Great point. Though i haven't had time to read a book recently, let alone tack one to the end of my ever-growing to-read list (this is the time of year when i go through my technical manuals again).
Its nice to see that at least a -little- high-level thinking is going on here, and not just a kneejerk reaction to the M word. In the real world, i don't see MS taking that sort of risk.. granted, they could afford to settle out of court with everyone who puts their CC information into the system if it DID get cracked and wasn't translucent.. wink wink, nudge nudge..
Sounds like RHIC. RHIC will pull in a contractor at $cheap, work them until they display their gross incompetence, and then replace them with someone else, after making a 50-100% premium on what they're paying you. Of course, somehow, they stick with the company to do it all again.. RHIC is the one consulting firm I would just not enjoy working for. Ever.
I feel compelled to point out i've been typing pretty much every day for the past 10 years. I dont' do that home-row nonsense.. my fingers float over the keyboard, my hands move a lot, my writs stay straight usually, as my 'angle of attack' is crooked. I've completely stopped thinking when i type, so, obviously, it works. And i can go at about 90 WPM.
It messes me up to no end when i get on the "natual" keyboards.. they cramp my style, and my wrists.
The trick is to get people to read the article. Making it sound like they're coming after -you- is a pretty decent way to do it, right? Slashdot uses the same technique..
I just got a job last monday after four long months of searching. Same situation as last time, my employer had me over a barrel, but he chose not to screw me. I actually got a decent salary, and the job was based on experience & certifications. What got me in the door? Sheer determination. 2 years of it. I interviewed with this company before, and kept my eye on it. I've wanted to work here for quite some time, and i plan to stay for a long time. But i do plan to have one thing before i leave:
At least an associates degree.
I have a long way to go. at least 3 years worth of work. The luck i encountered in getting this job was quite amazing. I could have been looking for ages more and never found a job. Sysadmins are a dime a dozen, and, unfortunately, there are a lot of talentless hacks out there taking the jobs from the more qualified and skilled, based only on the fact that they'll work for $15,000 less.
What hurt me the most in the job search is some of these talentless hacks (I knew some of them, so im not just making this up) had degrees.. but absolutely no skill. IMHO, you need all the qualifications to be [easily] successful in todays job market - Certifications, Formal Education, and Experience. Not to say you can't get far just by trying reaaaaly hard...
Keep in mind all you unemployed people.. once you find a job, its back to 12 hour days, weekend work, and after-hours studying!
(Whats up with that anyway? Why is it in the computer industry people expect the standard work day to be 10-12 hours?)
One should not take this development as a sign that bacteria are doing things they shouldn't be doing. It's a matter of natural selection- antibiotic applied to colony, most members die, some with resistance to the drug survive. It's the same process, simplified, that most likely gave rise to multicellular organisms, worms, fish, amphibians, corals, mammals, and ultimately humans. While it's certainly worth noting, it's not like it isn't expected. Life changes. Life evolves. Life moves on to new forms.
And we're now here because the dinosaurs used antibacterial soaps. Then an early pre-mammal sneezed..
I do use antibacterial soap in events where im touching or may have touched something EXTREMELY contaminated - such as the cat box. However, usually, just soap & water..
But i've traveled on two assumptions here, that most AB external use products are pretty much absolutely bacteriocidal:
1: Anti-bacterial soap is more or less un-neccesary, as, supposively, soap washes away may contaminants, AND, the drastic change in ph should kill much of whats left?
2: Some antibacterial products simply kill through simple chemical properties. Drop alcohol on something and dehydrate it... i think it would die.
[Warning: The above are assumptions based on observations. I haven't the time nor the will to look it up right now. I don't know much about triclosan, except that it may contain dioxin, and that it can take up to two minutes to do its job]
I'd say the greater danger is the use of antibacterial drugs.
1: Use a pro duct called "Advanced Registry Tracer" [search for it, you'll find it] to see the registry change made when you modify it from the Power options > Advanced control panel applet (granted you're using 2000 or XP). On a side note, ART is a kickass tool. There are many handy little uses for it.
2: If you are in a domain, simply assign a startup script. Execute a batchfile which updates the registry via a.reg file. Simply drop a token file out somewhere and run an if loop to prevent it from having to do it each and every time. If you're not in a domain, hire cheap help...
I feel compelled to dignify that with a response, even though i know i shouldn't.
Nobody should have undue control over anothers life, at least in the aspect of what is morally right or wrong. That said, to quote oliver wendell holmes, my right to swing my fist ends where your nose begins. Interpret as you will.
IMHO, and in my interpretation, the USA was meant to be Government free from the control of religion. Instead now it is Religion in key control of the government - I think it's a given that religion is the driving force behind most of the philisophical and moral decisions of the USA. A few key, token decisions notwitholding.
The USA is already too far gone. All we can hope for now is a revealing post mortem. Our only hope is the next generation, sickened by the current.
I think my favorite quote is "those that would sacrifice essential liberty for temporary security deserve neither liberty nor security" -- Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790), Letter to Josiah Quincy, Sept. 11, 1773.
That would be more appropriate. Then our currency would have a static value again. Then again, i am not an economist.. i have no idea what the consequences of going back to a gold standard would be, aside from there would be less money to go around.
In reference to your sig.. Shouldnt the past tense of "shit" be "shat" ?
Yeah, the line ends about three months back thataway. You can get "Skip ahead free" cards if your college educated with gobs of certs, 10+ years of experience, a great skill set and a willingness to work for $cheap. You can get a job right off the bat if you have a TS/SBI. SO MANY FSCKING PEOPLE want security clears right now. I want to smack half of them. It's more or less a military-only club out there.
Do the dying dot-com thing and take home the switches and rouers you need. Replace them with 3COMs & Linsys's (Linksii?) from Best Buy.:)
The rule of thumb i follow is only upgrade your bios if it
a) fixes a bug you are experiencing or b) adds functionality you need.
I've had to upgrade my BIOS all of twice in about 4 different motherboards I've owned, once to add processor support, once to fix a power management bug.

I noticed that at the end of "Gods and Monsters", Boris Karloff's name had a (tm) beside it.. i wonder if this has some sort of precedent behind it?

Your giving people credit for that 1% thing... well, okay, maybe porn.. but most of that sucks, as most are duplicates.. err, i've heard, at least.
on another topic.. The first two posts in this article have sigs that mention pee. im scared.

Sorry, but they probably will need to stand at the rear of the "I need a job" line, like the rest of us.
However, i do admire their dedication to their jobs. It's either customer loyalty or "Hell no. Not again. HELL NO." Mentality of losing a job.
:)
