Oh we would -so- be going nova right now. (ref: 3001).
I'm sorry, but clarke has to be on crack when he thinks we could stop an AI such as that with a virus or 5,000. I mean, hell. If its going to emulate, i'd assume it's going to run it in a seperate domain. Then the worst that could happen is it gets a cold and turns a little grey.. right?
I'm telling you, the last thing you need is a pissed off, uberpowerful monolith. I bet it was designed by a woman.
IMHO the slashdot moderation system is broken - I say we call for a review. We make a loud enough noise, they cant ignore us (but they can lock us all out.. DOH!)
(Moderators: Admittedly offtopic. Use your moderation points for something useful.)
We're too biased IMO. Who knows? Life may be able to evolve in billions of different ways, using processes we haven't yet discovered. Im not a evolutionary scientist, of course. But 80 years or so ago the thought of life on Europa or Titan would have seemed far-fetched. Now its a very real possibility. 80 years ago microbes could never live on the moon. The surveyor probe lens recovered by Apollo 12 at the Ocean of Storms proved that it was possible.
I do agree with you on the ego thing. I've met -so many- linux zealots who can't back their claims of superiority with one fact, yet, they hate windows.. for no reason except the stereotypical "It crashes all the time!" and "Microsoft is a Facist Monopoly bent on world domination!". I forgot who said it, but i like him or her: "Open Source; Closed Minds".
It was a good idea. The problem was the application - Stallmanism ruined the OpenSores image, in my mind. I will never recommend a linux solution where a "Established" solution could take its place. Partially because of technical reasons ; but mostly because i wouldn't want to risk having someone adminning them who's too busy keeping their thumb up their arse to care about the company.
Slashdot is flawed, fundimentally. Unfortunately, its kind of fun. Screaming 14 year olds, as is said, having pissing contests over l33tness when they wouldnt know the difference between ATDT and ATH0, or SysV and BSD if it got up and shoved a clue by four up their output port. Hey, its better than sitting at work staring at the birds frying in the satellite transmitters on a slow day!
If microsoft can, by some complex reorganization of their development and review process, make their code have the same, or less, incidence of critical issue as, say, Linux (I swear I didn't choose that just because its the godhead of this entire forum), What would we do?
Honestly, and not trying to troll. What will everyone here do if microsoft ceases being the evil empire? What if they can pull this off, and find some middle ground with the government? I said before, in a much earlier post, that most religions have an antagonist; What happens if we lose ours? Will/. topics get more sensational?
MS Press Release:

Personally, I say good for microsoft. Microsoft, right now, is an intergral part of so many organizations, and admittedly they have security problems; They could use the positive PR. They could also deal with less -unfounded sensationalism- nonsense from the peanut gallery (note, this does not mean the founded, intelligent, objective news items which from time to time may appear in the comments section.)
Just my $0.02, Refundable with a $2.00 restocking fee.
Larry would likely end up in prison for some of the inflammatory stuff he says, if he weren't one of the richest asshoerr guys in the world. Imagine his mouth vs. a cop, judge, jury..
Hell, i'd like to see a Gates vs. Ellison boxing match on pay-per-view, as long as the money didn't go to either of them (and they had to match 1000 to 1). Seeing as they are both a little lanky, it could be interesting. Just let them use physical equivilants of business tactics.
I'm sure oracle has to struggle to meet the goals spewed larry's big mouth. A "The president just said WHAT on national tv" type response, i.e. NASA in the 60's.
I just want to say.. Thank you.

