  1. Opposite Way Around on Ageism in IT? · · Score: 1

I experienced the opposite thing: most jobs require a number of years of experience (5+, 10+) that makes it impossible for a young guy to apply for a job.

  4. Re:When did games dictate the need for faster hrdw on Carmack on Doom 3 Video Cards · · Score: 2, Interesting

I know 10 years ago I bought a faster pc so that I COULD play games. Games have allmost always been more 'intense' for the hardware than simple desktop applications.

WordPerfect etc still ran great on my 8086 but if you wanted to play for example doom, you needed a faster machine(a 486 in my case).

Now look at it from the other side: would their ever be so much money invested in the development of faster hardware if there where no games? You don't really need a fast CPU to type a letter or make some spreadsheets.

I think people will always be in some sort of evolution.

Maybe the next step of evolution is the fact that we alter ourselves to get to a level of higher fitness. (autopoeisis or what's it called?).

  7. There will always be war on The Drone War · · Score: 1

Isn't war something that always has been around in the history of mankind?

Only difference is the way the wars are fought: with clubs and knives or with planes, tanks and guns. The result is always the same: a lot of innocent people die.

Technology will gain further importance in the future of warfare: let's not forget that a lot of current technology exists because of the fact that people made war upon each other.

  8. Not every student is a morron on Perception of Linux Among IT Undergrads · · Score: 2, Informative

Hi! I'm a CS student at a college in Brussels(Belgium). Every student here knows about *nix and has experience with it: it's one of the prerequisites for a few courses.

If students aren't interested in computer science and all aspects concerning it, it is probably the fault of the college where they are studying. It's very important to get a lot of hands-on experience that can be translated to the "real world" and I must admit that at a lot of places, this is left out in the courses.
But saying that anybody who can code and is interested in computers can replace computer scientists is wrong: there are a lot of things that a decent education provides like formal languages, computability theory, algorithmical complexity, good design, clean coding, etc ...
