    While you may have a valid point, I think this article is referring to the people who ask for FREE support.

    Off-the-clock stuff, like the girl in your class who wouldn't give you the time of day before her Dell stopped working. Or the guy whose Pentium 4 takes three minutes to boot. I think that's what most geeks complain about.

    This reminds me of that scene in "Cheats" where the girls vowed to stop giving away notes to the boys for free, chanting "we are not whores!"

    What happens when I need to switch between PhotoshopOS and InternetExploderOS? Do I have to wait an extra 30 seconds for it to boot? Not to mention the fact that the clipboard would be useless.

    IIRC, the reason (multitasking) OSes were created was so that people could switch between applications quickly as easily. Another reason is that programmers are too lazy to program a whole new OS for each and every new program.

    If you're willing to mutilate your systems and a spare pc tower, you can always build this to save a lot more space than a game station will. I saw it on TechTV one day, and iirc, the guy stuffed a few consoles, including all of the current ones.

    Granted, I'd never do this because I love my gamecube too much and dont feel like toasting another motherboard... :|

    Kinda OT from the above, but does anyone else notice how a large number of Americans think it's ok to set sovereign countries on fire from the air, yet as soon as a soldier overseas gets so much as athlete's foot, we all freak? And for no apparent reason, save for the "will of the Almighty" (Dubya-2003).

    Give 'em something that interests them, get them addicted (they DO know how to do that), make them think they need it to live, then suddenly announce that you're going to discontinue support. In order to access your information again, you have to log in from Windows.

    The "patch" is XP-SP1 and it doesn't remove IE, WMP, JVM, or OEX. It simply hides the access to them.

    Oh, and don't even bother trying to delete the directories, as the System File "Protection" directory's been moved to another (undisclosed) location.

    Like I tell my friends, there's a relatively small learning curve, but in the end, you can't beat this program for FTP stuff.

    Shouldn't you take it one step at a time? Flooding them with reading material before they're even on the desktop might be a little bit intimidating. Hell, I was scared enough when I was (re)installing _WINDOWS_ for the first time, let alone a notorious for-geeks-only OS like linux.

    But I do agree that at least some links to documentation (regarding linux, GNU, what have you) should be put on their desktops to educate them on the glories of OSS. :)

    But I can still run Mozilla on Windows. Just because IE is there doesn't mean I can't run an alternative browser. I don't have to remove IE in order to run Netscape/Opera/MyFavoriteBrowser.


    Sure, you can leave a window in your house wide open at all times as long as you personally use the front door. But what happens when a burglar comes along and climbs in through the window (no pun intended. :O)?

    My main desire to remove IE is to close any potential security holes that may arise in the future.

    A significant number of *nix-related screenshot images are .png. I agree that most websites dont use .png as inline graphics, but there are a lot of people who do; it's just that the ratio of people who do to people who don't is too great.

    As a matter of fact, that guy with the GBA Web Server had a .png screenshot of his desktop with the test PPP connection.