Yeah, I agree, but i wasn't about to tell slashdot that. I'd be moderated down to -5, Meta-troll.
My company uses EMC, Legato Notworker (ugh!), and Veritas Cluster Server/First Watch/File System for our needs. Linux isn't allowed in our organization by our investors, and everyone down the line follows that philosophy.
In the world of stock prices not in danger of being delisted, Some investors, like the ones who invest in my company, may not like the idea that you're mirroring your critical data with a relatively new, and "unheard of" filesystem. Be very careful. Remember, in this economy it's not about what you believe in; its what your investors want you to believe in. The political metalayer of the OSI model has become the most important. Then again, your data may not consist of customers financial data in bulk quantities. YMMV.
If politics and such are important in your company, Look into "real" technologies such as EMC (Sym or Clariion), Hitachi, or IBM storage, even if you have no real intention of buying. Make a brief outline as to why these systems would not be cost-effective, or fit your needs, just so your investors will know you put some thought into it.
I'm not trying to troll, i'm just offering information you may want to consider. Again, YMMV
It's a shame more thoughtful ask slashdots get rejected 2 seconds (literally) after being submitted. Note i didn't say better.. just something not quite as obvious.
Jumpers? Dime a dozen. literally. Hit your local radio shack.
I preferred dip switches. To me, they seemed so much more.. logical.
Substance P is the chemical your brain releases to produce the "ouch". A neurotransmitter, Similar to Seratonin, Dopamine, etc.
I don't know if anyone has made an inhibitor for it yet - or if its even possible; im not a neuroscientist. But I can think of situations where it would be a boon.
Just to add to my own comment.. I think the defining moment of my existence as a sysadmin was when i was working for a large national company.. we had just gotten a brand new server room, and all my servers were in there, turned on, etc. I placed my thumb on the scanner, entered my PIN, and stepped in.. The lights were off..
And all around me, were red, blue, green, amber lights.. some blinking, some steady. I felt so inspired.
You get to see the making of blacklights, the concepts behind such things as the MCP and I/O Tower, and the physics behind that scanner-laser thingie! and don't forget the touchpad desktop, still coming in the not-so-distant future. Also, see a light tank whup the hell out of an Talibani (?) battle light-donkey.
As an added bonus, the case will come in a limited-edition blacklight-glo scheme. Removing the DVD will involve de-rezzing the case.
"segue" is a verb [imparitive, intransitive] or a noun.
"Segway" is a proper noun as of a few weeks ago. Don't worry timothy, i suck at grammar too.
Speaking of backtracking, allow me to segue (teehee) into this offtopic question: Does anyone have any good techniques for backtracking, through google or otherwise, your old slashdot posts? it seems you can search by everything else but you're own name.
You know, between that knob, some normal analog switches, randomly blinking lights, LED displays, a dremel, and a few flat panels, my cube at work is going to be undergoing a major renovation soon.:)
"See this knob? I turn it, and our CRM goes faster." "This switch disconnects all users" "This button redirects all bandwith to my workstation" "This blinking red light is.. just a blinking red light" "Oh.. the blinking blue light? It means one of the executives is donwnloading porn. yes, i know its on solid."
I like the suggestion someone else made.. Analog VU meters for Bandwith.. Except i'd want some form of steam actuator on it, for when bandwith approaches maximum.
mofoinasciiartistwannabetroll...er HI! me again. Just wanted to ask the inverse question. What if you want your computer to be big, frightening looking, with lots of blinkinlights?
I mean, granted, a modern minitower is nice.. but two or three lights just arent enough.
I therefore start the campaign for more blinkinlights.
Sun Systems are nice. Large (You have the "Refrigerator Cabinet", "End Table" and "Ottoman" form factors). Adequate blinking lights (ESPECIALLY on 6500's!)..
I want my computer to have lots of lights. I don't care if they do anything. I want my keyboard to sit in the middle of a console with a lot of dials, gauges, digital readouts, switches, buttons, knobs, and things that go "PING!" (a ping light WOULD be good, to think of it.) I want to see my network utilization on a graph led. I want to see my processor usage there, too. I want to see a red light come on each time some PFY discovers WinNuke, or someone tries to NIMDA me. I want to have one of those covered red buttons that may or may not launch a thermonuclear device. I want screens that go "zeeeeeeeerp, zeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerp" as text scrolls across it.
I already have three monitors on my desk. Wires strewn everywhere. But what else do i have? An Ultra 5, A beanie baby, and a dell optiplex. And a Dell Keyboard (at least i makes those satisfying *click*'s.). I WANT SWITCHES, dammit.
You're right.. At that point, wouldn't a newsgroup be more appropriate?
On SunManagers i used to get about 100 a day on heavy days, and that was a LOT for me to handle. I ended up creating a new e-mail account specifically for mailing lists.. Between the SM list, Legato NotWorker, Veritas...
Just a side comment: Slashdot looks *SO MUCH BETTER* in this blue color. When will we get the option to theme slashot, like other weblog engines have?:/
Lets start with Miss Cleo. Then my employer.. (But i take no part in the spamming! none! I just run our website! I even refused to set up a spam server!) We can of course fund this operation with low-interest credit cards that i can acquire once i rid myself of this debt i built up buying so many pr0n site subscriptions. We can use X10 cameras to log our experiments.
Nah. They'd just multiply using the minerals available in the water.
They would then infiltrate our cities water supplies. Through self-modification they would be able to integrate themselves into our brains. They would then take over the cities, and the states, then finally the planet. It would happen so slowly, but so quickly, nobody would notice. You see, its all part of my tremendously ingeneous plan to take over the world! (hides mouse ears)

AOL/TW is, IMHO, a bigger threat now. They control major gateways to information, and can readily manipulate news and, in turn, ideas. THATS danger.
Objectiveness is key.
