a while to keep you happy.

This mouse was indeed on sale at CompUSA in Bloomington, MN yesterday for $99.99. I picked up the package myself and looked it over. The tilting scroll wheel seems nice (Microsoft got there first, though) and the box does indeed proclaim the optical mouse dead (aren't lasers optical?). I couldn't tell if the battery was replaceable like my MX700 because of the security plastic holding the demo mouse down. It does not appear to use Bluetooth, but looks very exciting. Maybe I'll get one when they're on sale. For now, the MX700 will have to do.

I'm in the same situation. I loved it at first. After I had owned the drive for a month, I noticed that the hard drive heads would park loudly at night. The amount of time before this happened seemed random, but it always seemed to happen between 2 and 4 AM. I know from experience that this noise is not expected (and usually ends in disk failure), so I was very unhappy.

I only know this is happening because the PC is in my bedroom (apartment living) and I'm a light sleeper. After a week of it, I promptly bought a Maxtor drive of the same capacity and ghosted over to it. I have no such problem with the Maxtor. The IBM drive is in the parts drawer.

Bit of a waste for a then-$100 drive. I can't rely on it, so it's not used. Needless to say, I haven't had such an immediate failure with any other manufacturer, so I'm not likely to pick IBM's drives in the future.
