  1. just like them on Microsoft To Provide IE Patches for Windows XP Only · · Score: 3, Insightful

This sounds like microsoft. But you know they'll just say they are going to do give them out anyway until 2007 or something like they always do.

The summary says that it will boost browsers like Firefox, but I highly doubt it. I don't know that many people who aren't already on Windows xp, but the plain fact is, plenty of people browse websites that can ONLY be viewed properly in IE. I hate it. You hate it. But the fact is, people need to put more pressure on webmasters to create standards-compliant websites.(AHEM SLASHDOT) COUGH COUGH /. rendering left side.

  2. DMCA erosions on Report Says Patents Threaten Software Innovation · · Score: 5, Interesting

It really is sad for IP and science in general when we have to go to court for a while to find out if we can make a garage door opener remote. The DMCA is possibly the worst thing that has ever happened to science in general. It lets companies be anti-competitive legally under a shroud of "protecting their intellectual property".

We all(I already have) should be going to the EFF's DMCA Action Page.

  8. No standardized UI on KDE 3.3 UI, Evaluated By 7 Real Users · · Score: 3, Insightful

The major problem that I have with using GNU/Linux as a desktop is the lack of a standardized UI. In Windows or Mac, no matter what program I'm in, I know based on UI guidelines and traditions that I am going to be able to use alt+f4 to close a program or window+r to run something, or command+f to open sherlock.

It is also a strength, because of the different choices developers have, but as a user, it is annoying to not have a consistant UI.

If you just use a mouse, it's not a problem, but the keyboard shortcuts are a big deal to me.

A lot of good programs are GTK and a lot of good ones are QT. You almost have to CHOOSE if you want to have a consistant UI.

  14. vpc is slow on Next Version of Virtual PC for Mac to Suck Less · · Score: 4, Informative

Not only does it have a problem with video cards, but it is dog slow. I don't think that this is a problem with the mac in general, but rather a problem of emulating another architecture in software on the cpu that is not designed to run those instructions.

When I run xp pro on vpc on a mac( for some physicians who have it here and have to use it for hospital applications ), it takes FOREVER even to bring up internet explorer on a brand new powerbook g4.

I'm not sure why MS even ships xp with vpc. It seems like something that still works with most stuff, like Windows 98, would be better because it's real cpu requirements are MUCH lower.

I don't think the video card issues are the real problem. MS needs to just release a version of windows for the mac that can run as a .app if they want to have real compatibility, but then you'd still have to have a VM for the other x86 applications.
