  1. Re:Hard to tell on Razorfish Sued For "Shoddy Web Site" · · Score: 1

A large percentage (sometimes a majority) of the people hitting a site are going to be AOL users. I doubt that a client would sign such a contract either.

AOL isn't going away. Part of building web sites is making the fancy stuff work on whatever the site vistitor is running. :\

(The developer's opinion doesn't mean squat if it's already in the contract.)

  2. Ummm... on Soldier Of Fortune: Must Be 18 To Play · · Score: 1

I've never played Soldier of Fortune...

Neither have I, therefore I am not qualified to comment on whatever violence it contains.

    I'll say this, though:

However animals are treated in the real world, they are not treated that way because of SOF, or any other video game. Animals were raised in production environments and slaughtered in factories, and stray animals wandered the planet, long before video games came around.

  3. Respect my authoritay... on Senate Judiciary Committee On Digital Music · · Score: 2

As the guy with the $20 who makes that whole supply chain possible. You know, the *consumer*.

Napster is a pretty damn efficient way to find and evaluate music that I want. I'm sorry that Lars and the RIAA aren't in control of that, but tough. It's my money.

Napster found an easy, cheap, fast way to distribute music online, and in doing so, woke up the music industry...which had been sitting on its collective butt.

When the music industry gives me a way to purchase music that's as easy as Napster, we'll talk.

  4. Re:Hey, I also heard that on Apple, Pixar And Disney To Merge? · · Score: 1

At which point, the universe would probably blue screen, and we wouldn't have to worry about all this merger silliness any more. ;-)

  5. Yanno... on Secretive Company Scanning the Net · · Score: 1

I don't take offense to someone (quova or someone else) pinging my machines/network. It's a public network. How many of us, upon setting up a new machine on a network, type 'ping www.yahoo.com' to see if everything is cool?

Now...if you do anything besides a ping (and/or) traceroute, or you do it repeatedly, I'm going to get suspicious.

  6. It's nothing *new* on Who Controls The Linux Media ? · · Score: 3

Does Burger King issue a press release when they start selling a new variation on the cheeseburger? Probably. Does it make CNN Headline News? Probably not. Why is that? Is AOL/Time Warner conspiring against Burger King in favor of McDonalds? Is there some secret corporate alliance? (There may be. So what?)

My point is, a new feature on a website is like a new variation on the cheeseburger. Great, now you can get barbecue sauce instead of ketchup. That's not going to catch my attention. And the job of a news source is to catch your attention long enough that your eyes go past the advertising.

I would have rejected an article about a feature addition to a website, too. Just as I don't pay much attention when a fast food restaurant adds another kind of sauce.

  7. Re:A legal question on Censorship != Innovation · · Score: 2

According to the Judge in the DeCSS case, any device which can be used to circumvent copyprotection is illegal according to DMCA- even if circumventing copy protection is not it's primary use, right?

If that's the case, computers are illegal.

  8. Five days in jail without being charged? on A Post-Columbine Halloween Horror Story · · Score: 1

This kid spent several days *in jail*. Was he convicted of a crime? Was he even *charged* with a crime?

*That's* why this is a problem.

  9. But flat screens and mice can work, sorta... on 3D Window Manager · · Score: 1

I think it's certainly a start. A flat surface can be pretty damn immersive; when playing quake2, I don't see the (physical) room around me, I see what's in the virtual room I'm playing in. And although the mouse/keyboard combination isn't the greatest way to control movement, it does work.

VR goggles would be nice; but a large monitor works pretty nicely too.

  10. Re:The NT site is just broken. on PCWeek "Hack This Page" Cracked · · Score: 1

    don't *think* so...
